Murray Cod fishing in The New England Rivers

I finally got asked by the boys to go cod fishing with them and I jumped at the chance after not having a job I had a little free time up my sleeve.

The trip was to be in the New England rivers and it was just to good to miss out on.I organised to meet Grant and Tony at Grants joint at Murwillumbah after flying to the gold coast and outdoordan was driving up from Sydney.

The flight up was easy after all the flights overseas lately and we hastily did our shopping and headed off on our journey of enlightenment...Grant had his trusty v8 Toyota and tony had his wife sharons Suzuki grand beach baby and dan was in his Nissan navara and 4wd was definitely needed where we were going.

The drive took around 4 hrs from jewhunters joint and then it was time to go exploring into the bush and find some water to catch my first murray cod in.

It took a while on the first arvo to connect but it was well worth it with an almighty jolt on my spinnerbait and a nice 65cm GREEN FISH hitting the boga grips with me smiling like a Cheshire cat.I would like to thank the boys right from the outset as without any of them I would never have realised my dream of catching one of the mightiest fish from the freshwater of our great country.I quickly got a few pictures and sent my new found friend on its way and didn't it feel great doing it with a great fisho like Jewhunter who has shown me plenty over the years.

The place we ended up staying at was awesome with great views of the river and beautiful natural scenery and with the guys it turned out to be a great trip all round and one which I personally will never forget for so many reasons and some I dare not mention on our forums but the others know exactly what I am talking about..suffice to say well done Slinky.

The fishing was hard as the river level was extremely low due to irrigation but when the cod fired up they went right off their heads with Grant and I scoring 4 double hook-ups in a row in one particular river section and landed 19 fish between us.

This type of fishing is not for the weak or feint hearted and took its toll on all of us walking around the granite gorges all day and night.

Grant scored the best fish of the trip with a whopping 85cm cod taken on a jitterbug right in front of my eyes, well done mate.

We scored 54 cod and missed plenty.

Thanks so much fellas for an awesome fishing trip and I hope before I get to old I might experience this once in a lifetime trip again.

The memories will last a lifetime and I will recall this trip many times to anyone who wants to listen.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Stewy... you deserve the great result. I've rarely seen anyone put in the casts that you did over a weekend. I think you went beyond dedication and into the realms of insane bloody-mindedness but that's why you landed half of all the fish caught for the weekend.

As for it taking a toll, I think the combination of lots of heat and sun, waaaay too much sugar, and the diffuculty breathing from the twiggy-stick laden air in the cabin, all contributed. I had a great weekend and it was fantastic to finally get some fishing done with you.

I can confirm that the river is definitely west of the Great Divide. We'll try to find it again soon.

All the best to you and Donna for the new year and congrats on some great fishing.

Cheers, Tony

I don't think I've ever seen Stewy smile so much! :D

Yes, it was a fantastic trip. The big Slinky spent way too much time in the sun. :insane:

A crazy pre Xmas work schedule saw Dan off his game for the first time & I have never seen that before. :1wallbash:

Stewy's excitement didn't diminish from the time we left until the time we returned. It even rubbed off

on a lazy old bugger like me.

Thanks for another top trip fellas. It was tough fishing & I have never seen the water so low before.

The last morning session of 19 cod in a couple of hours with Stewy is one I won't forget. We once

again had a barrel of laughs & it was a fitting way to end the trip. I'm glad he got to see how good it can fish.

I ended up with 17 fish & the biggest for the trip. That fish would have been dwarfed by the fish that absolutley

exploded on Stewy's surface lure but missed the hooks. I have never seen a bigger surface strike, & I've seen a few.

I thought Slinky had done a bomb in the water, or that Stewy had fallen in.

Welcome to the Cod club Stew. I had a ball once again & I'm looking forward to our next adventure.

Cheers,

Grant.
