Dusky_Chaser Posted February 29, 2012 Share Posted February 29, 2012 Good friends Troy (mialla), Jon and myself headed up to Narooma last weekend to fish in the 3rd Annual Narooma Flathead Challenge. A really well organised event and just a great weekend away. Its a team event and the best 5 fish for each day was measured and a total length taken. Wagonga inlet at Narooma is by far the toughest of all the estuaries that we fish when it come to catching any sort of reasonable numbers of flathead and I knew it wasnt really a matter of the best 5 fish....the real challenge was going to be just landing 5 fish. We arrived on Friday around 11am and hit the water just after 12pm to see if we could find a few fish......wow was it tough......we fished for about 4 hours and landed only 1 fish....we knew we were in for a challenge. Saturday morning 8am and it was on.....we managed a couple of quick fish early and were feeling a bit better. We only landed the 4 legals on day one although Jonny landed the biggest fish of the day for all competitors....she came in at 68.5. At the end of Day 1 only 3 teams had landed 5 fish......21 teams out of 60 didnt even land a fish including many locals so to say it was tough is an understatement ......our 4 fish saw us sitting in 4th place. In first place was the team that won the event last year so we knew we needed a good day on Sunday ....5 fish with a nice one in the bag. Sunday was pretty blowy in the main basin so we headed to some backwaters and landed fish number 1 early. A three hour period of nothing and we could feel it slipping away and then a surprise double hookup....57 and 69 and we were back in it. Did I say Wagonga was tough??? You really have to work hard there...We did end up with our 5 fish and a healthy bag at that of 48 55 56 57 and 69.....we knew we would go close but it wasnt quite enough and we came in 2nd The leading team also managed 5 fish including the biggest fish of the weekend....a beauty at 80cm.. Well done to The Boys from Junee TEAM READ COW.......some of their team have been fishing Wagonga for over 40years.....you cant beat experience. All in all the Narooma Flathead Challenge is all about having a bit of fun, a good laugh and a good yarn down at o'briens hotel... Hodgey Posted February 29, 2012 Share Posted February 29, 2012 Congrats on a fantastic effort fellas Wagonga is indeed a tough waterway and the figures you mentioned typify the results for this comp for the last three years. The camaraderie that exists at the end of each day more than makes up for the tough fishing though Mazz told me that jewy was Bruce's first on lure, so it was a special moment for him. Assuming that you don't keep the flatties in the live well, how do you record your fish size in the classic? Is it like the Barra comps where you photograph the fish on a comp provided brag Matt? Cheers Paul Hi Paul. A brag mat is provided to every angler. The fish must be photographed on that bragmat and also have a key in the photo. Hey mate You can fish anywhere in wagonga from the town wharf right down to the back. You must stay out of the marine parks. It is a lure only comp.
