i got some mullet from a friend

hi can some one tell me about these mullet they were very big fish when I was cleaning them on both the in side of the gut was heaps of white fat when I pulled it out and through it in the water it floated , the fish was a beautiful eating.is this always in mullet I have never seen that much before regards spearby

it look like fat it was white there was no eggs .unless it was the early start be for the eggs had formed

It most likely was fat, especially cause it floated. Fish in colder water will hold fat stores for insulation. I went to the Murry River in February and saw it for the first time. Ive noticed it since in the ocassional salt water fish, but mostly in bream and salmon.

It's maybe milt or fish sperm. Was it in long sack extending most of the gut cavity?

Generally means he was very close to spawning

The main difference between the two would be colour. Fat would be dead white, sperm sacs are sort of cream coloured... hards to tell if you havent seen them both. Thats my thoughts. Plus I would think that sperm sacs would sink because they are mostly water and protein.

hi it was white and like fat. I have had mullet very big and thin from the same mate and calls them rails I think that is how spell it , that is just after the spawning so what you say morwong might be on the right track

Nothing like a nice spermy mullet to build up an appetite
