  1. Is it a labour party or a socialist party :1yikes:

The other problem with the labour party is they rely on green preferences therefore the greens get a say in policies which means lock out marine parks and national parks Pity about the demise of the democrats which were there to keep the b*****ds honest

She can't be any worse than Rudd. I hope there is a cabinet reshuffle - at least then we have a chance of getting a Minister with at least half a brain! As for the Opposition (Coalition) Abbott is a dud as well I would only vote for Joe Hockey myself.

  2. Sunday morning broke to find a very excited Flanman (leave pass stamped and in hand) and a very hungover Big Mac(cut to the gills from too many bottles of red the night before).

Given that the Flanman had his passed stamped there was nooooooo way he was going to forgo a fishing trip on our beloved Paris (Bertie 25)

The Big Marn was force fed coffee as soon as he got on board and we steamed over the bombora off Dobroyd Point to bottom bash and see what was biting. 90 minutes of berley and pickers saw only two parrot fish in the tank and it was decided to up anchor and investigate the activity under all the birds that were working in the middle of the harbour. The birds were certainly busy but we could not work out exactly what they were getting excited about. The consensus was tailor, who were both fast moving and not really interested in anything that was thrown their way.

We then decided to anchor of Middle Head out of the breeze and see if we could raise any fish there. There were several other boats with the same idea as it was protected adn between all of us we took it in turns to catch the same undersized cockney.

We decided it was time to go around 10.45am and this is when the fun began.

As we started winching up the anchor it proceeded to become stuck, and I mean really stuck. It was about 8m deep and as we have 20m of chain we were between a rock and a hard place. It did not matter which way we pulled or turned, it wasn't coming out.

We then sat and weighed up our options

    1. Let out the chain and cut the rope, hoping that if we tied a bouy to it it would still be there to salvage with a diver. Given that we are talking about a $400 anchor and $300 worth of chain (we know this as we lost our last anchor at North Head last year)it was an option that was with little appeal.

    2. Swim down and attach a rope to the front of the anchor and see if we could pull it out that way.

This is where the 'Big Marn', hangover and all, got down to his 'Reg Grundy's' and jumped in. He figured it was only a bit deeper than the deep end of the pool (who was I to tell him otherwise?)

Attached to one end of the rope, the plan was to swim down and loop it through so we could pull it out. A couple of deep breaths and down he goes for what seemed only a few seconds. My initial though was that he could not get down deep enough, but as he surfaced, he was yelling at me to pull it up as it was now free.

As it turned out, it had become lodged under a ledge, where the sand finishes and the rocks start and all he did was grab it and pull it out. He reliably informed me that anchors, even when they are under water, are still really heavy.

After a quick towel off and a medicinal beverage, of the hairy dog variety, we were under way.

So there you have it, all you other boats that were looking on, on Sunday morning, wondering what the clowns in the Bertie were up to, your questions have been answered!

    Happy Birthday BIG MARN

    RESPECT!

Great post & funny as :Funny-Post: (cause I wasn't the one jumping in the water) :074:

  4. Only yourself, Stewy. Thanks for all the energy you put into the site too and all the work you do introducing so many people to fishing and then helping them along the learning curve... it all comes from being so passionate about fishing mate and it's much appreciated by many many Raiders.

    Cheers, Slinky

Ditto on that mate! Thanks for you personal tuition Stewy - I'll be a gun at tying knots in no time (or a knot head)

  7. Hi everyone, Just thought I'd like to share my joy with my first boat. Its a 4.5 metre Cuddy Cabin with a 70hp Yamaha outboard engine. I picked it up online for a decent price. Boat comes with everything I need and I don't have to fix anything at all. Just waiting at the moment to do my practical hours to fill out my log book then of to do my license test. Words cannot express the excitement of having my own boat. Does anyone know whether it is neccessary to purchase insurance on the boat? Im quite new to the scene and one of my mates who owns a boat said that there is no need to get insurance for a cheap boat. Also does the under 25 rule apply as well? Because if it does then I might have to put it under my fathers name. Sorry I have trouble loading the pics up. I used image shack and it won't keeps saying no files uploaded.

    Hi

Now that you have the post up - try to add the pics as an edit. Its the only way I seem to be able to load mine

Oh - & of course - congrats on your new boat. I know how excited I was when I got mine. :yahoo:

  8. Hi Raiders

First off, I would like to say thank you to Roberta for taking time out of her week end & preparation time for the ABT to take myself & mrs flightmanager (Cath) out fishing last week end.

We met up with Roberta at a great caravan park right on the lake at Tuncurry mid morning waiting for the tide & taking advantage of Roberts' knowledge to choose the best rod 'n' reel/line combination for the area. After waiting for the tide to be right & selecting the correct tackle we took the yaks down to the water & paddled off into a beautiful late morning with a soft breeze & clear skies.

So, for me this was many firsts :fisher:

my first time meeting Roberta & fishing Tuncurry

my first time fishing from a kayak

my first time fishing with a graphite rod & matched reel (just bought for the weekend - I know, I'm already a tragic :074: )

my first time fishing with braid

my first time fishing with SP's ('Squidgy Fish' in 'Silver Fox' - on Roberta's recommendation)

After some coaching on how to cast & retrieve - I eventually got the rhythm & really began to enjoy myself. It was only about 1/2 hr before I hooked my 1st fish - a little dusky flat head - ha - caught myself :1boff:

& as the afternoon progressed caught 2 more, all under sized so no fish for dinner. :05: with many pesky weed fish being pulled in. It was a great day out on the water & I came back to shore to meet up with Cath who had been practicing her casting with some very light braid & caught a tree fish while watching the Tri-Athalon athletes some & go (keeping her occupied till my return).

After bidding Roberta farewell we sat & watched the best sunset with a glass of wine before heading into Forster for dinner.

    some of the highlights!

see you on the water raiders :1boat:
