Yowie Posted May 17, 2017 Share Posted May 17, 2017 Prefer them salted, though lately the salted ones are a little small and over salted, meaning less weight for throwing some distance. For casting and retrieving without a sinker, you need a bit of weight to cast a bit of distance. The small reddies do not discriminate, they will eat any type of pillie. Volitan Posted May 19, 2017 Author Share Posted May 19, 2017 Ok, so after reading all the responses, I bought a bag of frozen pillies, and tried some salting. 24 hours salting is ok for short distance casting - maybe 48 hours for the longer distance stuff. The fish seemed happy with what I offered them. previously I'd been using bait elastic, but I think I prefer salting. An elderly Chinese fellow at Avoca gave me a good demo of how to rig the salteds for maximum persistence on the hook. cheers, and thanks for the responses.
