  3. finished uni n decided to have a flick for squid. was afternoon and hadnt been catching any at night the days before so wasnt expecting much. 30 mins in i see a huge cuttle follow up my tiny 2.5 jig.... oh no.... kept taking pics of it while it was in the water cos i thought i had no chance trying to get it up on the rocks with no net and only 4lb line.... manged to wedge it inbetween sum rocks and got it over.... tried to let it go but my jig was all bent and stuck in it and it took me 10 minutes or so to get it out so i felt i had no choice but to keep it. 1st cast after i hooked what i thought was another large cuttle by the way it was fighting.... turned out to be a yummy squid....large one too... yay! need sum help dudes... deciding what to do.. definitely gonna keep some for a jewfish sess on the weekend but as these r so large mayb evn the tentacles n guts wud do. wats the deal with eating/cooking cuttlefish? is preparation the same as a squid? definitely having salt n pepper calamari tho... also saw a rather large blue groper follow up the cuttlefish i was bringing in... i know its gonna b in the same place tomoro and iknow wat it wud definitely eat... wats the rules with catching them/their table quality? cheers stefan
  4. so i finished uni today and had an hour up my sleeve so i decided to go to the local rocks to see if the blackfish were firing as i had time to go for them this year at all. last year it got to be about 30ish fish per trip however today there were none to be seen. My initial aim was not to get wet however that idea immediately went down the drain when there was no accessible weed so i had wet shoes for the rest of the session . anyways spent about 10 minutes each at a couple of spots with no hits and was about to call it quits when i saw one last place which looked fishy (pardon the pun) so i decided to give it a cast. To any fisherman/non-fisherman there i would have looked like an absolute idiot as this spot would have been just rocks at low tide and was 0.5m deep at most where there was a little rockpool at high tide (the pic below doesnt give it justice). i saw the water funnel into a certain area and after a few casts i finally nailed the perfect drift over a small rockpool and bang! the float goes down. That was the moment it all came down to. You either pull and it pulls back or u pull and realise your snagged. I pulled.... and it pulled back! i admit the fight wasn't very difficult despite the rocky conditions as i was using 20lb mono (i hate losing gear). Still, the satisfaction i got from this catch was like no other...certainly more fun than catching 30 blackfish in easy conditions...rather than a feed i went today for the challenge of catching a fish and boy was today a challenge but i passed it. turns out the guy that looked like an idiot caught a fish! in a rockpool!
  5. octopus r good bait but only for predatory species in my experience as it is very tough and usually only gets taken if the bait can be swallowed in 1 bite...ie sharks i believe u can eat most kinds of octopus(octopi?) in the sydney harbour area cept for the blue ringed which you should not even touch... however i remember reading in the fisheries booklet that taking octopus from sydney HARBOUR is illegal. cheerio

    Squid

congrats on the huge numbers... i dont get as many from the boat as i do from sure.. dunno why.. btw totally agree with the post above.. his advice so so spot on... all i can add is that the expensive jigs almost always do the damage.. and if ur moving between spots which r in visual distnace it helps 2 leave a rod out with either a jig or pilchard on a float at one spot so u kno wen they r there... cos if ur moving and the squid r moving sumtimes the positions just dont coincide if u get wat i mean..
  7. went tonight... larger size in avg... especially the two big calamari which r gonna b yummo when i get the time to cook them tomorro... i hope the arrows taste good too ... heard they arent as excellent but still ok... the smaller ones can join my growing stock in the freezer which shall be unleashed on kingfish/jewfish on the weekend. hehehe caught em in the same areas.. cept one of the calamari which was caught at watsons bay... lost quite a few there.. i know the limit is 20 but im starting to feel guilty even keepin 10.. might give some different areas a go.. gonna go for sum blackfish tomoro morning if i can get up...open waters not harbour tho. i tried to put a 20c coin in the background for size reference..the calamari were bout 30cm hood length..
  8. today was a couple of 1sts.... 1st time ive posted a report on squid 1st time ive seen someone get busted off by a large squid ...didnt evn get too see it which was a bit devo 1st time ive caught so many squid and my friend landed none 1st time ive gottten the bag limit on squid (well i thought i did... ended up only having 13 so i cudda kept goin ) 1st time its only been arrows which means i dont really wanna cook them as they arent as big or as tasty as the calamari we've been catching (tho the one that busted my frend off wudda prolly been a calamari) anyways with all these small/mid sized arrows im gonna use them as bait but im unsure if i wanna go chasing kingies..as lately they have really slowed down...im thinking of having a session in the boat under tom ugly's in botany...but i think the moon is near full atm? dunno... any1 got any ideas? btw all squid caught around the rosebay area... dont really wanna waste their freshness....
  9. id like 2 propose a new subforum where members can psot the smallest fish they have caught... thus ppl who regularly catch small stuff can have goals to aim for and we can find out the movements of fish species...ie i personally wonder who has caught the smallest kingfish and how big is it?
  10. hey ive been goin out in the harbour for the last few months and cant seem 2 find the big kings every1 is gettin into. Its usually just a couple of rats which is really annoying. I have nailed the squidding aspect of it and can manage 7-12 in a good session landbased around the south head harbour area but i cant seem 2 find the kingfish. Does every1 just fish the markers and north head? or are there spots in the harbour? i really wanna nail main harbour before i start goin into middle harbour. does west of the harbour bridge go well? the best spot for me atm has been the yello marker off nelson park and the triangular sticks west of that.
  11. congrats on the kings mate. Im plannin to go out tomorro. this may be gettin 2 picky but which side of the bridge were you on?
  12. congrats on the kings mate. which area you fishin? main harbour or middle harbour?
