Tintanic
Hi Raiders, First post in a long time so here we go….. Had an opportunity to join some friends on Saturday for a morning of chasing some of the elusive big reds. 6am start and we were onboard the “TopDog” and heading to Port Stephens in hope of finding the big girls. 40mins later we had reached our destination. Wind was low and chop was minimal, what a day it was looking to be! ……….And boy was I right! Lines out, and everyone working hard it wasn’t long till my rod buckled over. Line peeling, wild headshakes, and rod tip in the water. This is what I had been waiting for in all my years of fishing! About 10 minutes later, up comes a massive +70cm red. Massive high fives all round. Within 10 minutes my mate was on and the reel was screaming again. Another massive red. This lasted about 2hrs with us boating 7 reds, getting dusted twice and dropping a couple due to bent jigs or busted leader (they were swallowing the plastics right down and their teeth were causing us issues). The wind really started to come up by lunch time and made the fishing the area hard work as currents were running strong and plastics were hard to keep in the right level of the water column. With a top catch on board we decided to call it a day In all it was a fantastic day out on the water and not only did I set my new PB Snapper, but I was heading home with a fantastic feed of fish! Massive thank you to Matthew “TopDog” and Tommy “Asian Tom” for teaching me your secrets. You guys are the best in the business! Tight lines guys! Tintanic
Top catch. Well done! Thanks buddy. No better feeling than breaking a PB and sharing the moment with good mates. Hopefully Red October holds out for a couple more weeks

Tintanic
setup was 20lb braid to 10lb fluro and an assortment of plastics on 1 once jigs. Mainly shads and fish style in about 6 inch size
Dave_
Absolute crackers mate. I'd also love to know what setup you used. I've got a new G-Loomis IMX 7' 8-15lb and a new Daiwa Caldia 3000 with 300m of 15lb on it. I thought this setup would be ok but a little light on for snapper on plastics maybe? I'm going fishing off Forster this weekend so I might take with me anyway.
Flickn Mad
Dave, that set up would be great for reds on plastics depending on jig weight. If your worried about grunt tie on a snap swivel and connect it up to say your cloths line. keep upping the drag until the line breaks. you will be amazed at how much hurt you can deal out with a rig like that. It is all about rod angles. (nothing past 90 degrees)
paulk001
Wow nice catch. The big reds make the Nannygai look like a goldfish! I was out Saturday as well, didn't get anything but a large Sargent Baker before the winds hit.

Probably could have landed them on 10lb braid with 10 - 10lb fluro provided you work the drag right and keep that rod tip high. I was using a mates g-loomis 7ft and i beleive it was around 6-10lb stick with a daiwa sol 3000 reel that seem to do the trick just fine. It was a tussle at first to make sure you get them off the bottom and near any nasty reefs but after that all the fun is in setting the drag just right and slowly letting the buggers tire themselves out
Dave_
Ok, sounds like my setup will be fine for Snapper on plastics, I just haven't fished this way before so I was unsure. Really appreciate the help fellas, cheers. Edited October 24, 2013 by Dave_
