  1. Gee i thought Botany Bay was only a nursery/Rat kinghy ground,,,, you showed me otherwise....good stuff!!!!!!

It was until about a couple of weeks ago, it seems like either the rats have moved on or the rats we've been releasing have been doing well on the stuff we've been feeding them. :biggrin2:

  2. Mr quintrex and friend - well done!!

two nice looking fish you have there... Since I inspired you to go out and with all those handy tips I gave you, technically one of those fish belong to me!!! :P

Lucky you got yourself a bigger net and gaff... Nothing worst than lossing a good fish next to the boat ... Wait... Didn't that happen to you with your Jew of a life time?

Hopefully I'll get my motor serviced by next weekend and I'll see you out there.

    Cheers

    Dhype

ahhahahaha yes it did happen to me, but don't worry I'll get the sucker! sooner or later. :biggrin2:

I plan to head out this weekend as well, PM me if you don't have the engine fixed by then, and if I need a 'deck hand' :biggrin2: you're more than welcome to jump on board.

  3. Well done good way to start on the first King.Your mate will be hooked now trying to catch that 1meter one.

tell ya what Wolfman, he is already asking about the next trip. I was actually planning on heading out again today being the last day before we all head back to work, but the weather seems worse than yesterday. Maybe next weekend. :biggrin2:

  4. Inspired by DHypes SMS on the 91cm king yesterday, I was determined to head out and give it ago and see if I could improve on the 75cm one last week.

Well ended up getting to the water around 10 today due to the weather, but promised a friend that he will catch his first king, so didn't matter how hard it was blowing we were going to at least give it a go. It was howling and the rain was pelting down, and in the back of my head I was thinking of turning the boat around and head home, but I knew my mate would be hugely disappointed so we chugged on.

Headed over to Mollie point and threw in some left over frozen squid caught from the other day (thanks Cuz :biggrin2: ) 30 mins had past and I was apologising to my mate and telling him maybe not today, then his rod is bending so hard that the rod holder has slipped and turned all the way around, by the time he got to it, half the rod was already in the water, rushed quickly to help him get the rod out of the holder and he was on and by the fight, I knew this thing was going to be quite big.

Then my new saltist 4500H matched with saltist rod goes off, I had set the drag quite heavy and line was coming off! I dashed over and it was a double hookup! After about 10 mins I finally had mine in and boy was it a nice solid fish. Rushed over to help my mate get his in, and to our amazement, both fish measured right on 85cm. You couldn't wipe the smile off my mates face for the rest of the day! :biggrin2: his first king ever and it goes 85cm!

  5. With landing any fish with a net should have the net in the water and swim fish into it head first or have a decent gaff on board very frustrating losing good fish that way

thanks for the tip hawkesbass, it was just that my old net was pretty small. I've upsize to a much larger one and I have a gaff on board as well now. That jew ain't going to get away like that ever again! :biggrin2:

  6. Went out last Sat 16th to see if I could land a jew and with all the reports on FR, I had my hopes up. Was supposed to had left the house at 5am, but didn't end up leaving till 11am, wife wasn't feeling too well in the morning. Got to the squid grounds around 12:30PM, and after about an 30 mins, not one squid to show for our efforts, noticed the water was pretty clean with the run in, so swapped the trusty pink for a green, and what do you know, within 5 casts I have 4 squid in the tank. So off we went molli to try our luck on kings, wasn't too optimistic as I haven't read too many reports on them on FR lately. But anyway, we tried and we landed 2 rats, then we tried Watts for some bream, but with wind blowing the other way to the current, this wasn't too much fun and it was getting late. So off we went back to Molli to try for my jew, put the squid down and waited, promised the wife that I'd be back by 7pm which gave me possibly an hour of waiting, so set the baitrunner on and waited.

So here I waited and waited whilst my mate kept on landing bream after bream, which was a little annoying as I could have been doing that too, but my goal of the day was to try and land a jew so I waited :biggrin2: . 15 mins left and the baitrunner still hadn't made a sound. So here I was thinking maybe next time, and then the lovely sound of the baitrunner zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz goes off. Looked at my mate with the biggest grin and picked the rod up, this thing had probably taken about 50m of line before it stopped. Gave it a crank and I got it hooked, after about 3 more decent runs, I finally get colour and my estimate was at least 10kg. Now to try and get the thing in the boat, mate picks up the net, 1st go missed, 2nd go missed, 3rd go missed... I shout at him, hurry the F up!!!! but the jew just kept on splashing around, then tried it the 4th time and the jew gives one more kick and what happens?? it spits the hook!!!! I was cursing like there was no tomorrow! :ranting2: So dissappointed, it's been a couple of years since I've caught a jew and I had one at the boat and it spits the hook.... anyways... guess that's fishing but I am still having nightmares over it, the next day I went to buy a much bigger net.

So went out last Thursday to see if the jew would give me another chance, got to the bay around 10am, and went to get the squid again. First cast, I am on, and this thing's pulling quite hard and I knew it would be a big one, I get it to the surface and it was a monster!!! Now to get my net, and the net I got was a retractable one and it was on the other side of the boat. Thinking what should I do, didn't want to haul it it and risk pulling the hook out, so I left the rod on the side and dashed over to get the net, came back and what happens? squid's gone, :ranting2: So not very happy at all!!! thinking maybe it was still around, gave it another flick and I am on again but I knew it wasn't the same one but it wasn't too bad, well after 2 hours I've landed 12 very decent size squid. 4 blokes who were trying to land yakkas came over and wanted to buy some of the squid off me, and they offered me $20 bucks each, and I was pretty happy selling 5 of them :biggrin2:

Off to molli to try my luck on kings, water wasn't running at all, and not one touch, pulled up anchor and headed over to the drums. Straight away, I am on, but it was probably the smallest king I have ever caught so far in my life, about 30cm, straight back in. Then the baitrunner goes off, and this thing is actually pulling line with drag set to about 7kg. Must be king, after a little while, in comes a 74cm king! pretty happy about that, then landed another one to 66cm, so pretty happy with 2 keepers. Landed another 5 rats all around 60cm which all went back in. Getting late, so back to Molli again for that jew.

But instead of a jew, landed another 6 kings, 2 of them keepers. As I was pulling up one of the kings, 2 guys who were downrigging decided to come over and give me a lesson on what a legal king was and shouted at me 'throw it back in!!' I didn't appreciate this at all, firstly they were about 30m away, and surely their telescopic vision isn't that good to tell the size of a king from that distance, and secondly I KNOW WHAT A LEGAL KING IS!!! anyways this king went right on 65cm and had a very large girth! but for the sake of the old guys, I shouted that it was legal but just for them I put the king back in the drink and told them to piss off! who the hell do these guys think they are?

Anyways, that jew didn't give me a second chance but the kings are still around so was pretty happy about that, and I would say it's 50/50 now catching a legal king whereas it was around 80/20 a couple months back (80 being the rats :biggrin2:

So get out there with some freshly caught squid whilst the kings are still around.

  7. Hi Raiders, been a while since my last post, as reporting on rats, rats and more rats becomes a bit mundane. But had a day off yesterday and decided to hit the bay. Checked out seabreeze on Wednesday night and a nice 5-10 knots for the morning picking up to around 15 in the arvo. Boy was it wrong!, got to the ramp at 6am, and it was blowing at least 20knots SE.

Had a chat to a couple of old folks who were contemplating going home, but I wasn't going to be deterred :biggrin2:

The plan was to try and get some squid and then hit the Kings, and then maybe some bream afterwards. Heading out straight into the wind with about a 1-1.5m swell, felt like I was in an episode of deadliest catch :biggrin2: but again, this was not going to deter me!

Hit Yarra Bay for the squid, knowing that this was going to be a really tough! took a few goes to even get the anchor to hold. 30 mins into it, nothing, when usually I'd have a few in the live well already, then I tried Egimax which was suggested to me from a mate at work and believe it or not, first cast, I get a little nudge, but it doesn't stick, left it there for a couple of seconds, and it hits again, this time it sticks, WOOHOO! :biggrin2: a couple of casts later, I am onto another. After about an hour of squidding with 2 in the well, decided to hit the Kings, it was really eerie at Mollie Point being the only boat there when there is usually at least 100 :biggrin2: . Landed 5 rats and 1 just legal at 66cm, wasn't too bad.

All out of squid, I decided to head for the breams with an arsenal of prawns, chicken, bonnie fillets and pillies. Now where to try, the SE was still blowing pretty hard, so the only option was around Kurnell. Anchored up (a lot easier this time with a lot less wind and swell), and burleyed up. 3 rods out each with a different bait, straight away the bonnie fillet gets hits, nice solid 30cm bream. Then it was on, for about the next 2 hrs, pulled up 5 flatties, all around the 45cm mark. 8 bream (30-42cm), 5 trevally, 4 tarwine, 1 flounder.

On the way back to the ramp, decided to try the old runway for a little, picked up a few under size bream, then the little ugly stick is bent over backwards and line starts to peel off the little Capricorn 1500. First thing that came to mind was possibly a jewie, picked the rod up and it stops, gave it a strike and it's running again. There was no way I was going to have enough line to get this thing in, but with some patience and a lot of luck I start getting some line back. After what seemed like ages, I start to see colour and to my disappointment it was just a ray :ranting2: but also glad that I got to see what it was.

Couldn't fit all the fish on the bait table for a photo so attached is what I could :biggrin2:

  8. hey Trung, great to hear that you landed some. My cousin was out last Tuesday and manged 2 jews! 65 and 80cm, this was around 10:30AM, some ppl have all the luck!!!, he got a few rats, bonnies, bream as well. Well, this tempted me to go last Thursday and the kings are sure getting picky now, they wouldn't touch the yakkas, they were showing up on the sounder but just weren't interested, whereas a couple of weeks ago, they were going for everything, from stinky prawns to pillies. Hopefully they are this we :biggrin2: ekend!

  9. WOW! sounds like a great day you had there...

Good work on all the squid and the kings... now if only the legal kings would make their way to botany bay....

might have to hit the harbour!

    cheer

    dhype

told ya Trung, we all need to give the Bay a miss for one week and try the Harbour for some legals! :biggrin2:

  10. hey there quintrex -

i was also on the water on saturday and the fish were also not playing ball.... at least you got 4 kings... i only managed a tank full of squid!

i tried looking for your boat but there are 101 quintrex's at the molli car park every weekend!

Good luck at the harbour this weekend!... i'll be sticking with botany bay cuz my boat is too small for the harbour!

    cheers

    Trung

I'll swap you the 4 kings (that you can put back in the water) for your tank full of squid :biggrin2: True about the quintrex's that end up in the bay most weekends, maybe I should name it. Actually, I should have taken the fishraider sticker off my old boat and stuck it on my new one, check out the pic (I assume a FR member owned this boat in the past??). Yeah hope to land something decent in the harbour instead of rats.

  11. Hey Trung, same thing here. I was out on sat & the kings didn't want to play either. Only 4 going around the 60cm mark. They were showing up on the sounder but for some reason they just weren't interested. Might give the harbour a go next weekend, chase some bigger kings hehehe. P.S. I was keeping an eye out for the pink noodle on sat hehehe

  12. Just a real quick report.

hit the harbour from my kayak this morning.

Found some kings near Old Mans Hat.

First one was solid and took a livie and head straight down. My 30Lb braid which was tied directly to the swivel failed. Never again will I take a short cut and not use any shock leader.

Second livie down, and this time Im guessing a big squid was interested and managed to steal my yakka.

I landed a fat 80cm king on plastic (as I was out of bait). Whilst bleeding the fish, I managed to lose it overboard with my lip grippers still hanging from his mouth. Very Dissappointed, but I did have a laugh as my mate did the exact same thing last week.

Good to be out on the yak again, so all good. Just need a new set of lip grippers now.

Seems like the Sydney rats have grown a bit bigger, so good news for us all......

    Jeff

Shame about that Jeff, but that's happened to me also. Never will I ever not use a shock leader now. Braid doesn't knot too well to terminal tackle. Good to hear the bigger ones are finally here or maybe it's because we have been feeding the rats for the last couple of months. :biggrin2:

  13. I should be out this weekend also so I'll look out for your boat... Conditions look crap according to seabreeze... Sucks

just checked, sat morning looks pretty good. don't care, been a week since i got out so let it blow a gale, I'll still be out there :biggrin2:

yeah i'll keep an eye out for the pink noodle :biggrin2:

  14. Well done! Still haven't had a chance to head out to the harbour to put ur tips to use yet but hopefully maybe this weekend. So envious that u guys can head out whilst the rest or us are stuck in the office slaving and day dreaming all day about catching kings!!! Hehehe

  15. Did you try any other spots besides Molli?

So has the mother in law started nagging you to take her out fishing again?

It is great to take your family fishing and watch them land fish.

So do we follow the greenboat around, or the boat with Pink noodle at the front or the Quintrex 480? :)

AHHH Pink Noodle = Trung :biggrin2:

well yes, from his last post, I'll definitely keep my eye out for him :biggrin2:
