All hands on deck for women worldwide

Three in 10 staff at the NSW boating regulator are women and the focus today is on their empowerment in what is a traditionally male industry.

NSW Maritime A/ Executive Director Maritime Mark Hutchings said the theme for World Maritime Day, celebrated worldwide on 26 September, is ‘empowering women in maritime’.

“This year’s World Maritime Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the important contribution of women working in maritime. Here at NSW Maritime, we have women working in our executive team right through to on-water operational roles,” Mr Hutchings said.

“We’ve come a long way from the early years of the 1900s when women were prevented from working in any profession they wished and there’s still plenty to do to encourage more women to work in our industry.

“As a country that is dependent on the sea for transport and shipping, this celebration will highlight that NSW Maritime is part of a global effort to ensure safe and clean waterways.

“We will celebrate women in the ever changing face of the maritime industry with fellow agencies and organisations.

“NSW Maritime staff have invited representatives from NSW Police Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue NSW, Port Authority NSW, Boating Industry Association, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Surf Lifesaving NSW, Royal Surf lifesaving NSW, Tribal Warrior and the Cruising Yacht Club to mark this occasion.”

Australia is one of 167 countries that agree to safety and pollution regulations, set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London. IMO is the United Nations agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of pollution by ships.

NSW Maritime’s role in safety and environmental protection brings the world standards of IMO into NSW waters - standards which NSW Maritime’s Boating Safety Officers uphold when out on their patrols each day.
