  1. Hi all

Im looking forward to catching some kingies this season but i was wondering if anyone has been having any luck with them in botanybay lately?

I havent been hearing much about people catching them yet this year and ive always thought that they started coming into the bay around Nov.

If anyones been onto a kingy in the bay lately id love to know what size and baits

I dont really know, but there are a tonne of them in sydney harbour now!

    Cheers, Zac

  2. Thanks every one!

I was on the jetty next to the iron cove brige on Drummoyne side.

It was 70cm long dont know how much it weighed?

With live bait i just get a big bucket chuck them in with some water and if i see one upside down and its still alive i change all the water and they say alive for ages.

Yer i was using my snappa hemingway rod, there top rod!!

    Cheers, Zac

  3. I braved the rain today, to see what was around, incase it started to piss down i just went down the road instead of balmain. Any way fished for some podddies for about 30 min and got about 10 of them. Rigged up my jewies rod, put a poddie on, check my knot just incase, out she goes and hopefully into a jewies or big flattys mouth.

Rigged up another two rods one for yakkas and one for what ever likes a pillie, a charter boat comes in and we have abit of a talk then another charter boat comes in, so i put the jewie rod up against the railing facing birkenhead point, so i think why not cast it in so i do a little lop and put the rod back down again close the bail arm and walk away as the people walk of i hear

    "Oi mate, you got one"

I turn around and find ive got a fish one, a good one too!

I set the hook and its a good fight, short power full runs, every one gets off the charter boat to get a better view, it takes my for a walk up and down the rock wall, the orperator of the charter gets of with a net to try and help me 10 mins later i had my very first kingfish!!

Every one gives me a pat on the back and some say,

" i payed so and so for this charter and you catch this type of fish LB"

"That bigger than all the fish we caught together"

I was soo happy, the charter operator measured it and killed it for me, why cant the world have more people like that!

I pack up and headed home.

It wouldnt fit in my bucket so i carryed it home every sencond car honked and tooted at me to say good work!

    One car even shouted

" GOOD F***ING WORK, YOU F***ING YOUNG GUN"!

That just made it even better.

When got home i really wanted to show my mum, but she already left for work, so instead i walked up the road to the tackle shop, then my day got even better, they where all happy for me and congrationlatting (sorry cant spell) me.

Got home bleed it, scaled it and gutted it, and to my surprise all i found it its stomach was either baby prawns or shrimp and there was 100's of them.

Into the freezer she goes, im going to leave a note for mum and its going to say "there is something big in the freezer."

Sorry about long post but im really excited and happy!

    Post pics up later

    Cheers, Zac

  4. Some tackle shops have them, but its not hard to pump them up yourself, doesn't take too long, a nice big bucket with an aerator and they'll keep for a day or so.

Buying a yabbie pump, a bucket (probaly already have one) and a aerator, would probaly be cheaper then buying yabbys.

  5. yeah definitely the oysters, and they seemed like the shape of bull mullet.. bream are usually a bit deeper, these were thinner.

There were some dark looking small fish working around the surface.. I think they're poddy mullet though

Couldnt see much about the triangular fish, didn't catch any of them

Try and catch some, and im sure some one on FR will ID it.

    Cheers, Zac

  6. Well I did say it was from a stream.. it's like one of those man-made open drainage systems, just locate the source of any waterway and you should find some. Got this in the Menai area, I had to go walk in the bushes to get it.

I reckon it would work, but theres only one way to find out, well there is another way, ask some one :1prop:

    Cheers, Zac

  7. I think it depends what your preference is mate i prefer braid for flicking plastics and hard bodies because i can really feel every little nip and i think it's easier to tell the difference between a snag and a bite.

but i like mono because it's less visible and if you get a heavy strike on a stiff tipped rod i feel more comfortable knowing how close it is to breaking because of the stretch :)

If you're using the right rod it's action and reaction to the strike should be as good as you need to set the hook anyway :)

    Cheers and beers, Mick

I would say one spool of each, apparently if you use braid when beach fishing the sand can get into the weaves and stuff the braid up but i dont know if ths true or not??

Yer so one spool of each, i agree with cfw braid for sp's and hb's and i like to use mono for bait fishing exept blackfishing then ill use braid, but thats just another opinoin and it entirley up to you

    Hope this helps

    Cheers, Zac

  8. thanks for the input guys, how much line on your spool is enough line for kings ??? or is this a case of "how longs a bit of string" ?

and i dont mind either eggbeater or overhead.

    thanks.

I would say 200 - 300 should be fine. But i dont think really anything will rip 150+ metres of line let a lone spool you.

    Cheers, Zac

  9. thanks for the comments guys, yeah landbased, and gear - 2500 diawa tierra 6lb fireline braid, 8lb flouro leader, 1/8oz size 1/0 jighead with powerbait 3" mullet for the jewie and squidgie princess(110mm) for the flattie and the rod is tcurve t series spin662 2-5kg.

only just purchased this rod and it is fantastic, and using lighter gear my catch rate has increased......i have previously used a sol combo wih 10lb braid and flouro catching still, but since swapping to lighter its definitely improved my catch rate.....i was suprised actually. ive never actually plasticked a bream yet though, do u guys recommend even lighter line for the spare spool???

    cheers

    mick

I would say 6lb -4lb flurocarbon but if your near structure i would go 6lbb - 12lb flurocarbon but it entirley up to you.

I know a guy that uses 1lb braid and 2lb flurocarbon leader for bream and landed a 80cm flatty once but i havent talked to him in a while but imagine hooking a jewie or king on that gear!! lol

    Cheers, Zac

  10. If your looking for a challange 300m 20lb braid ( just in case but you will probaly neever get spooled) 20 - 30lb leader, 10kg rod 7ft to 8ft, 4000 - 5000 sized reels and yer spinoutfit

But i would use 30lb - 50lb braid, 15kg or 24kg spin rod 7ft boat or anything up to 10ft landbased, 6000 up to a 14000, leader 60lb - 100lb, strong knots, hooks and swivels.

But one of my mates uses 80lb braid and 230lb leader and still gets busted of by kings ( in sydney harbour)!!

    Cheers, Zac

  11. Went fishing on the jetty down the road, see if i can land a blackie or two. Got down, there was some wind but it was still fishable. Made up the burley, rigged up, couple hand fulls of burley now its a waiting game. Watching the float go past me nothing for half a hour, changed dept, within 10 mins got a down

    STRIKE!!

The rod buckles over its a good fish, its pull line of the reel like no theres no tomorrow, 3 big dive for freedom...

    SNAP!!

    DAMN IT!!

Rig up again, put some weed on, out it gos along with some burley, waiting waiting and waiting, The floats acting weird down then up again down, up so i strike and im baited. Put some more bait on but not a down for about 2 hours, oh well thats blackfishing, rigged up another rod paternoster rig snapper sinker on the bottom, size 10 suicide on the bottom and size 1 suicide on the top, peice of prawn on the bottom and a whole prawnon the top, nip nip

    BANG!!

On to a good leatherajacket it nearly bricked me on the pylon, it somes up to the surface a 40cm six spine leatherjaket, after swearing to never eat a fish out of sydney harbour exept Jewies, kings and pelagics it goes back into the drink. put abit more prawn on. Im on again another leatherjacket, caught about 8 or 9 in the space of 30min biggest being 40cm smallest being 30cm, but there was a special on i had about 5 prawns left so i cut on up into small peices and put 4 on the size 1 suicide hook it gos down bang im on to a 33cm leatherjacket pull it up then see a big flash on silver swipe at the jaket, open the bail arm down the jacket goes....

    BANG!!!

It was a good fight a leatherjacket and the mystery fish it come up to the surface its a big tailor(well for iron cove), a 42cm tailor and a 33cm leatherjaket, decided to call it a day. What ever left over bait i usually have i always throw into the water i thro some chicken out hope fully some bream with have some thing to eat and i throw some bread into the shallow water then there is some good mullet, poddy mullet, and bream big and small boofying up on the surface eating the bread, so a quick run to the shops and buy some bread with in 5 min i caught 1 good sized mullet 4 poddys and 4 small bream. Then i dicided to keep the bread and head home.

Sorry for it being so long and all fish where realesed.

    Cheers, Zac

  12. I know alot of people are protective of there spot where they get there weed and cabbage, but maybe can you help a young angler???

    Cheers, Zac

  13. Was thinking about going to parramatta to try and target some carp, but dont know anything about them except they love corn and they fight hard, so any tips.

And will the rain have any affect on the fishing?

Rigs and stuff like that, any info will be greatly apprecianted

    Cheers,Zac

  14. Never used plastics before, and thought it would be fun to give it a go. Went to randomly purchase a packet of gulp nuclear chicken 3" minnows today. Is this a good choice (I chose these mainly due to the striking colours)? I'm not looking at chasing a specific type of fish as yet (at this stage, any fish would do I guess, just hoping some fish would bite!)..

Based on your experience, what kind of fish would I likely get with these nuclear chicken minnows?

Also, is it necessary to have different kind of plastics? like different flavours, shapes, etc.? I normally do land-based fishing.

Can't wait to give plastics a go! :1fishing1::biggrin2:

That should be good on flatties and decent bream mate

  15. My brother-in-law has a property near Hervey Bay in Qld. He has a dam a bit bigger in size but not quite that deep. He stocked it with yellowbelly. We quite often catch them out of there. Good fun to catch on lures and fly. We decided to eat one that we caught and even though the water in the dam is pretty clear it still had a muddy taste to it. Good sport though.

    Howard

Dont yellowbellys need flowing water to spawn??

Dont know if you want them to spawn but i thought it might help?

    Cheers, Zac
