  1. Hey guys just bought my new penn 9500 reel! Really excited to use the thing as my other one stuffed up on me just asking I'm going around the cliffs at watsons bay and wanted to know what line to use on this reel? I was thinking 60 pound mono with 90pound leader any other suggestions?

    60 overkill! especially mono!

    What are you targeting mate?

  2. Does anybody know if a 3000 Stella fe spool fits on Stella 2500 fe cheers

A 2500 sized Shimano and a 3000 sized shimano are the same sized real, only differance is that 3000 spool is deeper and therefore holds more line. Im not 100% sure, but i say they would fit on each other just fine :)

  3. A mate and myself fished off the rocks at south head today and managed only 2 fish. Neither of us had seen these species before so I was hoping someone could help out. Cheers

A wrasse of some species :)

  4. Ive found a spot that a few people have said they see Jewies get landed regulary, so its only a matter of time now.

Then that got me thinking, what to do with your baits after you've caught them? This spot is almost impossible to catch live bait from, so im forced to use dead bait. I caught some yakkas and a tailor yesterday, during the day, but didnt know what to do with it? So i simply left in the bucket with some water (mind you it was dead), then before i left for home,, emptied out the water, and left them in the bucket for acouple of hours, then butterflied them and threw them out?

So after catching your bait that your planning to use, that night, the day after, what do you do with it? Especially squid?!

    Cheers guys, Zac

  5. Hi mate,

I'm new to the site and I see some of your signatures with record tags below them. Is there a part of the site where we can see these records ?

Are they records among the fishraiderz or national biggest or IGFA records ?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Your picture of the coming storm is amazing btw.

    Cheers.

    Tom

Loving the 2nd cloud photo! Well done mate, and again, great photos! Keep up the good work :)

  6. i thought you couldn't eat the fish from the parra ?

    great report though :)

I usually release fish, but she wasnt swimming, i tried for nearly and hour to revive her, but she wasnt up to it. Not much i could do, so i took her home.

  7. all started of catching some fresh bait. Fishing for garfish and other baitfish. Within 30min i had 5 garries in the ice slurry. I dropped ALOT more. I then decided to chase some yakkas and even an odd tailor or two. Another 45min went past i had two tailor going at 32cm and 30cm, and five yakkas in the ice slurry. Went home had some dinner

Packed up my gear, and headed up to the parramatta river. Trek of a walk, but got there. There was a lovely asain couple fishing there, that was more then kind to let me fish next to them. They only arrived 10 minutes before me and had caught a just legal bream. The guy and I were talking and he said he had seen Jewies been caught were we were fishing, i thought it was gonna be a good night! After 10mins they caught another 2 nice bream and my jewies rods were out and the waiting game begins. They caught another 2 nice bream in the space of around 45mins and a decent eel. They left after that, and was only me. I waited 2 hours and nothing, them my bream rod with half a pilchard went off, really good fight, was suprised it was only a 28cm bream. Decided to pack up and go home, i noticed my jewie rod with a yakka on it getting some bite, then it went off. There was only on thought in my mind...JEWIE... i set the hooks and then it snagged me. I free spooled the line, and felt it slowly swim out, then put the reel into gear and bang, brought it in, but there was only dead weight. I shinned my touch down, and it was a MASSIVE bream!

Pulled her up, measured it, 47.5cm! I was stocked. Would have liked the Jewie, but im not complaining. I tired to release her, but she wouldnt swim, i acttualy tried for nearly an hour, but she wouldnt swim. So i decided to take it home, i felt bad, but didnt want to waste the fish. I got home at 1:30am but it was all worth it. Sorry for the long report, ill try post up pictures later!

    Cheers, Zac

  8. Hey everyone I'm looking for a new kingy setup for the harbour.. do you think 3500 sized rell would be right? and I was also wondering if a snapper soft plastic rod would be ok for fishing for kingies.. any suggestions on any other combo? thanks!

4000 sized reel, 10kg soft plastic rod, 20lb braid generally and leaders would vary depending on location and situation. Maybe saying what you budget is, would get you more specific responses.

    Cheers,Zac

  9. A mate caught 4 on Tuesday, 2 on live squid, 1 on a squid hood and another on a live yakka, between 67-92cm. But cant remember where in the hawkesbury, and also what Pete said with some being caught on soft plactics

Got a spare seat on your boat? :1prop:

    Cheers, Zac

  10. G'day,

From land based spinning for salmon and tailor to casting livies off the sand for big Mulloway, I exclusivly use overheads. But certainly not a lever drag model. I consistently out cast threadlines when throwing lures. It is much more comfortable to cast big baits and livies, due to grasping the spool with your thumb rather than capturing the line with your finger while loading up for a cast. You can fish the reel out of gear and feather the line with your thumb to allow a fish to pick up the bait and run with virtually no tension at all, then engage the reel and set the hook. Also I personally feel more comfortable fighting big fish on overhead tackle.

When i first started brawling beach Jews I used a ABU 7000C3 with an upgraded drag and 30lb braid. Despite catching a few good Mulloway, several big whalers and more than its fair share of dunkings and only basic maintanence, the reels still performs flawlessly. They are a simple, well constructed and reasonable priced reel, which would suit your purpose like a glove. Not to mention, they cast brilliantly.

HOWEVER! and its a big however. To cast an overhead takes alot of practice and a little while to master. When starting out you can expect some monumentle birdnestsb (over runs), which when fishing with braid can become extremely expensive and frustrating. But once mastered you'll never look back.

A baitrunner would also make a great choice, and is much simpler to use and doesn't require the dedication of an overhead. But its just not my personel preferance. As for extra line capacity, don't be too concerned. A few hundred meters is more than enough when fishing genuine 30lb tackle. I've never had a jew run anywhere near that far, and a king will have you dusted well before you conceed that much line.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you go

    Cheers

I highly reccomend these reels. There great, tuff reels and can take alot of punishment. Iv'e lost how many times ive dropped my Abu 7000 down rocks and onto solid concrete and dunked it acouple times and still works perfectly. They cast an absolute mile. But i do agee with OutdoorDan, they take a while to get used to but once you get over that, there great reels!

    Cheers, Zac

  11. Want to get a new spin Jewie beach rod and reel and came acroos these rod on Motackle:

    dont think so/index.cfm?pr=product&product_id=7450

Was thinking about getting the 12ft 6-12kg, but wanted to get some feedback on it. So has anyone used these rods?

    Cheers, Zac

  12. Hey Predator,

Nice catch buddy. When you said you caught them with cabbage weed, did you mean the type of cabbage weed you generally get off the surf rocks, not the stringy type weed in the estuaries? Sorry for my ignorance I am just taking up black-fishing again after a long time off.

    Cheers Skulli

Yea, the cabbage type weed that you usually get of the surf rocks, the blackfish were eating both types of weed, but the cabbage was getting the bigger fish compared to the striny type weed.

    Hey Zac

Did you end up meeting an old fella down there called Dan? He would of been fising with an okuma reel and maroon daiwa rod.

If so that was my Dad.

    Con

haha yea, i did. Nice bloke he was, think i over heard him talking to you one the phone and he said you said thatsomeone baggeg out in the same spot yesterday, we didnt even come close :P

    Cheers, Zac

  13. Ill try and keep this short and simple, got an assignment due tomorrow and havent started :05:

I decided to head down to Gladsville to try and tempt some Blackfish, with my New Tsunami rod, that was soooooo kindly gave to me for free (your a legend Anthony :thumbup: ) Started off at around 11am, fished till about 3:30pm. Caught 4 fish in total, missed two downs. Biggest was 43cm and smallest was around the 35cm mark so not bad. All were caught on Cabbage.

  16. Ive been trying to catch a jewie for 2 years now, and still havent caught one! Ive had what i think was one which i hooked up to about 6 months ago, but i didnt strike it, i just sat the rod down and left the drag loose, walked off and i wasnt keeping my eye on it, then came back about 45mins later to my drag going of and picked the rod up and tightened the drag up and i was on, fought it for abit then busted me of on a pylon about 10 metres in front of me. And i havent had anything yet really.

But now its school holidays, soo im going to try and get out as many days as i can and try and catch on, and i was just thinking if i do get that run, when do i strike?

    Straight away?

    Wait a couple of seconds?

    Wait for the second run?

Or i even heard of people just leaving the reel on fighting drag and let the Jewie look them selfs?

    ohh at im landbased too?

    Cheers, Zac

  17. Was pissing down rain last night, thought to my self, stuff it ill go fishing. Was thinking about going somewhere undercover, maybe a wharf or something? Stuff it couldnt be bother going that far, ill just go some where around the corner. Set of at around 5 or 6, found a nice spot near a marina, above the water.

Still pissing down rain, set up my bait rod to try and catch some yakkas, but nothing for around 1 hour, except 6 small bream, biggest going 23cm. Set up one of my new jewie combos with a whole pillie to try and catch a tailor, and was abit bored so put a whole pillie on my bait rod, the pillie on the bait rod was out for 15 second before it got smashed! ZZZZZZzzZZZZZzzz, set the hooks, its a good fishing, then i see something swimming under my feet, it was a big eel, thought nothing of it, then my line was going in the same derection as the eel, and it wasnt stopping, it slows down abit and comes to the surface, but was under the wharf marina thing in the dark and i couldnt see what it was, its was splashing and rolling on the surface then took another big dive..ZZZZzzZZZZZZZZZ....ping! :BangHead: But i wasnt to angry, i kinda knew it was a eel.

The rain lightened up and my Abu 7000 was going off, i set the hooks, heavy with a couple of big head shakes, long story short, in comes a mid 50's flathead. But it in a esky filled with water will i get the camera, a couple of pic and send her on her ways. Out goes another two pillies, and it goes quiet for around 45 mins.

My baitcaster is getting acoule of bites, i set the hooks not a bad fish, in comes a 26cm breams acouple of pic then back in she goes. I wind my Abu in and theres on the head left, soo out goes another one, 5 mins later was getting some good bites, i set the hooks and in comes a 32cm break, not to bad. Then i see some small fish swimming around in the shallows, throw a bit of pillie on a hook, and in comes a yakka, caught about 5 then sent two out, one on my new Abu 7000 and New Daiwa Opus Bull 6000. Now its just a waiting game.

Half an hour later, the rod tip on my Abu 7000 was going a lil spastic, and i noticed something on the surface where my livie was, and every time its splashed my rod tip would bend and what not. And every time there was a splash, it would take a lil bit of line, this was going on for about 5 mins, soo pick up the rod, and when it ran, i tried to set the hooks, theres weight and a lot of weight! Then the line went slack! :BangHead: :angry4:

Wind it back in, and theres no yakka, just two 6/0 hooks, out goes another yakka, and there something in the water, 2 things swimming side by side, on a closer look, there squid, i rushed to tie on a squid jig on a handline, and thorw it out, i see a white shadow, following the squid jig, i give it 2 hard jerks then let it sink, bang, its on i got a squid, inking every where but luckly didnt get me. I send it out livie, and nothing for about 30 mins and decide to call it a night. Not a bad night.

Sorry for the long report haha, ill try and put pic up when i find the cord for the camera

    Cheers, Zac :wave1:

  18. Braid of the beach?

    Yes or no?

Should i just save my money and buy some mono? or is there certain advantages that braid has over mono on a beach?

I heard the sometimes sand can get in the braid, and make it weak

? and even snap from rubbing against the sand?

Would it have extra sensitivity over mono on a beach?

Would it stay tighter? like it wouldnt have the same big diameter of mono and wouldnt get caught by the wind or current/waves that much?

Sorry im new to beac fishing and really wanna get into it.
