One for the jew specialists

Hey raiders,

i have a question about jewfishing.

My rig with a live is a 5/0 circle hook with 50lb leader and as little weight as possible. I am stuck between fishing it in baitrunner mode (as its a circle hook), or fishing it in gear. To a further extent, if fishing a livie on baitrunner mode, how do i know when to strike? Is there a general way to do this or does it depend on location/fish size etc..?

Cheers, Tom

i like using the baitrunner feature when fishing strips baits etc as sometimes theyl nibble away at the bait before swallowing it and running off (strike when line starts to peel off and doesnt stop)

for live baits i like to have the reel set in fighting drag as the jew dont muck around with liveya as they have to catch them first so the bait usually gets swallowed whole.

thats how i do it anyway, interested to see what others say though.

You might try going to Manly Aquarium at feeding time to get a better idea of jewies eating habits. They have a whole load of big jewies swimming around in the aquarium, along with every other fisherman's species. Maybe call ahead to to ask what time to be there to witness the jewies actually eat what is chucked in... I was there and watched the midday feeding, when all the food was snatched up by the bream.

The bream's eating was also interesting: the bream acted much like seagulls, where they grab whatever food they can, and then immediately try to swim off to somewhere quiet, and only then do they attempt to eat what they've grabbed. When I fish, it doesn't feel like they're doing that, I usually feel bream biting at the bait and then they either get hooked or they don't when I strike. Maybe I could be waiting longer with them before striking.

It is a great place for a sydney fisho to visit.

hey mate,

i just love watching my rod and line to death when i got a live yakka on. i use a baitrunner to and i utilise the baitrunner function always, though my main drag is set not too much harder than the secondary drag. i watch the line go tense or quickly move first......(something is after you cmon take it take it lol), then the rod loads up and then the run.......then another run, i only engage main drag manually after im pretty sure its stopped its runs. having main drag not set too much tighter sort of ensures that if it decides to go again it can........i have been busted off in the past on 40lb by having it set too tight or me being too eager and flicking the baitrunner off. i adjust the main drag as i see fit during the remainder, but it usually stays the same.

hope this helps

When I fish for Jew and the rod loads up and or takes drag I just get stuck into it but not too hard until I get a feel for size of fish. Forget this when to strike thinking and just get into it.

If you have a live and ur leaving ur line on bait runner mode then I wouldn't be using circle hooks. Also I think your hooks are a bit too small for jewwies unless there schoolies I wouldnt use anything under a 7/0 for livies or whole squid

With circle hooks I would either leave it in gear and let them hook themselves without striking or, use the baitrunner mode but leave the drag on full soft. Soon as the fish moves off with the bait click it into gear and slowly tighten the drag and load up the fish.

On another note, has anyone had good success using circle hooks on jews or do you find they drop or steal the bait and not hook up?

Thanks guys, great help! I have some 7/0's if thats better and i have one more question. When using a live yakka/mullet/tailor, how should i present it? Hook through nose, just infront of pectoral fin or towards the back end of the bait?

cheers, tom

depends what your doing and where,

eg trolling or downrigging or anchored in strong current pin through the nose so the bait stays sraight and doesnt drown,

anchored with little current pin behind the head in top of shoulder,

from rocks pin through tail end this way the bait (should) swim away from you and the rocks,

hope this helps you get that hookup

thanks mate, that helps a lot. I will be doing a lot of fishing in the deeper waters of cowan creek. Cowan Creek has little current flow so behind the head as you mentioned may be the go!

Just a thought, look at what the professional fishers do, usually with a springer to set the hook once the springer is fully loaded - about 30 cm of line. They do it for a living, so I would learn from them. Leave the reel at strike drag and once the rod has loaded, your in. I have so many times spent anxious moments as the fish picks and then runs.......when do you strike and inevitably leave it too long. Keep it simple I say.

Thanks mate,

that helps a lot. I have had an encounter with a jew before in pittwater. I was fishing a live yakka on the bottom in baitrunner mode, all of a sudden the reel started screaching as line peeled off. I waited about 6-7 seconds as just as i was about to strike the run stopped... Nothing at all... Pulled the yakka in and it was dead and had the typical bite marks of a jewies teeth... Can't stand to lose another one like that again...

I wouldn't use circles personally and I wouldnt use the baitrunner mode. Your best odds of a hook up lie with J hooks and a reel set at fighting drag in a solid rod holder. I just don't think there is enough hook point exposed on a circle. Letting a Jew run with light drag before striking just gives it too much opportunity to reject the bait. Jews normally hit lives with force in an ambush attack

Missed hookups are a part of the game. If you do get a solid hit but no hookup, try your best to leave the bait down for another five minutes. Jew will sometimes smash a livie and kill it then come back a few minutes later to swallow it. It could also be another fish in a school taking advantage of a stunned, semi-dead fish but I get the feeling it is the original assassin returning to finish the job.

That's what I think aswell. My problem is I miss hook ups sometimes because the rod is in the holder and I didnt get to the rod quick enough to strike. The only solution I know of is to hold the rod for hours on end and strike immediately.

Anyone know of a better method other than holding the rod in your hands for hours? I want some kind of automated striking rod holder? Soon as it ges a slight pull down a spring mechanisim shoots it up and strikes. Does anything like that exist?

You can get those cradle rod holders that you lay the rod in, much easier to pick the rod up than in a vertical rod holder. I'd imagine that would be as close as you can get to what you're after.

That, or hire someone to hold your rod while you sip champagne in the cabin :074:

What you witnessed at the aquarium was bream in a feeding frenzy which would differ from one cruising along and running into your nipper on 6lb leader.
