  1. Hi all I'm pretty new to kayak fishing and wondering if there were any kayak fishers here. I'm keen to learn with other enthusiastic newbies to bounce ideas and share experiences or gain tips from any experienced veterans. About myself, I'm a 32 year old male in Sydney and own a Hobie Pro Angler 12 that gets transported on the roof of my car. I'm keen to get as much fishing done this summer and will fish/paddle anywhere in Sydney Harbour, Narrabeen, Hawkesbury, Botany and Port Hacking on the weekends. I'd like to go offshore eventually one day but not until I'm comfortable and ready. If anyone is interested, please send me a PM. Thanks Paul
  2. Great work mate! What bait did you guys use?
  3. Good work mate! I was out there on Monday (Caravan side) without a single bite using the same soft plastics as you did. Had more luck today at Yarra Bay catching 4 flatties though Will be heading out to Narrabeen Lakes again on Friday or Saturday .. this time testing from a kayak. Hopefully more luck this time around Cheers Paul
  4. Hi guys I was taught how to catch beach worms at Narabeen not too long ago by one of the locals and although I didn't do so well.. I was advised to keep at it before I'd have more regular success.. Since the weather's been good lately and the closest beach to me is Maroubra, I was wondering if anyone knew if there are beach worms at Maroubra Beach or any nearby beaches? Thanks Paul
  5. Thanks Pete It is a 7'2" two piece graphite Shimano Starlo Stix. I doubt it would be covered under warranty as I dropped it but I'm glad I'd be able to get the top half from Shimano Its the lightest rod I've ever owned and I use it for SPs too. My girfriend bought it for my birthday & I really like it so definitely glad something can be done Cheers Paul
  6. I was out at Narrabeen on Saturday 24/02/07 using live beach worms. Was targetting whiting as well but only managed one at 20 cm and threw him back. Caught alot of juvenile bream & trumpeter, which went back straight back in except for a few unlucky ones that couldn't avoid the loitering pelicans. Was stoked when I landed a keeper bream but was also when a pelican tried to snatch it out of my hands. I freaked out and dropped the rod somehow and the tip broke . Comtemplating whether I continue using my broken rod or setting up another rod in my car.. I chose to continue using my broken rod as I only had a bit of bait left. Next cast landed a 40 cm flatty so it brought a semi smile back to my face. It was pretty quiet after that as I fished out the rest of my bait. All in all was a good day out. I don't know what to do with my rod situation.. ie is it repairable? or do i need to buy a new one. Cheers Paul
  7. Hi all Sorry if this sounds newbish but I'd like to get some info from anyone experienced. Currently I live in an apartment so I don't have space for a boat not even a little dingy but I'm so keen to hit the water since I live relatively close. What I was alternatively looking at was those inflatable boats like these ones: http://www.zodiacmarine.com/uk/ Now my questions are: * Do I need a boat license to operate one of these? * How do I get it in the water? ie boat ramp or just any sand bank? * What conditions/environments are they best suited for? eg estuary, closer to shore etc? * Would they be ok to fish out on? Can anyone recommend a decent model/brand to start out on? * What size motor is required? * Are there any websites which could push me in the right direction? Thanks in advance for your help. Paul
  8. Hi Raiders Got my first SP setup over the weekend thanks to the lovely girlfriend as a belated birthday present. Took in as many tips as I could from the complimentary Berkley DVD the night before and headed out to Cook's River (Bridge near the airport) last night with my girlfriend and her younger brother. The choice of SP was Berkley PowerBait 3" minnow and I was targetting flathead & bream (though any fish would suffice ) . Girlfriend's younger brother was using prawns. There were already a few people when I arrived but nobody near the pylons so I launched my first cast there and after using the flicking motions on the retrieve (as demonstrated in the DVD) I got my first bite and pulled in a 20 cm flathead. After I put him back in the water I launched another cast and got another bite but couldn't manage to hook him properly After about half an hour I hit a snag so had to set everything back up but it was all worth it as the first cast I launched I pulled in another flatty (approx 30cm). I didnt keep it cos I'm not sure if it's safe to eat fish from the Cook's river (anyone know if it is?) Got a few more bites but couldn't manage to hook them though I had a great time nonetheless. My hands didnt smell like prawns by the end of the session which i thought was bloody great! I think I've been converted Hitting Botany tonight, can't wait to get the SPs happening again! Cheers Paul
  9. Awesome catch matey! Congratulations! PB I take it? How long was the fight from when it first took the bait? Cheers Pauly
  10. If I don't have to go to a birthday party on Friday night, I'll be heading down south to 7 Mile Beach and taking another crack at beach fishing (my most unsuccessful form to date) targeting bream. Davy, is your avatar a photo of yourself? I swear you look like my older brother when he was younger! Cheers Paul

    Swansea

Hi guys Just a report from when I went down to Swansea (in front of the RSL) a week ago. Approx time: 5pm - 12:30 am. Quite disappointing compared to the last time I was there but good compared to my normal fishing trips . All in all I caught some juvie snapper, 3 tailor all above legal limit, the biggest being approx 50-60cm (Photo to come) and a fish resembling a barracuda (no idea what it was but the teeth were pretty nasty)about 35 - 40cm. Some guy next to me caught some decent sized bream but was able to cast out further. Bait used varied from SP's (pumpkin seed scent baby minnows), prawns, and pilchards. No luck with the SP's just lots of nibbles. The prawns brought in the juvie snapper, and pilchards the tailor. I say this was disappointing cos the last time I was in Swansea was around March/April last year and the tailor must have been in a feeding frenzy or something. Every single line I'd cast, I'd end up with a catch. Maybe just not the right time for them yet. Hope they come around soon while the weather's still warm Cheers Pauly
  13. I wasn't there but a friend of mine was swept off the rocks a few years ago at Avoca and a friend jumped in. Luckily both were rescued but it was a very scary time for all involved. So when I heard the story on the news the other day I really wasn't surprised. My girlfriend and I have been fishing in alot of different areas lately but I told her Avoca was the one place I would never take her unless we're going purely for the beach and the fish and chips shop . My heart really goes out to the families and although this was a tragic event, it has also provided us with an important lesson. If you're that keen of a fisherman please follow the advice previously posted or just don't risk it. No fish is worth your own life. Cheers Paul
  14. Thanks for the welcome guys Started with prawns and caught the snapper, when we landed the juvie tailor and flathead I'd switched to pilchards. As for the girlfriend into fishing, her parents didn't let her go when she was younger, look at her now, what a rebel? I may even switch locations tonight and save Narrabeen for tomorrow. Don't really have much experience in beach fishing so I'll check out what the other guys are doing when I get out there and see if I can get a few pointers Cheers Paul
  15. Narrabeen tonight for a few hours. Going to check out Rose Bay & Nielsen Park sometime this weekend.
  16. Hi all I'd just like to say thanks to all you guys for making this awesome site what it is. I've been on here for the past week and enjoyed reading all the stories and adviced offered here and decided to post after my first fishing event since being on this site. Last night, I took my girlfriend out to Rushcutter's Bay/Darling Point for a bit of fishing. When we first got there, it was relatively quiet. One guy had landed himself a decent flathead (40cm) and only nibbles from baby fish. About 30 minutes later we had the place to ourselves as everyone left and things were still quiet. About 30 minutes afterwards we had a good spell of bites but only landing juvenile snappers (about 15 all up) and having to throw them back in. It was pretty much dead for the rest of the night (except for the occasional juvie tailor and flathead) and we decided to call it quits after a bit of drizzle and having to get sleep for work the next morning. Anyways we plan on heading up to Rose Bay & Nielsen Park sometime this weekend to try our luck as well as Narrabeen Lakes tonight after work Cheers Paul
