hamerz84
G'day guys can anyone give me some advice on what's the best way to store freshly caught squid for future trips if I'm not going to use them straight away? Thanks.
mike2153
Best way mate is to vac seal them. What I sometime do is take some zip lock bags on the boat catch the squid kill them straight away chuck em in the bag then slowly lower the bag in the water what this will do is push all the air out. mitchie18092
Yeah vac sealing is probably the best. Try and retain as much of the ink as possible - and a bit of sea water in the bag your freezing it in i find stops any freezer burn and makes for a nice little addition once its defrosted. mii11x
As soon as I get home I glad rap or zip bag them individually, then freeze them. Once I take them out of the freezer, that's it though, they get used ie. I dont keep frrezing and unfreezing them. I have caught jews on 2 month old squid fyi, but like I said, they stay in the freezer until they are used. One more thing I write dates on the bags so I use the older ones first. spaners
So whats the difference then from fresh caught and frozen at home, to frozen in a freezer at the local tackle shop....its still frozen. I'm not trying to be smart just trying to understand the fresh is best theory. And where does frozen Californian Squid fit into the equation. Regards. beats workin
Vac sealing is definatly the best just dont let them come into contact with fresh water at all that includes ice

NaClH2OK9
I went to a seafood bbq cookery class at Sydney fish markets last year. They told my fresh water wouldn't spoil squid?
mii11x
Have you seen the colour of frozen squid at most bait shops? I have never caught Jews on packet squid. Yeah sure if your friendly with your local tackle shop you can get some nice squid, but they sometimes thaw and re freeze. As for Cali squid, I am not really sure

Davemmm
Salt water in the bags is the best tip. I've had vac pac side by side with squid in tupperware filled with seawater and whilst its a close call the tupperware came out better.
