  1. Have read all the comments, and agree that tailor and small sharks will leave a clean cut.

You may occasionally see a few teeth marks near the cut from the tailor as they will grab a small fish, dead or alive, and shake and bite the fish in their mouth, until happy to shake hard and bite a piece from the fish ( have observed this many times with tailor, especially when they attack a larger fish like a yellowtail), and tailor quite often will bite the tail first, hence the name Tailor.

As Alan (A. Dawg) stated, jewies will quite often swallow fish whole, and I have found teeth marks all over a small fish, but not too many bite marks that almost sever a fish in two, when hooking up a jewie.

Also consider what may be usual for a particular species of fish, and you will find that there will be one or 2 that act differently from the rest of that species.

As for a crushed bait fish with a big run but no hook up, can also consider a bull ray, or eagle ray, that has grabbed a livie swimming right near the bottom. Not saying that this is what is responsible, but have had these things grab a bait and speed off like a rocket, only to not hook up. Especially so when fishing fish heads or dead fish on the bottom as crab bait, get a big run, no hook up and the bait is crushed.

    Hi Yowie,

    Cheers for that mate.

Rays are always a possibility while live baiting but i've caught my fair share and never got violent headshakes and runs directly towards pylons from them. I know just how fast some of these rays can peel line but i can say for sure rays aren't the culprit here...

Another thing to consider is rays don't have teeth and the crushed yakka in the pic has teeth marks and severe cuts all over it.

    Cheers, Tom

  2. Hi Raiders,

The Bream have been really slow of late but finally managed to get amongst a few.The Perch have certainly kept me busy lately at least... There's plenty of good fish around but as the water cools so is the fishing ... Don't know how i'll go through winter without any topwater action.. Might have to get into the salmon and bigger tailor to keep the obsession healthy...

Had a few good sessions on the perch recently. Mainly smaller guys around 25-30cm with a few mid 30's in the mix. They're good fun on light gear/ No match for a bream in terms of fight but a worthwhile target none the less. The Z-man Grubz in motor oil, bloodworm and watermelon red matched with 1/12 and 1/16 jigheads have been the go... Fish them just like for bream and you'll get the perch. Been busted off by what I have no doubt were bigger 40+ perch as they tend to enjoy holding in very tight country.. Not friendly areas for 4lb leader. A few average bream always find their way onto the end of the grubz as by-catch!

The bream have bee tough but it's always fun exploring skinny water getting a few on topwater. Once again Bassday Sugapens and Strada Virals have done the damage on a bunch of nice bream to 33cm. They go very nicely in skinny water on 1-2kg gear! Some unstoppables have been lost in around the moored boats and marinas which were no match for 4lb leader. Sometimes 4lb is whats required to get the bite in the first place so really tough to land these fish! Always a few flatties popping their heads up while breaming... Mostly small tackers in the 40's with the odd fish pushing 60cm.

Jewfish are taking up the majority of my time over the next month so stay tuned... Hopefully there'll be something to report

  3. Hey Tom,

100% Big Tailor with the clean cut, Happens all the time when using Yakkas and where youre fishing nothing else would be doing that to a Yakka of that size.

The Crushed Yakka is definitely a Soapy/School Jew and thats a common bite mark for Middle harbour and using Livies that size.

Over summer I was lucky enough to witness a school of Jews ball up a massive School of 30cm+ Bull Mullet up in the Middle Harbour area, It was an awesome sight just on first light! The Mullet were busting up everywhere trying to escape and there were hundres of them. Got a small Jew of 65 cm's on Plastics just after witnessing this which confirmed the shadows hunting the Mullet were Jew.

    That's awesome mate!

No shortage of mullet in MH that's for sure... Would have been crazy getting the 65 from underneath them

I've had plenty of crushed yakkas with the classic pin marks that schoolies leave..

It's leading up to the time i got my 97 jew up here last year... I'll keep persisting and hopefully join the meter club!

I have caught a few few jewwies on live yakkas and a lot of the time end up with my bait back. You will notice the yakkas usually look very pale and scaled. There were about 5 cases of the yakkas coming back scaled pale and with very small teeth marks along its body. All it looks like is little pin holes along its body. From what I have learnt Jews only use there teeth to get a hold of their prey if needed. They roll their prey in there mouth spit it out and then come for a second time for the finishing off shot. All jewwies that I hav gutted caught on yakkas have had whole yakkas in them not chewed up yakkas. I have caught small sharks and tailor which explAin the clean cut and also pj's / crabs which explain the crushed yakka. I caught 2 Jews last night they've already been cleaned but my next few fish hopefully on the weekend I'll try get a few pics for you Alan

I agree about a big tailor or small bull for the clean cut not the sort of areas pj's ShoW up... Been fishing it for years and years never caught one let alone heard of one from here... Further into middle harbour would be a definite possibility... Crabs don't take line either... The crushed yakka i hooked up and experienced a very nice run (remember i'm running 50lb braid, 60lb leader and heavy gear) before pulling hooks. No PJ can go that hard... Would have got me on the pylons if i didn't pull hooks..

  4. Been fishing up here for years and never come across a PJ, they don't tend to take line likesome of these have. Lots of Jew in the area and I'm pretty convinced the crushed yakka is one.

I guess I'll have to catch it to find out what it is.

    Cheers, Tom

  5. Could be a number of things depending on the photo, the one that's a clean cut I'd say shark or tailor, the one that looks a bit mangled, possibly a port Jackson, and the rest I'd say cuttlefish...

    Fishingphase

Not many cuttlies up the back of MH. Never got a PJ up there either.. On the mangled yakka pic (not the clean half one) i got a good run...

  6. Over the last few months I've been live baiting for Jewish every now and then in middle harbour. Livies bring yakkas and tailor are often coming back in mangled.

Some have been picked and some smashed... And some big runs to go with many of these hits.

What does everyone think these are? I know it's not one culprit based on a big hit and run and other times it's picked to pieces. Keep in mind the tailor and yakkas are Big around 30cm mark... Location is upper middle harbour.

  7. Super PE gets wind knots more than any other braid i've come across... particularly 8lb and under... Spooled up my caldia the other day with 6lb and first session 4 wind knots costing me 30m of braid overall...

Apart from wind knots its awesome stuff..

    Cheers, Tom

  8. No fishing for me this easter.

But next week, two weeks fishing in Weipa on the house boat might be fair compensation.

Will have two other raiders up there with me. Anyone else going to be up that way.

    Bruce

    You've got me jealous mate!

Been up there a couple of times. Insane is how i'd describe it.

Going up next April with a few mates which should be good.

Let us know how you go.

    Cheers, Tom

  9. Hey guys,

An odd question, but does anyone have a mangrove jack for sale? Or know where i could get my hands on one? They seem very hard to come by... The fish i'm talking about, not the boats.

PM me if you can help me out.

    Cheers, Tom

  10. Nice work Tom great little report there! Love the big bass the most :)

However to both you an poddy, stop terrorizing my brain with thought of the winter surface lure hiatus! Hahaha, I don't know what you both are talking about though I am still getting good bass on surface lures (soft shells and sigletts for those wanting to know) and chubbies so until that stops I won't believe your lies!

Don't know how i'll survive without it over winter... To make matters worse, stumbled across some awesome new big whiting flats the other day... Will have to capitalise in the next few weeks before they go quiet

And Ian, generally the cooler water shuts the fish down a bit. It slows their metabolism right down. You can still get the odd fish on surface but no where near as productive as the warmer months.

    Cheers, Tom

  11. Cracking bass there MM! And Great looking water your fishing in too. I hate the winter no surface popping stretch, it does my head in.....also love my sugar pens, great all round surface lure for bream, bass and whiting.....if there is a big flatty in the area too they will give it crack, but you might need to change your undies after the explosive surface strike.

Funny you say that, had a 90+ flatty have a crack at the sugapen in knee deep water over my local whiting flats. When i went over to investigate it looked like shovel nose! Would never have landed her or 1-2kg gear and 4lb anyway i guess...

    Cheers, Tom

  12. Great report, would you say the z-mans are generally good on bass?

For sure! The grubz in particular but the minnowz can get the better fish like this 43. You can attach the grubz and minnowz to a jig spinner to great effect! Over summer tiemco soft shell cicada's and Megabass sigletts are the go for surface bass.

  13. Cheers Guys,

Deanfish - Yeah no worries mate i'll let you in on it. But you can't get your boat up there.. Need a yak.

nbdshroom- I'd say they were mullet mate. They're everywhere at the moment! Big fish too... Not farmiliar with Salt Pan but sounds like a few good bream there... You'll smash them on the grubz for sure!

Got a few more perch and bream today. No big bream for the Pirtek

    Cheers, Tom

  14. Haven't posted a report in a month or so. The fishing has been slow for me on the bream front in particular, but still managed some good fish. Plenty of Topwater action too!

My local has been fishing unusually slowly for the last few weeks unfortunately. Had to relocate to the Hawkesbury a few times resulting in a few good fish. Topwater was the go for Bream with half a dozen nice low 30's fish falling to the ever faithful Bassday Sugapen! Making the most of the topwater bite before winter sets in. A few nice flatties getting around too. Nothing much over 60cm but always good fun. No shortage of small EP's around too.. Managed my PB wild bass also. Came in at 43cm on the Z-man 3" Minnowz in "Bad Shad". The grubz has been doing the job on a few nice whiting too.

Just a quick one today, but good luck to all in the Pirtek Fishing Challenge tomorrow!

  15. Hi Ian,

I started off working them slowly while I was getting a feel for them. Now I use a double flick retrieve with a max 5 second pause. I find they often get hot on the drop so keep an eye on your line while it sinks. 1/18 is ok but I've tried all weights and I've settled on 1/12 TT tournament series jig heads for them. This is ideSl for me. Land based would e good with this too. The grubz are also great on flatties do fish them on a 1/8 for flatties.

    Cheers, Ton

  16. Ian,

To be honest, I'm not sure why watermelon red is so effective. Everything eats them! Bream in particular. Bloodworm and motor oil are also great colours. If your having trouble converting hits into fish, slow down your retrieve a little. This should help a but. Fish them on 1/12 jig heads with size 1 or 2 hook.

Keep at them because they are rapidly becoming one of the best bream plastics around!

    Cheers, Tom

  17. Watemelon Red #1 colour... Pulled jew, big bream, big flatties, perch and just about anything else that swims on that plastic! Bloodworm and motor oil are gun too...Pretty much the only plastics i use these days Z-man! The 1/8 TT Switchy (Switchblade) is a weapon on bream and flatties! Try out the TT ghostblades as well...

    Cheers, Tom
