Light rock fishing rod

Hey Raiders,

I'm looking for a new rod to cast metals and poppers off the rocks for tailor, salmon, bonito and rat kings. My requirements:

•2 or 3 piece (3 piece preferred

•8'6" - 9'6" long

•balance a 4000 or 5000 stradic fj

•somewhere in 5-10 kg line range

This'd be perfect except for the $350 price tag:

Is there anything similar?

Cheers and thanks in advance.

Nick

I've got a 9' Starlo Stick Shorespin which balances to a 5000FJ Stradic pretty well and you can probably get one for about $100 if you sniff around. The rod is fine, I've used mine extensively over the last two years from the rocks, caught small jew, drummer, bream, salmon, bonnies on it but I'm not really in love with the thing.

If you're happy to chuck pencil poppers and just skip them over the surface I'd actually go a 10' rod instead. Gives you some extra distance when hurling metal and it's easier to lift small pelagics with.

If you want to throw big cup-faced poppers you'll need a second much heavier set-up, preferably even shorter than specified.

Other options to look at are the Samaki Rods (Allure Surf/Zing). I've got a 10 footer which works well for the above species/applications and wasn't particularly expensive. Or some of the NS Seabass rods aren't super expensive and come in 9' models. Never fished one but they felt pretty good in the shop.

Maybe figure out the 5 lures you think you'll use most and buy the rod based on their weight etc.

Hope that doesn't confuse too much.

I think all the rods mention will do a good job. It all comes down to your personal preference and budget. I'm using a 9 ft 6 NS black hole cabin II . So light. Throws lures from 30-100grams. Can cast all day but it will cost you $330 from memory. I have used the t-curves which are good before buying this rod.

My second outfit is a nitro surf assassin 12 ft . matched to a saragosa sw 5000. Top rod and reel if you need some clearance on high ledges or ledges with cunji around.

Starlo Stix 902 shorespin 2 piece is the go. I picked mine up for $90 when they first came out, have had it for over 5+ years and has seen alot of use and abuse, caught plenty of small kings on it, bonito, salmon, tailor, mack tuna, drummer, bream etc

I purchased a T curve offshore revolution 9ft, similar stick but about $150 more than the starlo stick, i actually prefer the starlo.
