  1. if its really rough throw out a large bait for a jewy. they love that weather
  2. cheers bloodknot that link helps a tonne. I guess as just outside the heads an epirb isnt needed but I remember reading somewhere about a spare motor tho is it required for larger boats or something or have i completely made it up?
  3. how far out the heads were u?
  4. hey ppl is it true as soon as you leave the heads you legally need an epirb and spare motor?
  5. thanks guys... this is exactly the info i was looking for and such quick replies as well. Its good to know one can still come here in the chat section and be confident in getting a question answered! btw the bomb had the number 40 on it which i presume musta been 40 ounces not 40 grams lol i wasnt thinking. That makes it about 1.1 kg which seems too light compared to the 2-4kg u recommended
  6. hey got one of those downriggers from online shop (~$130) as im never gonna use them much cept looking for kingfish. The downrigger is the same as a normal downrigger with a bomb that weighs 40g and a clip that has a metal latch to which you put your line on and then latch back in (and you can vary the pressure) I tried it out thursday and i had some issues which i think ive narrowed down to 2 problems. 1: i can see the downrigger wire going down at at least 30 degrees from the vertical if not more. Does that mean its not heavy enough or are downrigger wires not meant to go straight down. (of couse some water resistance is expected) Im currently using what i think is a 40g bomb is that too light? Can i make a home made downrigger or wrap a bunch of sinkers together with wire? 2: whenever i reeled in to check the bait i found that my swivel was almost right next to the downrigger clip. The clip that was provided does not clamp on the line but rather acts as a guide (described above) as a result i think the bow in the line down to the clip is creating enough resistance to let the line slide through the guide until the swivel hits the clip. So to solve this i was thinking of either using the rubber band method of attaching line to the clip (to stop sliding) or get a better clip (by either making one with rubber bands and a peg or forking out an extra $30 for a good clip). If there is someone nice enough to read this and give me a reply I'd appreciate it so much. The answer might just be as simple as a yes and yes. Cheers Stefan
  7. hey ur getting these on the lower end and just above the spit bridge right? i was thinking of testing out my new downrigger in the area. i trolled the length of shore from rosebay boatramp to southhead for nothing but it mighta been cos its the 1st time im using a downrigger. if u want squid try lady jane as i was there on thursday 12pm full sunlight, lowish tide and lost 4 at the boat in around 30 mins. Theres also a huge groper there which seemed to have taken up residence there.
  8. how early/how far out were u? i was out at north head around 8am on thursday morning and saw pretty much nothing
  9. those kings awesome! Especially off the rocks. sux ur spot has 2 be so far from sydney ill just have to wait a bit longer till the harbour fires!
  10. haha that clears alot about that mysterious boat ramp i've been hearing about in parsley bay... good work on the flathead! looks a bit thin for an almost 40cm fish tho.. must be dieting
  11. u got the right spot, just be persistent, give plenty of time top quality jigs and meyb even hang a pilchard off a float aswell. its a large area so id say even 2 hours wouldnt be enough time to cover the whole of south head and down. If u do get some squid try the dropoff on the north side of shark island or wherever u sound bait around the pylons. Also try bald head (the east side) --> these r the only 2 places ive read bout. For kings the latest report says theyve been caught around rosebay but id work my way all along the coast up to south head from rosebay aswell. Gd luck! if u catch stuff make sure u post a report and if u know any extra spots id be happy to know. I must warn you that im quite open about spots etc and like to encourage sharing of info
  12. 2 save the poster sum trouble, in general for harbour fishing you wanna use a sinker as light as the current would allow. That means heavier in mid tide and light wen ur at the top or the bottom. If ur near the turn of the tide and have a rather large squid on sometimes you dont even need any weight or maybe just a really small ball sinker. the largest i go is around size 6-7.
  13. this was the report i was waiting for defs gonna head out sometime this week. how early did you get them?
  14. the issue is if ur cleaning fish on the boats and chucking rather large bits of fish overboard i heard its illegal as it counts as littering.
  15. i have landed plenty of flathead, hooked a tailor and skewered small baitfish. Wierd stuff is prolly the vast amount of sea cucumbers and startfish ive caught...seem 2 b letting my jig sink a bit too low
  16. if ur eva back in the vaucluse area a nice (and one of the only) good sp spots imo is the yaht club on the other side of rosebay wharf. Theres a big drop off there and ive nailed all sorts of goodies. Shoot us a pm and ill tell you how 2 work it if ur still interested.
  17. hey did u get the bonnies on metal spinners? what bait u using? im heading up there in a couple of weeks
  18. theres a boat ramp at parsely bay?
  19. any reports on surgeon fish being caught in the harbour? i have a mate who wants to target them this weekend and i wouldnt know where 2 start other than a couple of wharfs that rickster told me about a while ago.
