quintrex52
After reading and researching about longtail tuna in Port Stephens I decided to give them a crack and see if i could catch my very first longtail. After sourcing some slimies at the heads headed to where i thought they might show up. Needless to say locating them was very easy with information out on the internet but seeing them bust up all around you for hours and not get a hook up was very frustrating, due to the fact they were chasing very small bait fish. But persistence paid off as the rod buckled over and after a couple of nice 30m runs and about 10mins of back/arm breaking circling under the boat I finally manged to get it onto the deck. Its measured 107cm to the fork. High fives every where After burning my arms out decided to do some more laid back fishing and chase some Jewfish on the tide change. Dropped the livies down and 20mins in the rod bend over and after 10mins on 20lbs trace pulled up this jewie just shy of a meter. Couldn't believe my luck. Fishing its a funny thing....many days for doughnuts but its day like these that make it well worth it

Berleyguts
Great effort, Dangler! A good longtail and a jew! Did you try spinning small metal slugs to match those baitfish? That spot goes off this time of year. Well done Cheers scratchie!!! And wouldn't you know it, Jeff... I'm coming up the weekend after next but, alas, not bringing the boat... might sneak in a two-piece rod and have a flick off the breakwall or Shoal Bay jetty... if I can convince the to take the mother-in-law (yes, she will be in tow!) to the club or something! Even if I don't fish up there, it's still nice being in God's country. Baz Edited April 30, 2016 by Berleyguts

quintrex52
Were you downrigging the livies? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk No we didnt downrig just motored ahead of the surface action and drifted in the path.. Very important i thought to turn the engine off as they spook very easily with the other 10 boats trying to get a metals into them One under a ballon, the other free swimming with no weight

But during mid April and early May longtail and mac tuna are everywhere inside the bay. You can be drifting for flatties and suddenly they are busting up around you. The key is to be in the right place at the right time!

Scratchie
sounds too good to be true, it would be like game fishing in a lake they'd be unreal on light gear It's true! Last Tbft, the record cobia was caught in the same place as the record jew. I've heard of YFT being caught in the bay. 3-4 weeks ago a black marlin was caught off Tomaree heads. I personally think it's due to the amount of bait that is in the bay. Also the fact that the bay is 2 & 1/2 times the size of Sydney harbour! You gotta love Port Stephens. You gotta love Port Stephens. that's unreal, it makes sense you just need to be where all the bait fish are and the bigger fish won't be far behind. With a big body of water like that the tide change must be like rapids around the heads and that would be dragging all the small fish out. The pelagics are probably lining up at the heads on every outgoing tide change for a easy feed. I probably won't have time this year, but I'm gonna try get up there next year around april/may and try for a longtail
