  1. high bacteria (pathogens to be exact) levels due to poo are a problem in every waterway in syd with an urban catchment, mainly after rain. these are killed after a few days of sunlight. i would think it is EPA's responsibility for warnings? after all they do the beachwatch reports.
  2. mate that is the tackle we use for BIG kings (50lbers) - no need for such gear in the harbour, besides harbour fish would get spooked by 80lb trace. stick to mono as it is much more abrasion resistant than braid of the same breaking strain, another thing to note is you wont stop a decent king from reefing you by sheer brute force, they'll pull harder than you can give.
  3. council (warringah or pittwater - not sure) commissioned a WQ study, done in 2000, i think (a friend worked on it). as far as "toxins" go - it doesnt have the heavy industrial activity that the harbour used to have so it is relatively clean, for a big city waterway

    Squidding?

that's cos everyone clued on to palmy and cleaned out the squid population
  5. ummm the lagoon entrance was at best about a foot deep when it was open last... i wonder where chris leslie REALLY caught that jew! cagey bugger... and i'm surprised someone recaught that bronzie i lobbed in the lake a month ago!
  6. is it really that much of a surprise? we see sea turtles very regularly at certain spots on the north coast. sometimes i think something's amiss if we DON'T see one. might be different species though.
  7. totally depends if you're using mono main line or gsp or braid. with gsp (and finer mono for that matter) need to up the number of twists for bimini, and number of cycles for plait. 30 twist bimini has not failed for me for 6-15kg (though i prefer to do plaits - 1.5 to 2 inch plait ddepending how i'm feeling). for light gsp/fireline say 4lb i'd do a 50 turn bimini. can't be bothered plaiting light gsp and mono 4kg and under, sends me crosseyed learned to tie a plait while on the rocks when i couldn't get help from a mate to do a bimini (fish were going nuts!)

    Sword Fish

yes they did target swords out of merimbula with some success in the past (10-15yrs ago) dunno if they still do.

    Sword Fish

a mate of mine (who incidentally used to be a deckie on prime time) may have gone on the same expedition. they did head out to heaton's but not really knowing what they were doing, drifted waay off heatons and ended some way past the gong. so for most of the night they were fishing dead water.
  10. more chance of getting a hit, maybe (chances are if you got a decent bait on, any jew in the hole will find it) but i still reckon you lower your chance of getting a positive hookup by not actively setting the hook yourself.
  11. i agree on one rod policy. not enough control o nthe strike if the rod goes off in the holder - i prefer to give the fish a metre or 2 with rod in hand then set the hook. hooked plenty with this method and lost plenty with the rod in holder.
  12. macks and frigates are green on their backs stripeys have a purple/blue back with stripes on the underside - my bet on a stripey longtails/blues dont get that small around here.
  13. the doc heard of the capture and was keen to get a hold of the specimen, but unfortunately (for him anyway) the fish was released.
  14. changa, dug this up on the net. scroll about 3/4 down to juvenile marlin diagram, very similar to the micro stickface (twigface? ) http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Gallery/Desc...hiteMarlin.html
  15. pretty sure it's a baby marlin rather than a sail. not sure the species though.
  16. you reckon a cod, even that big, could swim all the way to gladesville towing an adult human??? i have heard this story before but thinks it could be more myth than truth!!!
  17. no...just having a bit of a joke
  18. most guys i know use a special mullet lure (4/0 treble)
  19. Spoke to a client who is a council engineer and he said that council would not open the lake mechanically until the water reaches a certain level (another 0.4m or so). so pray for more rain...
  20. a jew wouldn't bite through 40lb so unless it was a nick in the trace (which may be possible if the previous fish ran towards the pylons) it was probably a bitey of some sort. anyway...nice fish.
  21. my guess: seal rocks/broughton cabbage tree and other PS islands (maybe fingal?) myall lakes smiths lake
  22. I thought they'd been quite ok with forecasting local storms lately.
  23. only about 5-10mm in the narra catchment last night so not enough. but boy was it coming down at my joint! (artarmon). you can expect further (slow) increases in water levels over the next few days as groundwater seeps into the creeks and then lake. still needs about 0.4m increase before council will open the lake.
  24. lake level needs to be at a certain level (at 1m gauge height i think) for it to be worthwhile opening the lake for 2 reasons: 1. no immediate threat to shoreline properties from flooding until approx 1m (edit: found a reference on council's website refering to a trigger water level of 1.3m AHD but this is from an old report and level may have changed since then) 2. higher water level = more water escaping when lake is opened = deeper entrance = longer time for entrance to be naturally blocked = longer time between opening events = less cost for council (+ better for lake and fishos) edit - also found this in a report on council website: "The study found that maintenance dredging at 1 or 2 year intervals was the most economically suitable frequency and the most desirable from all criteria assessed. A maintenance strategy incorporating this frequency was recommended."
  25. i'd advise against steel wool treatment - as it will also scratch the blank. if you are happy with the guide spacings on the rod, you could just rebind the new guides in the same spot, taking care to cover up the old, unremoved patches of epoxy with the overbind. the tip will come off with heating if it has been glued on with superglue, but won't if done with araldite.
