  1. Last few weeks i've been in plenty of situations when the water has been bubbling like crazy with bonito, taylor or salmon but havent been able to extract any kings from the depths despite them defiantly being there ranting2.gif I usually just end up flicking slices around and catching whats on the surface (still having lots of fun thou)

Besides downrigging, what are some other methods to catch the kings down low.

    Thanks for the help everyone

  2. Hey raiders am only relatively new to lure fishing and as I've just got myself a 14ft tinny in which I can troll I was wanting any tips on the best ways to troll and or places to troll in the harbor or pittwater. Will primarily be chasing bonnito salmon and rat kings on light gear. Just picked up a couple of the smaller x raps diving around 6 ft. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome! troll around the corner of north head. Ive caught bonnito, and rats on that spot on light gear which is mad fun. Trolling your x - raps around there will be perfect.

  3. Really wanna get out this weekend, havent gotten out for about a month nowranting2.gif Are the kings working the harbour or has the weather turned them off? If so is there anything else i could go for thats working in the harbour? Also need to try out the downrigger!

    Cheers...

  4. Hey mate, i manage to catch them trolling little 4" pelagics, they seem to do the trick quite nicely. They end up being around 40 - 45cm. Last time i was out they even took my laser pro 160! that was pretty funny, hooked him absolutely everywhere.

    Hope this helps...

  5. So went to play around with the saragosa 14000f and the inevitable happend.

Wow the saragosa is a nice reel!!! Very balanced set up with 80lbs fins braid.

No kings should be getting away from me now!

Thanks for everyones help, made my decision a lot eisier.

Now lets the hope you kings aren't as nice when im hookedbiggrin2.gif

    Jono.

  6. Ultimately i want to buy a t-curve for it at a later stage but at the moment im just buying the reel and i think for my needs a 10 - 15kg 6"6 rod would be awesome for the 1m kingy's, being able to cast poppers, jig and live bait, very versatile. Do you find on the nitro the reel is a bit big for the rod or does it go nicely.

Btw what do you go for on the 62lbs set up?

    Thanks

  7. the slower jigging ratio the better in my eyes

the saragosa is a pimped version of the spheros and is a far better reel

i jigged with a saragosa 18000 for a while and found it a great jigging reel the gearing is perfect

i no Dogtooth (john) has caught alot of kings on his gosas

they have no issues with 1mtr kings

Thanks for the help everyone, ill go play around with one on the weekend, sounds like its exactly what i need.

  8. FYI the Saltist Spin has 15kg of drag. The larger models of the saragosa have more drag.

I was thinking of buying the saltist spin but after having a go with one, I found the gear ratio to be way too high for my liking.

Of course its up to your personal preference but i know some guys jigging with saragosa's that do very well!

On the daiwa website the saltist spin has 22kg of drag for the smallest one, and goes up to 33kg of drag for the 5000 - 6500. I thought it sounded to good to be true :(

How does the saragossa compare to the spheros and for that matter the saltist?

Im sure the saragossa is probably a better reel at the end of the day ( i dont mind spending the extra $50) im just a little worried about the 4.7 ratio for jiggin .

As long as it will pull me in a 1m + kingy i will be extatic! thumbup.gif

    Thanks!

  9. I would suggest the 6500 but for about $50 more you can pick up a Shimano Saragosa 14000 probably a better reel if you are tackling Kings in the island of the long lost cloud.

I like the idea of having a 6.2 - 1 ratio. Especially for jigging and the 6500 has a fair bit more drag then the saragosa.

  10. I wanna play with the big kings this season! Been looking at the saltist spin and really like what i see, but just not sure what size to get. I would be using it for everything, live baiting, casting poppers, jigging.... Which size would suit my needs? Hopefully also gonna be taking it to n.z if im lucky enough yahoo.gif

    Thanks everyone.

  11. Can i just use a loop to loop connection tying leader on? I just put a surgeons loop on my 12lbs leader to the welded loop in the main line.

Also how much leader should i use?

Hopefully i can start fly fishing soon, just need to learn how to cast, i have absolutely no idea!!!!

    Thanks

  12. Whats the thoughts on re-circulating and oxygenating water? Do the liveies last or do they need the fresh water from the ocean? Im thinking of just putting a bilge pump inside an esky to oxygenate the water which saves me the need to run the 20mm tubing all around the boat.

Thanks for the help, ive been trying to sort this problem out for a while now.

  13. well done on the kings did u get any photo's of the 70cm models? was a great day out 2day

Yeah i just realized that was the smaller one i think around 65cm... I dont have a great pick of the bigger one but ill post anyway.

Thanks mike! biggrin2.gif in two weeks were gonna be big into them!!!thumbup.gif

  14. What a great morning...good fishing, good weather PERFECT!!

Started off bait collecting, on the water by six, went out get squid, not luck as usual. Went to get yakkas, plenty off em. Riged up the livies, set em down and for 2 hours nothing. Thought i would try my luck with the bonnies (hoping for some kingie) trolled little minnows on the two stradic 2500's. Trolled for about 15min and zzzzzzzzzz my dad was on, i went to go pull my rod in and ZZZZZZZZZZZZ i was on! 5min later dad pulled in a respetable 65cm kingie, me! I was still going with my king very green...absolutley screaming off every time he saw the boat, not to mention a 90 degree rod! 15min later, i bring him in, just as the treble snaps of the lure, a very fat 70cm kingie that put up a hell of a fight! Definalty not a massive kingie (although he did go like one) but on my light gear i couldn't be happier!!!

Trolling home picking up a few bonnies........

Couldn't ask for a better day!

  15. Probably knot...sorry forgot to say you should maybe go for the bigger version :) but i didn't realise what they cost until i checked now 1yikes.gif For that price i would defiantly have a look at the the stradic thumbup.gif the 6000 has 13kg of drag and for what you get is a great price.

  16. My not maybe a Baitrunner? Very smooth and nice to use, ive got the 3500b which im using for kings this season. Also if you ever wanted to its an awesome reel for the downrigger. Or maybe as others have suggested the stradic, ive got a 2500 and it pumps out 7kg of drag and far out its a beautiful reel to use!!

  17. Hahah sounds awesome. I tried with just a metal slug the other day and couldn't get anything, i was the only one out there and there were crazy amounts of salmon but nothing wanted to take my slug. Today i was on 10lbs braid, and 12lbs leader and drag was pretty much full and the salmon was still taking line, 73cm would of been unstoppable thumbup.gif

I was so so scared of them jumping and trying to spit the hook, i just wanted to land it. I had already been wrapped around the anchor by a nice tailor ranting2.gif
