Stockton beach

Hi raiders I'm going to stockton beach this weekend. Has anyone any tips for fishing the beach.  What's to be caught, what methods to fish this time of year.  Gear, bait and rigs to use??, any advice at all would be well apriciated. Ideally I would like a Jewish but will settle for anything at all.  Thanks in advance for any help.

The mullet have started to run! So find a nice gutter, a slab of mullet and your in with a chance. There should be some salmon and tailor about too! If not, beachworms are another good option!

Thanks I don't have gear heavy enough to bully a shark,  any other advice as to what tackle I might need.  Do I need to fish far out or in close in gutters.  And would appreciate if someone could give/pm me a general area of the beach to fish to increase chances.  Is live bait an option or a waste of time

Trip organiser/ute driver pulled out that morning ?? to fond of the beer??

got to Stockton eventually recently found what we taught was a gutter but current was very strong and our rigs were dragged close to shore in no time(not washed in but dragged quickly to the right). Couple of runs but only one soapy, maybe 55cm. Nice flatty was got next morning alright but that was all. My question is we're we in wrong spot since current was to strong 4oz running star sinker just knotted us up most times, couldn't hold bottom. Was it a case of just finding a gutter with less current or could it have been fished differently to suit??

You could try fishing a big ball sinker instead of a star sinker and run along the beach with it until is swings onto the sand but sometimes is is just too difficult to fish even if you are casting house bricks.

I'm guessing it was a big swell, which often is accompanied by either a strong current swinging either North or South -- in your case, South.  I check Willy Weather and don't fish in swells approaching 3M because of currents -- and besides I don't have any luck -- but some of my mates do.  Largest sinker I use in strong currents (usually in swells 2m upward)  is a number 3 Star.  Other than that on 15lb mono line I just use the lightest sinker that can hold.  I really only carry and fish with 2 types of sinkers.   You actually don't even need the light sinkers at all unless you are specialising in bream and whiting.  You'll even get bream with the big sinker, but whiting are a bit more touchy -- even some bream.

I'm guessing you were night fishing for jews.  They like a deep hole with some sand-bar structure around as they are an ambush fish, and look for some white water.

Gutters at Stockton run all along the beach, so unless you are on a bar that comes almost up to the shore you'll be in some kind of gutter.  Just pick where the waves are breaking about 30 or so metres out with a gutter between the bar and the shore -- and with white water rolling over the gutter, and you'll be laughing.
