  1. The only thing I cant protect and gets cold is my neck. Is there any type of 'socks' you can get to pull over your head and wear on your neck? A scarf is impractical on the boat and gets in the way.
  2. Thanks for that.. Can I get some feedback from people with the 585 or 620 Furuno. How deep have they taken there units and how did they perform?
  3. I see, thanks mate. How big is the 1KW transducer? And what is a 'box'?
  4. Im hunting down a new sounder that will work well (good) offshore. Im having some trouble working out how much power is enough to get a good reading in deep water. I used to have a Lowrance 125X with 2500W of power that says it can go up to 275m deep and the thing is USELESS in water over 25m deep. Sure it picks up the bottom but the screen hardly scrolls (moves) and basically stays in the same spot. Another sounder my mate has is a 3000W Hummingbird and this is better, but as soon as we get into water 120m deep or more the screen scrolls across slower and slower the deeper we go and hardly moves even on the highest setting. Again, useless. Im no expert but Im pretty sure this is because the unit is having troubble penetrating the deep water. Im thinking of getting the 585 Furuno with the 1KW transducer. Will this read the bottom AND scroll across at a decent speed in deep water offshore? Say out at Browns Mountain? What are some of you guys fishing out there using and how do you find the units? Thanks for any responses... Sorry had the wrong power (W) been edited now.
  5. Hmmm, Im still learning but from what I know so far LCD's reproduce fast moving images better when they have 100Hz instead of 50HZ. And as far as I know the 81cm Sonys and Samsungs are still only 50HZ? Is this right? The ones I know that are using 100HZ are Philips, Toshiba and Panasonic...
  6. For all the tech people haha. Im looking at buying a new LCD TV and have settled on either a 66cm or 81cm (32inch). Im looking at the best possible on the market but in these sizes you cant seem to get full high definition. Anyway my question is which would be the best on the market at the moment? I would prefer the 66cm size but from what I have found the top 81 cm TV's have less motion blur so I am leaning to this size as they seem to be a better unit. Any advice is welcome..
  7. I use Fireline and Rapala braid and not only are they very strong for there ratings, Ive never had any tangle problems with them. I dont see any reason to use anything else. Ive got a mag at home thats tests about 50 of the braids on the market and fireline was in the top 3 for all the strength tests. They didnt test rapala braid but Ive done my own tests and its better than fireline! The braid you use has a lot to do with wind knots I rekon...
  8. Sounds like a pretty good morning hey...Makes you wonder just what kind of size those ones are that pull heavy drag like that...
  9. All good info....Ill just add that when using strips, use non offset hooks to stop the bait spinning like a helicopter and looking unnatural. While trolling, test it out in the water first before lowering to make sure it doesnt spin...
  10. Yeh same... Mollinouex Pt. Use your sounder and drop your baits right on them! Too easy.. Although I dont anchor. I find where they are and then use electric to stay on top.
  11. Hahahahahahahahaha Drop fresh squid if you can!...
  12. I dont know mate but if it needs a new screen and transducer, prolly cheaper to get a whole new one?
  13. Oh well, better luck next time hey...
  14. Matey, my advice is to not try and reverse a trailer on the ramp for the first time. Even if it is quiet, the ramp slopes down and is narrow, and could take you ages when all you want to do is go fishing. Practise somewhere else first. Look out the back and remember you are PUSHING the trailer and think about where the back of the car is going and how it is pushing the trailer. I know some people that just cant do it hahahaha..... no matter how much they practise.
  15. Oh I forgot. An anode is a small thing you put on the motor to stop corrosion. Its is an expendable item and will corrode first before anything it is attached to, thus saving your motor.
  16. Yeh matey. You can fit an anode on the propeller that comes standard on the saltwater model. It supposedly will give you a bit more protection from corosion. Order it from where they sell Minn Kota. Personally, I dont think it will make much difference if anything at all. I didnt have one on mine for ages and there was no corosion. I fitted one now and the anode hasnt eroded at all for years. I wouldnt be concerened to use it without one.
  17. Yeh it was a bit quiet out on the Bay Today. I freekin got smashed up 3 times on kings! I havnt caught one for a while and wasnt ready for the clamp down style they needed 5metres from structure. They done me over in about 2 seconds. I was daydreaming too much I think hahahaha. Oh well...
  18. Dude the blood knot is very good for mono, but is not very strong when tied in braid. The best for braid is a bimini or plait double. Try it out. Tie each knot and try and snap it as see which is stronger. Why not put a mono leader onto your braid via a bimini twist and then tie your swivels etc to the mono? Thats how I do it. Much stronger. PS. My mate lost a jewie of a lifetime on a dodgy locked blood knot tied in his 30LB braid. He had a 20Lb mono leader and the 30Lb braid let go first. Lesson learnt thats for sure...
  19. I like it! Ive been in tinnies like that without a floor and they are not much fun...Your makeover would make fishing trips way more enjoyable. Good job. Why not keep going, give it a coat of paint etc?
  20. Everyone has there preferences but I would recommend and personally use a spinner. You cant beat it for casting unweighted plastics/baits and when there is a bit of a breeze. Wind knots- I never have a problem. Something is not right if your getting wind knots. I dont think you need an expensive reel to avoid wind knots either. Something is not right- the brand of line, overfilled spool or guides on wrong.
  21. Nah its too weak I reckon. All those loop knots are weak. I use a half blood knot with no lock. The lock weakens the knot. Ive done heaps of knot testing and this is a very good knot. Make sure its tied well with all the loops nice and even when pulled tight and it will NEVER slip. If its not even, tie it again. Pull the knot tight from the main line only and give it a test pull before using. I use the same knot for leader to bimini double connection and its the strongest connection I have tested and Ive sat around for hours trying all the popular knots. Although it does have to be done a particular way that I cant explain here.
  22. Ok thanks for he replys. Sounds like the deepest water Im ever likely to come across in a trailer boat off sydney is at Browns at approx 450m. Is that right? Just on the sounders, Ill ask here while Im at it. What depths approximately does your 200KHz frequency run out of steam and you start to use 50KHz. From what I can gather 200KHz gives a better reading so you would persist with this until you have to swap to 50KHz.
  23. Im buying a new sounder and want to make sure I have enough power to get good readings out wide... What is the approximate depth around Browns Mountain, and the various reefs etc off Sydney? And just out of curiosity, how deep is it after the Continental Shelf, and how big is the drop? Thanks guys...
  24. You can spend a stacks of money for a high quality charger but I reckon one of the automotive ones you get from super cheap/ big w etc are good enough. Look for around 5-10amps charge rate. Any less and it takes too long to charge but will still work. And I prefer one that stops automatically when the battery is full. Some dont stop and have to be monitored and switched off manually.
