  1. I just bought some Shimano Sephia Egixile deep Squid Jigs 3.0. I didn't really want them as they are the heavier ones but at $6 a pop couldn't say no. Anyways, It was time to test them. I was working at home last night and finished my work at about 9.30 so I decided for a quick squid sess to test them out. I head to a wharf near me in the inner west. I scouted this wharf a few months ago but it was during the big wet of a few months ago. The water back then was dirty and horrid but I knew this place would hold squid. So I get there the water is clear & I can see the bottom. I chuck the jig out and after a few casts I have 2 squid. Then I move around and spot a school of about 8 of them in about 2 foot of water. I chuck my jig in...bang...2 more. Now that's all I need for my jew session on Sat, so I'm done in 10 min. But I decide I'll catch one more and release it just for fun. The school were timid and not as aggressive any more. They would follow and occasionally touch the jig but not grab it. I tried fast, slow, different depth but no takes. So what do people do in these situations?
  2. Somehow I missed all these post. Well it's been booked I'm staying at 2 resorts on Malolo Island Fiji. http://goo.gl/maps/0dng Unfortunately it seems some places don't allow beach fishing but I'll suss it out when I'm there. Burnsy74: Yeh I looked into that Jacque Cousteau resort....it didn't quite fit the bill with the lady. The fishing sounds great. B Man: Last time i took an ugly stick travel rod 4-6kg, a crappy shimano FX 4000 spooled with 6kg mono. Lure wise I took soft plastics. I took about a dozen and went through them all from bust offs. Now I'm older and wiser this is my set up: Rod 6-8kg Shimano Raider 7 foot travel rod Reel My new Okuma Trio 40s spooked with 15lb power pro ( I bought these 2 items online for sub $100 - stoked). I'll also take my cheap Okuma Vectra as well, for use in the kayak. Lures Small Halco rooster popper. Rapala subwalk Selection of Halco twisties a couple of TT blades A a couple of packs of prerigged SPs

    Cobia?

I found this clip of people fishing in Abu Dhabi. It looks like a Cobia but looks really fat. What do ya reckon??
  4. I've been to that store as my mum and sister live in coffs. I'll check out the site dont think so/
  5. I'm looking to buy a fair few lures. I'm looking at a range of lures from SP's, poppers, blades, slugs etc. What's the best/cheapest place to buy online? Ideally in OZ but if am open to overseas. cheers
  6. While trying to glue it together I noticed that the reason it had come loose. The metal that the eye sits in has cracked all the way through. So is replacing a guide on a graphite rod the same as on a fiberglass one?
  7. I couldn't find much info on reattaching eyes on this site or web. Not sure if i'm using right search terms. Anyways...I have a loose eye on my guide. It wants to pop out. So I was going to use some super glue to fix it in place. Will that do the job?
  8. Well I decided to buy it from the US. I found it for $56 and also bought some 150y of 15lb power pro for 15 bucks too. I know I don't get the life time warranty on the reel but for that price I should have bought 2.
  9. I've been research a new reel for fiji trip. I wanted something under $100, have decent drag and match a 6-10 stick that I can cast all day with. So I came across the Okuma trios 40s. It retails for about $140 here but I found it for about $70-80 in the US. I'm loving the sound of it - 9kgs of drag and weighs only 300gms. As a bonus the 40s...the "S" means high speed retrieve. Anyone had any experience with them? Specs: Gear Ratio 6.2:1 Bearings 9BB , 1 RB Drag Max (lbs) 18.0 Line Capacity ( LB / Yards ) 200/6, 160/8, 110/10 Line Per Handle Turn 31" Model Number Trio-30S Weight (grams) 295
  10. Right... I'm looking at getting a 6-10kg SHIMANO RAIDER II SERIES MF TRAVEL INSHORE SNAPPER SPIN HEAVY 703 ROD for a trip to Fiji to hopefully catch some small trevally and queenfish etc. I'll be mainly shore based but want to use it on a boat as well. Hence not going for the 9 foot version. Will this be ok? On another point I'm intrigued to get an understanding of the different power categories of rods...and where the above mentioned fits in. I'd place it as as a medium. So is there a system for Australia waters to atribute a line class to the below categories? UL - Ultra-Light L - Light ML - Med/Light M - Medium MH - Medium Heavy H - Heavy XH - Extra Heavy UH - Ultra Heavy
  11. Hey all, Thanks for the kind words. I just reread my post...I sound like i'm a eager teenager when in fact I'm a 36 year old. I guess you're never too old for firsts.
  12. Well you have the persistence thing down pat. I've tried a probably about 7 different locations around syd...So it can't hurt to mix it up. My only advice is try and catch squid. I've seen a couple of 120+ kingies swim up to a livie under my float only rebuff it. It was a mere morsel for these beast but the didn't want it. If it was a squid I doubt they would have rejected it but on the other hand my 20lb line would have stood a chance. Actually I have a few more words of advice as now I'm a complete expert I've known this for a while but circumstance and habits stopped me...If you want a better chance of catching one you probably hit a ocean ledge. There are a few around syd but my mates aren't crazy enough to get up at 4 am with me.
  13. Yep I measured him. Bang on 80cm. Which makes him about 6.5kg.
  14. Well I've finally got my legal kingie. It's taken 2 years of early mornings, a few bust offs and a whole lot of by catch but I've done it. So for all you landbased guys...put the time in and it will come. I feel I have been doing everything right for so long and that little bit of luck just never went my way. I guess I'm pretty lucky in other parts of my life instead. Any ways here's my report. So it's my usual Sunday morning. I get up at 4am and pack the car to hit my old faithful wharf in the east. It was bitterly cold this morning but I check the water temp and it's 22º so I was feeling optimistic about a getting my kingie today. I get to the wharf and burely up...the yakkas were playng hard ball today and only got 5 before the sweep and trevors took over. So I chuck a yakka out on a float and pick up my jig stick and start prospecting for squid. After about 10 min I pull up a small iphone size cuttlefish. There's something about cutlefish that I like and would normally chuck him back but i'm on a mission. So I pull in my yakka and let him go an then double hook the little cuttle and chuck him out. I watch it land then walk about 3 paces to get my squid stick again. I turn to check the float only to see it disappear below the surface. I drop the rod and race over to my arching 9 foot 8kg rod (matched with pfluger salt 50). I grab the screaming rod and set the hook. I felt a lot of weight but not the blistering runs I've had before...those are unstoppable. So I feel i'm in with a chance. The fish had not raced out to the morrings...he was fighting close...plus I wasn't giving him much option as I tightened the drag up. After doing a few laps of the wharf he was tiring. He'd been battling for 5 minutes. I don't carry a net when I fish this place so after a few heart pounding moments I hauled him on to the deck via the 40 pound leader. It was bitterly cold and windy 7am...not a soul around to hi five me. It didn't matter I'd achieved my goal. So I choofed off home and have about 2kgs of fillets in the fridge. On another note my girl has won a day out with ET fishng this Thursday and she's be goading me about how she'll get a kingie before me...oh how wrong she was.
  15. So you can get yakkas at the baths in the morning? What's the best time..pre dawn i assume?
  16. Fin Nor looks good. Only thing is it weighs about 750gms which might seem a bit heavy for the Raider rod.
  17. I'm planning a trip to fiji/Samoa in july and I'm looking to get a rod and reel combo. I plan to do mostly shore/flats fishing with lures with the occasional boat session. I'll be targeting trevally, queenies, small tuna etc I don't want to spen more that $300. So this is the set up I'm thinking. SHIMANO RAIDER II SERIES MF BARRA SPIN 662 ROD 2 piece 5-10kg ($120) http://www.anglerswarehouse.com.au/product_detail.asp?productnospaces=shimano_raider_ii_series_mf_barra_spin_662_rod_3334 Black Gold BG30 or BG60 - 8kg drag ($150) http://www.daiwa.com/reel/detail.aspx?id=47 I already own this but would like expand my collection pfluger Salt 50 http://www.purefishing.com.au/reels/pflueger/spin/salt/ What do you guys think?
  18. So i went out yesterday morning in search of a kingie in the harbour from a landbased location. So headed to my usual spot in the east near vaucluse and got yakkas. I chucked one out while I tried for squid. I noticed my livie float was submerged but not moving...squid me thinks. So I slowly wind it in to see a nice large specimen . This is the same one that seems to be terrorising my livies each seshing. So the squid drops my de-brianed livie and skulks off to the depth, while I grab my jig rod and cast beyond where he was. A quick wind and a few jerks and I'm on...only problem is he's stripping line off my rod. I reckon I had about about 3 kg drag on. Anyways I got him up with out a net which was very nerve racking as I had to swing him up on to dry land. So he was to big to chuck out whole so he became my dinner....yum. No kingines, salmon or bonnies...very quiet out there. The water seems very cold.
  19. Awesome. What gear were you using?
  20. We I guess we have this months winner for COTM...top work

    fish

Dept of Fisheries advises against it... "No fish or crustaceans caught west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge should be eaten. You should release your catch. For fish caught east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge generally no more than 150 grams per month should be consumed." Full details here http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/info/sydney-closure"
  22. I have posted 2 similar post as I thought I didn't press the submit button at work...how do I delete a post? Hi Radiers, I need some help. I'm planing a holiday somewhere in south pacific islands (Fiji, Samoa, tonga etc) with my girlfriend and want some advice on destinations. What I want to do is landbased fishing for small GT's queenfish etc. or the beach/rocks but the catch is it needs to be right where a 4-5 star resort will be. Last time i went I stayed at the Intercontinental Golf resort in Fiji...This place was great as it had access to deep water via a large natural harbour. See image. This gave me access to Trevally, mackerel and other assorted fish that I never got close enough to sight before they bust me off. I will prob go out on a boat once or twice but I do enjoy a bit of prospecting with lures in the morning before breakfast. So anyone know of destinations that is close to what I want? cheers
  23. Hi All, Anyone know of any decent Pacific island destinations where I can fish landbased for small GTs, Queenies etc. I just want to chuck around some lure and have fun....nothing to serious. Ideally it needs to be near 4-5 star resort/accom. Last time i went to fiji at the intercontinental Golf resort I had access to deep water via a big harbour. See image. I caught a few trevally, lost a mackrel and a few other unkwons. So any ideas?
