Great fish there Poddy Trapper and good on you for getting out in the weather. I decided to give this weekend a miss due to the amount of fresh in the system. I was also planning to fish the oyster leases in WB. Seeing those bream makes me regret that decision. Love the boat too, I bet it is nice and quiet on the water when throwing SPs and surface lures about.
Cheers Paul

I'm going to throw some blades in my cichlid fish tank.... slow lifts or a steady roll you think?
So depressing stuck at home...
Trung
Hi Trung, I reckon a slow roll with some s factor on the blade would do the business. You might need to use heavy leader though!

Hi raiders,
This weather is crazy, it feels like a northern Australia monsoon season. As it has been over 4 weeks since I last wet a line and I am going a bit stir crazy......I've looked at all the options and thought I may as well launch the boat into the back yard as there is enough run off through the yard and into my drain to house a whole school of Barra
-
can buy it by the sheet and cut your own (what i did) heaps cheaper, $20 for 3 reels worth, also run it wet for extra smoothness (cals drag grease is great just a light coating needed)
il pm you.
only thing to note is it will raise the drag adjusting knob a couple of mm as the carbon washers are slightly thicker than standard but i havent really noticed a down side to this so far.
Thanks Hooked up.

G'day Paul,
My mate Dene has an annual trip each year chasing the Barra. He uses his Daiwa Sol 3000 and has nothing but praise for the reel. I have some of the reels you mention (Sol, Ci4, and Stradic FJ) and would probably rate them in the order I have written them. Good luck with your purchase mate. I think you'll be happy with any one of the reels you have listed.
Cheers
Ian
Ian, thanks for the advice. I will have a closer look at the Daiwa Sol 3000.
i have sol 3000 i put some carbontex drag washers in it and use it as my light kingfish reel for stickbaits etc,
great reels, awesome with the drag upgrade smooth as to about 6kg on scales,
should be great for barra id think,
havent tried the other reels mate so cant comment on them.
oh its about 3 years old now and still going strong after plenty of drag burning action.
i think youll like it.
Thanks Hooked Up great advice.....where did you get the carbontex drag washers for the Sol?
3000 SOL out of the reels you listed. But my personal preferance would be for a new 3000 Caldia, they are a bit more expensive but alot more reel.
Thanks Dan, I had a quick look at the Caldia but it was outside of my price range.

Hi Raiders,
My Shimano Symetre died during my last Barra trip in January so I am looking for a replacement. I am looking at spending about $250 so I am looking at either the Daiwa TD SOL 3000, Diawa Freams 4000, Shimano Stradic FJ 4000, Shimano Stradic Ci4 ST4000 or the Abu Soron STX60. I currently have a Shimano Stradic Ci4 for my bream gear and I am very impressed with it.
I would appreciate advice from anyone who has owned one of the other reels.
cheers Paul

Slinky, what are better bearings for a Barra spin reel (4000 size): ceramic or stainless steel ball bearings?
-
Thanks mate, it's been a month off the water, and feels great the get back out there. Windy, for us, is a tough nut to crack. We've been there a number of times and never really had a hot session. We assummed that if in Oct/Nov the yellas are in the shallows then maybe in Feb they've gone deep, and it's worked, both fish caught sitting on the bottom, in 40-50' of water next to an under water tree.
Thanks mate, they just whack the lure hard, very exciting fish.
Still have my Basstracker mate, and still love it as much as day one, I'd only ever sell it to buy something like GregLs' Contenter, but that's a while off. Do you still have yours?
Thanks mate, it was my PB yellow.
Mick, I stil have my Basstracker and love it. I have dragged it north to the Barra impoundments three times and into the Hunter Bass dams half a dozen times.......certainly has been value for money. I would only sell it for a glass bass boat but that is years away.
Cheers Paul

Great fish Dan, you certainly have had a successful trip to North.............I can see why your North Coast mates will be happy to see you head home for a rest.
-
Thanks that's a top report,I will give a report when we get back.
Hi Milling Around, any luck at Glenbawn? I reckon it might have been a bit wet during your trip, it certainly was wet at Lake St Clair? We had great success fishing the edges and weed walls with Jackals and Spinnerbaits. The surface action was slow but did produce our biggest bass at 41 cm. Unfortunately we didn't have quite the same success during the NSWBASSIN comp! But at least we improved from our previous competition.
would like to get invoved in the bass comps how do i go about registration. mate of mine done last years abt and im thinking about going in that as well? do you go in the cod comps?
Hi ddaniel,
I fish the NSWBASSIN comp and if you google their name you find the details of how to enter. The same group of fellas also run a yella competition. Whilst I am very new to fishing competitions (only fished two comps) I can provide some advice if you PM me.

Hi Trung, what sort of action do those imitation prawn provide or are they like a jerk bait that just requires the angler to provide the action? Have you tried them yet?
Cheers Paul

Great to see someone chasing the bread and butter fish with lures and ticking over the saltwater lure section. It appears the rest of the raiders are out chasing Kingies or in the sweet water (guilty). Now that my boat has been serviced after a long summer chasing Barra and Bass (including over 3000km of towing up to central QLD and back) I hope the weather and water quality continues to improve so I can chase some bream on HB and SPs in the Georges River.
Did you see any Tailor or Bonnie action near the mouth?
Cheers Paul
-
Some quality fish there Ben! Good on you for persisting thought the rain to be rewarded with some cracking green fish.
Cheers Paul
-
You have some excellent local water and great to see some quality wild creek Bass inhabiting them. I would love to have a system like that close to home so that I could regularly fish for one of my favorite species
Cheers Paul

Outstanding report Slinky, it made a very mundane day in the office more exciting........I felt like I was there beside the survivors! With all the rain hammering the southern Barra impoundments again this year I might need to consider a Murray Cod trip for my spring fishing trip instead of chasing Barra.
-
Great yellas there Mick, nice and fat fish. I caught a similar sized yella at Lake St Clair last month on a TN50......love the way they shake their head. I feel for you losing the green fish and the TN50.
PS do you still have your Stessco Basstracker?

Well done Hodgey on your first Jewie by lure. I hope your success from herein is better than mine.......1 x Jewie by lure in 2009 and none since
-
Hi Roberta, not good to hear that your Hip is still causing you problems and precluding you from fishing , although I reckon the Bream and Whiting around Forster are probably somewhat relieved . Hope you get a positive diagnosis soon.
PS - only a true bream nut would throw chips into the water to see if there are any decent fish about whilst at a wedding.

Great trip B/C!!
You sure do have a knack of finding some nice fish on your trips up north.
You're right about this years models being 1mtr fish next season. I reckon we are in for a couple of boom years in the barra dams if "la nina" goes away & the rains return to normal!
That last barra is a great fish mate.
Well done.
Let me know when you're heading up next year & I'll bring the boat up & join you for a few days.
Cheers,
Grant.
Grant, I will let you know the exact dates but it will likely be in the last week of September during Bassboy's Uni break. I am also considering a trip in early Jan 2013.
cheers, Paul

Looks like a fantastic day and well done on the great fish Dean. It would have been all the much better by sharing the day with your old man.
-
Top work mate and a great session at monduran!!!
If i was you i would of been sending bassboy photo updates of how you were going
Cheers
Pete
Pete, don't worry I was texting him regularly and he was really happy to hear that the surface bite was going off whilst he was back at work

Thanks guys
Heres a quick video of how hard it was really raining out there !

mmmmmmmm looks like summer

What a cracking way to finish your holidays well done
Thanks, it was a great way to finish the trip. I was a bit disappointed not to see more larger fish, but with so many fish going over dam spillways last wet season I am not surprised. I reckon next summer should be good as all of the 70 - 80cm fish graduate to metrey class .

Great video Roberta, thanks for persisting. The video really demonstrates the dexterity required to catch and net fish from a kayak. I will have to get myself one of those GoPros for my next Barra trip, especially when I am on a hot bite.
cheers Paul
3RD NAROOMA FLATHEAD CHALLENGE

Well done fellas, an excellent result for non-locals. Assuming that you don't keep the flatties in the live well, how do you record your fish size in the classic? Is it like the Barra comps where you photograph the fish on a comp provided brag Matt?
Cheers Paul
