  1. Hey Jez, just be aware that some places you hire boats from have restrictions on how far out you can go and some wont allow you to take them out of "line of sight" from the boat hire shop- and some of the larger vessels you refer to require for you to have a fully licensed driver as insurance premiums for driving a boat unlicensed are very high.

My suggestion is to do your homework well before you organise a trip- if you get there without doing the required investigations you might be very disappointed on how far you are able to travel in a single day or wiorst case scenario is the may refuse you to hire the baot if you dont have a license or dont have someone on baord who has a license.

Either way hope you manage to get on a boat one day and brain em

  2. got to the beach 6:30pm last night and fishing until 9:30 pm when the kelp was washed in and became a problem. Managed to bag 7 fish, yes, there was a tailor, though not massive. Loved the fat breams!

  3. Pretty much most ferry wharves or pontoons and jetty's should hold some yakkas, wherever there is light, but sadly they can get crowded and thats the good thing about winter- only the die hards go out @ in winter so you only have like 2-6 weeks of that then most will bugger off and go into winter hibernation till spring/early summer.

Google Maps is awesome have a look and get some marine maps you can then cross reference the google map to the marine map to locate the holes/gutters/sand banks before you go out

You can download the marine maps online for free but they are in PDF format, else you can go to Maritime Services they cost $8- per map there are shedloads of them. make things MUCH easier! :biggrin2:

Lookin forwards to hearing bout ya exploits

  5. Thats a great read Tony!

... Hope you dont mind I thought I'd add my own little except from my own poem I wrote about hiw much fishign means to me- and has for a long time:

The changing seasons means we are now greeted by cool crisp mornings, and low orange sunrises. The coming months will give way to the die hard fishos who brave the long winter nights searching for elusive and sometimes mystical creatures of the deep, and the flocks of summer anglers will go into a fitful slumber till spring. I love winter- its a time for true reflection- solo nights and early mornings on the rivers and beaches- pelogics move away up the coast. Surfers adorn their winter steamers amid cold waters where the southerly swells roll in and crash in huge balls of whitewater on the unbroken sand. these combined can provisionally make any die hard jewie or taylor or snapper fisho go weak in the knees. Its the solitude and tranquility of those cold cold mornings and late nights that gets me going, knowing that only the bravest of souls dare to try and tame the winter fish that lurk beneath the rise and fall of the waves. We all ride your own wave in some way- but its true fishing binds us all toghether- the rewards of winter fishing are endless so go out and get some action if you dare! I will be there, the lone soul standing amongst the rolling swells of time, with a long rod in my hand and some strip or worm baits, life it meant to be simple. so why complicate something as pure as fishing with crowds, its the ones why find thier own soul and wear it on their sleeve and are proud of heritage from past family members are the ones who find their own place in the fishing fraternity and reap the rewards they all deserve. fishing is too good to give up, but once you find that "special" spot where you are all alone you know the world is still turning, but time stands still.

Winter fishing is poetry in motion for me, many a night spent on the rivers and beaches in the low light of day, freezing but still optimistic of the warmer waters to come as they bring with them back, the pelagics and fish that we love- but its the darker side that draws me in, like a smiling assassin one could never know the feeling- that is... unless you are a die hard fisho too...

  6. G/W Leo. Trevs are mad fun on silly string!

I got some round same size myself on the coast- right on the peak of the tide got dusted on a big one that went hell for leather early and managed to reach the structure.

Oh well thats fishing and hence the reason why we keep going back.

  7. Nice haul Anthony

I fish brisbane waters a fair bit and find that it can be fickle, but if you know the spots then a regular producer of good fish.

Looks like you know the spots!!

Thanks mate, they are very old spots I just knew they were there, most people fished the racks from what I saw dont know if they got anything though, but I suspect they should have if I was getting into them on the weed beds the rack should have been firing also!

Sounds like you had fun and scored a few fish what could be better than that???

Nice Rig also dying to catch up again might have to get out with both our boats!

    Regards,

    Nathan

Awesome Nathan, thats definitely a plan for the coming weeks. 8. I fished in the Pirtek yesterday with my mate Greg.

We decided to stick around Brisbane Waters and try our luck at some spots I used to fish well over 20years ago.

First cast I snared a 52cm flattie and after that we got into some choppers and yakkas from the same location.

After we got sick of the choppers we moved to the drop off near Woy Woy where I got monstered and hooks didnt stick too well, the result was a catapulting bait back towards the boat. so we decided to move after no more takes.

Lunchtime came and a feed of fresh fish'n'chips from Fishermans Co-op on Woy Woy we hit up Saratoga/Davidtown and found a good patch of fish.

Pulled in some very nice Trevs and again got monstered by another ripper trev that dusted me on 14lb- I was spewing!

We continued to fish the same spot for lots of just under pinkies and some legal Breambo's and a solo 40cm chopper taylor.

Fantastic weather and even better company- I finally blodded the deck of my boat and also my new Okuma Flame F30 on my new Rovex Karobite 3-6kg stick.

here's a few piccies of your catch and the 2 smallest fish of the day- a 15cm bream and a 14cm pinkie and one piccie of me'n'greg beside my pride and joy "it's all good"- brooker V14 runabout.

    Tight lines to all

  9. Ive had yakkas last full 10/12 hour sessions as long as you change the water every few hours they will survive OK, they are very hardy little suckers- wheras taylor and other baitfish will perish in a few hours unless you got constant fresh water going into the bucket- poddy's last a while again same thing- as long as you change the water regularly.

Take a small butterfly net and a spare bucket to change the water into thats the best thing you can do- try and avoid man-handling the yakkas they go into stress (you will notice a badly stressed one will have dark stripes going vertically down its back) they wil be the first to die off- if you get any that die remove them from the tank/bucket immediately and slab it up and use as a cut bait to avoind further stress to the rest of the livies as it seems to be contagious- once a fish dies the others will go into stress mode aswell and if you dont remove them they will all die off quickly and suddenly.

    Good luck mate

  10. Mate you should be able to scale the piccies in Microsoft Paint (provided you use a Windows based PC) if you use a Mac then use iPhoto.

    To do this-

right click image-> Open With-> Paint

Go to Image menu-> Select "stretch/Skew"

Go to 50% first for both axis and you should be able to upload fine- thats how I do it never had problems (and I work also in IT)

You can continue to scale but remember to save it as a different file name so you keep the opriginal format and sizing.

saves you downloading another app from internet to do this as its very basic and easier through Paint

    Hope this helps

  11. Mate if you cannot get fresh squid then you can always buy a box of California Squid- available @ most good tackle suppliers- thjey're fresh and easy to get a hold of... and most fish LOVE them :1fishing1:

Ultimately the BEST bait for Jew is fresh caught Squid but they also like live poddy's and mullet strips- now with the Mullet about to run for spawning you will likely find they are hungry for Mullet I'd personally be taking both to any proospective Jew spot coz you never know what they will take.

Learning to catch your own bait like squid, yakkas, mullet is just as rewarding as putting them out for the monsters of the deep- IMHO you should learn to catch your own ultra fresh bait as it will save you a packet on bought bait and you will always have fresh available- nothing beats your own caught bait and nothing will ever come close to it IMHO

  13. The gutters are usually where the surfers are

Surfers will only tell you where the shallow water is and where the rips are- as surfers use the rips to get out to the banks faster with less effort- on the lee side of the rip you will likely find the channels and gutters.

DOnt be afraid to walk along with your line in the wash as this can be very productive- esp for Salmon/taylor and jewies which move in and outr of the gutters frequently

Spizza, PRED-ATOR and Jewhunter are ALL on the $ - be observant and also dont fish near surfers its just not cool

  14. HI David, Patternosted rigs are good for most surf beaches. I tie mine myself using 30lb mono or flouro and have 2 droppers of around 20cm long, with about half a metre between each dropper (usually more though). Your sinker should be same distance from first dropper as from first dropper to second dropper. On the top one I run a single 3/0 mustad and bottom I use a single 4/0 mustad hook. I use snapper leads I dont like the way star sinkers dig into the sand too much. Also remember that moving with your gear as it drifts along the gutter is a great way to discover the fish rather than having to berley up and wait for them to come to you.

If I choose to berley I use offcuts from striped tuna or slimey mackeral or yakkas and thron in the frames and heads etc that I dont keep for beach worming- mix in with a loaf of bread and throw handfuls in upcurrent of your chosen fishing location- lets face it if you berley @ your feet it will drift away- taking the fish it attracts with it.

If I am using whole pillies on ganged hooks run your sinker straight down to the hooks, dont bother tying a swivel on, they are best used for minimal surf conditions unlesss you want to keep the bait right on the bottom and let it drift with current.

    Good luck mate

  15. Hiya everyone, I just bought my first tinnie (a Brooker V14 with 40HP) and I am looking for anyone to come join me on brisbane Waters/hawkesbury/Lake Macquarie on weekend and midweek outings.

As I work different shifts each week, days and times may vary a bit but I usually get Sat/Sunday mornings to myself if I work nights and then get Monday/Tuesdays off...

Idea is to flick plastics/LCB's and HB's/Poppers around the drop-offs and oyster racks for bream/flatties/jewies and on the odd good day head out to the heads and troll for bonnies and kingies on light gear

Sorry I wont allow any bait in my boat Im going strictly lures ONLY as I dont have bait board installed and I dont want my boat stinking nor the cleaning dutues afterwards... simply put you gotta be prepared to help launch/retreive and wash boat afterwards (usually do this @ the ramp when there is fresh water available) and must be able to reverse a trailer or at least hold on to some rope and guide boat to T-wharf or pontoon without damaging my "pride and joy"

You will need your own gear and be preapred to meet @ any ramp on the central coast or hawkesbury before sunrise for a sunrise launch.

Prefer someone with local knowledge as its been donkeys since I fished inside Brissy Waters but I have basic idea on locations and will have GPS/Sounder installed in a couple of weeks once I receive delivery from USA.

Must be self sufficient and I prefer c'n'r other than keeping the odd jew/flattie- I return all my Bream and other species back to briney these days there are better feeds for me n my family.

Please let me know via PM with your contact details and I will contact you when I am available... like I said I do shift work so my hours change every week depending on workloads.

    Cheers and Tight Lines

    Anthony

    :)
