  1. if you have a dirty great big hole right in close but there is a bar at the entrance to it that is closing out with 4ft barrels, would you bother fishing it? my theory (and experience) is that fish esp jew can't access the hole because it is pounding on the bar. you might get a chopper or a sambo near the high tide, but we've never hooked a jew in such conditions. interesting to hear your thoughts. been getting any, stix?
  2. Cheers lawrie. I reckon they're in such a hurry to scoff it not only due to competition between others in the school (although i'm convinced they don't school that hard in sydney! too bloody few fish) but because the food could quickly get away in the washing machine. i'm a fan of fishing the bars when seas are small and there's little movement in the gutters...usually using squid but worms would go great guns. hmmm, does an occy leg look like a worm?
  3. would like to give that method a go but unfortunately we can't get those thumper king worms down here in syd. would you reserve fishing the sandbars for small sea conditions or you reckon jew would still move into 4ft of water in washing machine conditions with 3ft of whitewash over the top...

    Copacabana Beach

considering how flat the swell is fish the area with the most wash.
  5. got them on cuttly, joe.
  6. like i said to you and bez, ya shoulda stayed for the arvo!
  7. one comment about the experiment done and written up in Fisho, it would have been good to see the numbers of fish that died due to deep (in throat) vs shallow hookup out of the total fish that died out of the group that was hooked (noting that gut hooked fish were not counted as a part of the mortality count).
  8. Paul, i suppose it would be good to compare the laboratory results vs in-field results. In field results may be more representative as they include the variability in fish treatment prior to release (eg, weighing, handling wet or dry hands, whether fish is carefully handled, time out of water etc), however the extended time taken to transport the fish to to sea cage from location of capture is of concern. I doubt participating fishos would high-tail it from the spot to the sea cage if there was a hot bite! Fish would sit in a live well possibly for hours. Live wells are fine for 1kg bream, but probably not for a 2 ft long jewie. Also, what happens if a 20L bucket is used as substitute for a live well, how do you account for that? I think you would need to include a time-of-transfer factor in the study, as fish that are released would be released within a few minutes of capture.

  11. a mate of mine uses 60lb handlines at juno...
  12. be aware that Shelley Beach is a nudie beach (tho probably wont have that problem this time of year! )
  13. were those boulders dumped there after the storm for some sort of erosion protection? pfffttthhh they aren't gonna do a thing (except maybe wash away) in the next storm...
  14. keen angler, reeso! kevvie, like nig's bleed, fillet and skin the black drummer, lightly dust in flour then pan fry in olive oil on medium heat, season and serve. also great battered and deep fried, and in stir fry (chuck thin slices into the stir fry at the last minute otherwise it will overcook and fall to bits). i like black drummer better than bream. never tried a silver but they apparently taste pretty crappy.
  15. black drummer are sensational...10x better tasting than nig's. ya wouldn't get them at cremorne i would think but...most ocean rocks fish or outer harbour. maybe black trevally you are thinking of?
  16. bluecod! shhhh i know where that rock is too... there are some monsters at manly wharf...seen 3lbers there at night in the lights. they graze over the weedbeds during hte day on either side of hte wharf. me and a mate had a good go at them 2 weeks ago using tackle that wasn't particularly finesse...i think the 6lb fluoro trace helps but. late arvo, after 3pm, high tide was when they turned on.
  17. looks like an old school pic! when didja get those? top fish...
  18. if i was fishn where you think i was i definitely woulda sent it back out! super beaky bait that.
  19. DON'T try drilling a hole it will shatter the jewel! if it doesn't shatter straight away it may at a later stage due to wear and tear where do you live...there is a bead shop in chatswood which sells stuff you could use...i made mine using a small metal bell-cap (usually used to make pendants out of crystals), these are round but using pliers you can flatten it to fit the narrow end of jewel (fits perfectly for a 50lber ) i used clear araldite to make the bond small split ring to connect to the bell-cap then leather string or chain etc to complete. snapped the jewel on my first (they are brittle!) and lost my second necklace...still got 2 spares... this pic shows the necklace...
  20. we headed up there early this year and despite all advice saying to use the creek, it was far from navigable even at half tide. jammed out thru the river entrance which although there were a few breakers, they were generally small and with a decent lull we got out ok. coming in was interesting with a mid-ebbing tide! heard that beach launching behind the wall near the gaol is by far the safest option, if your boat/car/trailer are equipped to do so.
  21. if it's any consolation i heard it was pretty quiet out wide on the weekend.
  22. fishmarket squid sucks for bait.
  23. hey grozzo any swell where you were? seas are dead flat in syd so we've written off the beach sessions.
