Heff Posted May 20, 2015 Share Posted May 20, 2015 While on a recent fishing trip to Laurieton NSW I caught and released about 6 long thin fish (ave 60cms long) with very sharp teeth in a long snout. I think I have identified them as "Barred Longtoms". Has anyone had experience catching these and are they edible? I caught them on nippers. brad_tate Posted May 21, 2015 Share Posted May 21, 2015 I've caught Longtoms in Scarborough, Brisbane any number of times as a kid and my son caught one in the Georges river last year, picture below. Yowie Posted May 21, 2015 Share Posted May 21, 2015 Have eaten them a couple of times,. around the 45 to 50 cm mark. Cut off the fillets, removed the bones, then pan fried them. Similar to garfish fillets - prefer the garfish though. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Heff Posted May 25, 2015 Author Share Posted May 25, 2015 I also was told that a good recipe is to three quarter fill a pot with water and add soup veggies (carrots, celery, onion etc) and a house brick. Bring to the boil and add the longtoms, and simmer for three hours. Take out the longtoms and throw away, and enjoy the veggies and house brick!!
