Is Sydney becoming the best NSW offshore fishing hotspot?

Im interested to hear what people think but I personally think that Sydney is becoming the best all round offshore fishing destination in NSW!

Our winter/spring this year has definitely turned the fishing scene alight with the bluefin turning up again & if it wasnt for the 3 weeks of bad weather between the our first & last bluefin being caught we may have had a month of great bluefin fishing.

Then the yellowfin finally turned back up & in good numbers. Its a fantasic sight to see yellowfin busting up on baitfish & the strange thing that I noticed compared to previous seasons was the size variation in the same schools. You had the chance to catch a jellybean of 6kg or the biggest we have heard of going 86kg! Throw in the good size albies that have been around & it adds up to a pretty good tuna season for Sydney. The last 3 weeks have also seen quite a few marlin caught & plenty hooked & lost while people are targeting tuna. We even had guys catching dolphinfish in good numbers last week while cubing for tuna!

Then you add in our other species that have been targeted such as blue eye & gemfish on the seamounts & the trusty old mako, blue sharks & we have also seen a few out of season tiger sharks being caught.

With the increased interest in broadbill fishing we have also seen a few caught off Sydney over the past couple of weeks & finally the long sort after SGFC broadbill trophy was claimed. There have also been the odd thresher shark spotted & heard of one caught last week by a boat.

Then we get to the closer inshore fishing... the kings have turned up in good numbers already both in close & offshore reefs & their numbers should increase as we head into summer, we should also start to see the dolphin fish turn up at the fads as the warmer currents push in. The snapper have been pretty good all year & the flathead are moving into spawn giving plenty of anglers the chance to catch a great feed. There are plenty of salmon about for the spin guys & fly fishos & they are great fun on light gear!.

We had a great season last year with the run of little black marlin, the striped marlin were sporadic but we had a good late season run of blue marlin & hopefully with good numbers of striped marlin already showing up we could be in for a bumper season!

Cheers

I certainly think Sydney offers great game fishing opportunities for a lot of species. Wahoo in summer, blue fin in winter and all species that fit in between those two species preferred water temps. The other thing about Sydney is the amount of fishing effort that goes in. The water is getting a good look at every weekend, so as soon something shows up in the currents, there is enough effort going in to find them. Nothing gets missed. Lets hope the beakies show up in numbers this year, we really struggled last season.

So in short, game fishing off Sydney, opportunities are always there, awesome!

Well we all knew what area Scratchie would pick! :biggrinthumb:

As you know we spend a bit of time up there & yes it is a great spot & can't wait to get back up there for the marlin season!

With the warn water pushing through we may have seen the last of the tuna but with it comes the early season marlin. Plenty been seen & hooked over the past 3 weeks & we had a good session down here last year before we went to Port.

Cheers
