Battery Charging Oooops

Recommended Posts

Late week I put my boat battery on trickle charge for the usual 24 hours maintenance. Unfortunately, being the d*ckhead that I can be, I forgot about it for a week. :(

It doesn''t seem to have suffered any damage, and kicked the old outboard over when I put it back.

Can anyone tell me if there could be any permanent damage?

Thanks & Cheers

Ken

Cajun,

if your charger has trickle charge, then it sounds like it should be an automatic charger???

If it is it will switch off on its own so no damage is done...

If it isnt automatic I cant see it stuffing the battery this time, but continous overcharging will shorten the battery life is all.

So dont stress to much about it mate

Thanks Stevo.

It isn''t an automatic charger, it is a fairly cheap Arlec one, with a "High/Low" switch.

The instructions said "low" was a trickle charge. But it also seemed that the instructions were translated from Japanese, so I''m not sure I trust them to be completely accurate :nono:

I''ll crank it over next weekend and see how it goes.

I dont believe an Arlec charger will turn off until its switched off. Like Stevo said there shouldnt be any permanant damage, this will only happen if the battery boils dry below the electrolite plates. If your battery water level can be checked (screw caps in top) make sure the water is covering the plates if not top it up with distilled water. We have a make shift jumper battery in our workshop which is just about permanently on charge. Dont stress about it itl be ok. :D

Cheers
