jay_stylz
Hey guys got the boat out today for the first time in a while noticed the volts gauge not working both batteries fully charged and are holding charge no issues with them but just wondering if this means that the motor isn't charging the batteries. ? Anyone had this issue before ? Motor seems to be running perfect . Motor is a 2008 90 hp etec any help would be greatly appreciated
jeffb5.8
Put a multi meter on the batteries when you have it running that will tell u if it's charging. otherwise it may just be a gauge issue.
jay_stylz
Ill give it a shot today and see how it goes
randell34
As jeffb5.8 suggested, use a multimeter to measure the voltage across the batteries. Check before starting the engine, it might be around 12.5 volts depending on the charge of your batteries. Check again after starting the engine, it would jump to over 13.5 volts once your alternator is charging the batteries. If the voltage increases when engine is running then there's a problem with your voltmeter, if the voltage doesn't increase then there's a problem with your charging system (alternator). jay_stylz
I have noticed previously that the volts jumped up wen the motor was running but didn't think anything of it just yesterday it seemed to be doing nothing
raging
Nothing as in 0 voltage or as in didn't move ?
jay_stylz
Sorry should have stated it's an analog gauge not digital both batteries were fully charged prior to going out and were showing full charge and yes gauge didn't move at all Edited July 16, 2017 by jay_stylz
raging
Do what Jeff said, otherwise you'll just be guessing

jay_stylz
Yeah I'll have to give it a shot tomorrow sometime and see how it goes
Trailcraft43
Go a digital numbers readout gauge
jay_stylz
Just did a test with the multimeter both batteries are at 12.67 volts then when started jumps up to 13.6 then wen put in gear rpm climbs and jump up to 14 and the gauge not moving at all looks like a faulty gauge to me thoughts ? Sigma
My next step would be to take out the gauge and connect it directly to a good battery. If the gauge still doesn't work, then you have a faulty gauge.
jeffb5.8
That's good the Alternator is working and the batteries are holding charge. now check all wiring connections, inline fuses, remove and clean / replace any connectors. After that run a power wire to the gauge and if nothing then it's time to replace the gauge.
jay_stylz
Cheers guys thanks for the help much appreciated big piece of mind know the motor is all good

I'd try to find the manual for the gauge. It may not be reading raw volts of the wire at the gauge, but read at the ECU & signalled to the gauge. raging
On a side note, most fish finders I've used have the ability to display battery voltage. Might give you peace of mind until your gauge is sorted
