Keen young anglers and would-be anglers in the Narrandera area can brush up on their fishing skills or learn how to fish at a special NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) fishing workshop being run on Friday 7 October.

The workshop is being held at NSW DPI Narrandera Fisheries Centre, Buckingbong Road, off the Sturt Highway, from 10 am to 3 pm.

The fishing workshop, funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust and run by DPI fisheries staff, will give young people aged between eight and 14 years the chance to practise casting, rigging, tying knots and fishing.

NSW DPI Manager of the Narrandera Fisheries Centre, Les Rava, said youngsters would also learn about bag and size limits, aquatic habitats, threatened species and ethical fishing practices.

He said fishing workshops were being held around the State as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to teaching children about recreational fishing and conservation.

The NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts provide funding for the workshop program, which dedicates more than $50 000 a year to ensure community engagement workshops continue across the State.

Mr Rava said the Narrandera Fisheries Centre which includes a hatchery and grow-out ponds, the John Lake Centre for visitor education and aquariums, and a centre of excellence for research was the ideal place for community groups to learn more about fishing.

“The youngsters will get the chance to put their new skills into action by fishing for perch.

“They will also be able to fish in a pond specially stocked to improve their chances of a good catch,” he said.

The cost is $40 a child, which includes a rod and reel and a BBQ lunch.

Numbers are limited to a maximum of 30 and bookings are essential. To secure a place please telephone (02) 6959 9021 by October 4.
