Ban on witches hats

G'day raiders,

Tonight at our weekly fishing club meeting at the shoal bay hotel, the boys were saying that witches hats for crabbing are to be outlawed by the 1st of May. I haven't heard anything about it. Can anyone else confirm this????

Cheers scratchie!!!

Banned over here in W.A.

(have not had a line out for 2 or more weeks, over a week of rain and travelling inland for some time - did see some salmon caught yesterday, around the 70cm mark, but the fish had swum off before I walked to the beach)

What's the reason for the ban ???

Also Banned in Vic. They claim non-target species (including turtles) get tangled in them and drown, A valid point I guess, anything and everything gets tangled in those damn things, but crabs do too so I like them :)

Hey Scratchie,

Found an article from late last year which might clear somethings up-

http://www.portstephensexaminer.com.au/story/2780873/call-to-ban-witches-hat-crab-traps-in-port-stephens-to-save-turtles/

Cheers,

FishingGuy

Thanks for that mate. It maybe only for the port Stephens area. Great, we need a few more sanctuary zones while their at it. :(

I thought that in the states that had them banned, the reason was that the nets catch undersized crabs and then they died whilst trying to be released whereas pot type traps allowed you to remove all crabs easily and release what had to be released.

Cannot tell you why just yet, have seen the signs around the boat ramps only allowing specialised traps, or by netting (scooping up while wading) with a steel net.

I have used the witches hats, but have found lately that I could not buy any nets in the Sutherland Shire tackle shops that I have attended.

I thought that they had decreased the number of witches hats but had increased the number of traps ? I do remember that Swordie posted an article, not that long ago, in relation the correct numbers one is allowed to have. Perhaps he may be able to shed some light upon this subject. I do know that there are certain ares where crab nets are not allowed but I feel that this is not the crux of the questions being asked.

Thats right they changed it from I believe 1 trap and 5 witches hats to 2 traps and 4 witches hats
