Mike Nolan
Hi Friends, Need some advice on Sounders. I own a boat with a mate, and we’re currently using a Lowrance Hook 5x. It’s a cheaper unit but does an ok job. Recently my co-captain was given a sounder from a friend as he bought a new one. Its a Lowrance HDS 7 (gen 1 I believe). In theory it’s a better sounder, however the transducer is smaller. It’s also an older model. I’m skeptical that we’ll get a better reading from the HDS 7. If that’s the case I’d rather give it back so he can sell it and get some money for it. What are peoples thoughts? Will the transducer size make much of a difference? Mike Nolan
Here are the transducers for scale. Hook 5x on the left. HDS 7 on the right.
zmk1962
Mate it’s not all about size. What are the specifications for each kHz? Are they dual frequency? cheers Zoran
PaddyT
A Gen 2 HDI is what i ran from 2012 until last year-its a very good unit-but i have a suggestion-use that as a GPS and keep your Hook as your sounder until you are ready to upgrade later-2 screens are better than one
