paddy93 Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 G’day guys. Looking for a compact fly set up... Something I can put easily in a back pack for a hike in option, or on the motorbike. I like to travel to the lesser popular locations on the bike and I am interested in potentially running a small fly rig with my hunting set up to vary my days in the bush. Targeting trout in the streams mainly. Im not a fly fisho yet so if a budget option is available I am happy with that! Cheers!

Many rods come as a 4 piece and even my 9 foot long rod packs down into an easy carry small tube with a sling. For the small streams I expect a 5 weight is a good option. I'd suggest approaching this slightly differently and looking at a saltwater (stainless guides and runners) which means you can use it for both salt and freshwater. If you go 7 weight it can be used for larger trout, carp, bass and then several of the saltwater species. Regards, Derek

kingie chaser Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 You can get telescopic fly rods which can save you time because you can just leave it rigged while moving locations then pull it out & start fishing again. Here's an example https://reyrgear.com/products/first-cast-travel-fly-rod
DerekD Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 Turns out you can also find some six piece options as per this review.
savit Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 8 piece here : https://flyfisherpro.com/gear/rods/best-travel-fly-rod/#Echo_Trip_8_Piece_Travel_Fly_Rod

kingie chaser Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 (edited) Sorry, I dont get why you would have an 8 or 10pc rod when you can just get a decent telescopic?? Way less hassle imo & you cant lose 1 of 8 or 10 pieces 😉 🤐 Edited July 29, 2020 by kingie chaser

Tele rod action and rod rating aside, the only environment I would avoid for tele rods - is probably beaches due to sand regularly getting stuck inside. Personally, in this case, considering that Paddy93 already using/carrying a hunting setup, I would just measure it and go from its dimensions rather than chasing something superportable with questionable quality. Assuming it is a hunting rifle - over 3 feet - then even 3 piece fly rod should suffice without sticking out.

Now if I can find a 11 or 12 piece fly rod I might have a chance. The original poster hasn't logged on for about a month so they might not even see this. Edited July 29, 2020 by DerekD
Will Wright Posted August 16, 2020 Posted August 16, 2020 Gday paddy, it would be good to know a price point as you can get compact fly rods from a couple hundred up to a few thousand dollars - obviously you pay for quality
