  1. was out today as well, am glad it wasn't just me that found it tough. spent almost 2 hrs for a couple of squid, toughest it's been for a while.

took them outside and did a few passes but the swell was making it tough. ended up feeding the squid to rats inside the bay. lucky the 1 bream, 1 flatty, 1 trevally and 1 whiting saved the day. went home with at least a feed.

  2. Have to say hooking these kings is one thing but landing them is another. Spend time preparing and test knots and terminal tackle any weaknesses you will get exposed. Even with the risk of injury :)

You mean the risk of injury to your mate! :) hehehehe

  3. well done buddy! wished I had been out there with you guys, definitely be out there next week, see if we can get onto them again.

so what colour jig did the trick today for the squid?

thanks again for the fillet, the sashimi went down real well!!

  4. Awesome report Chewie! Great kings! Bet u thought that massive hookup of slimies was a king in itself :). Just a question though, are u guys sounding out the slimies or just happen to stumble across them? I use to remember getting into them quite easily a couple years back in the bay, they were everywhere! But I haven't got onto one at all this summer (if u can call it that :).

  5. Hey quintrex480,

Tide has a bearing on fishing right out to browns mountain and beyond.

It's known that baitfish will come close to the surface on the top of a high tide.

Marlin fishos know this well. Just ask Ross Hunter...

So if the same applies to baitfish in close, then the kingies will be waiting for them to rise in the water column and make them more huntable ? Visible ? Maybe ?

I'm just drawing conclusions using the facts we have.

Also, the high tide in the morning brings the cleanest clearest water in from the ocean.

Maybe something about the last part of the high tide brings some characteristic in the water that tells the kingies that now is the time to feed ?

It's all speculation be we love to think about it because it spawns ideas in our heads that we just have to try out and this gets US all excited and looking forward to the next trip.....

I would hate to know everything because fishing would be very predictable....

Just on another note of kingie fishing, there was (still is?) a group of commercial fishos on the south coast (Jervis Bay) that spray water onto the surface from pipes all around their boat.

the water jets going into the water excites the kingies.

I was also told they use some sort of acoustic technique to get them around...

    These guys are very successful...

How did they come up with this stuff ?

    Ideas and experimenting....

    Gotta love the thinking fisho...

    Tony

Thanks Tony for the insight, you're always an abundance of knowledge

that part about the spraying the water onto the surface, I guess that will cause some kind of white wash, which I do believe kingies like to hang around, so that would be a top idea. Now to hook my Karcher power spray somehow to my boat hehehehe :074:

And about the acoustic, read somewhere that kingies are attracted to the sound of a downrigger cable making the hum noise when downrigging, so maybe the acoustic sound is something like that maybe?

Another theory I've read about why fish are most active in early morning and dusk is around the angle which sunlight hits the water, apparently they can see baitfish better from the bottom when the light is coming onto the surface at a lower angle?

  6. With some decent weather on the cards the gf and I headed to some inshore reefs chasing some kings. We managed to get some squid with ease and so began fishing some reef in 20m.

We landed 10 fish between 80 and 90cm and two rats. The fish were very well fed and fought great for their size. I tried out my new rod (Saltiga PE8-10) and it was a bit overkill for these fish - being able to skull drag 85cm kings - but it is a good outfit to have for that day in the hopefully not so distant future we encounter some monsters!!!

The most success was had downrigging the baits off the fringes of bait schools. We had to spend a bit of time betweeen hookups as it seemed the fish were very picky, probably since they were so well fed.

Awesome kings! I believe I have the same rod in the overhead, waiting on my saltiga LD35 to arrive to match it, and hopefully put it through its paces with some monsters.

  7. I finally decided on a Shimano baitrunner B 4500 for my 30lb king setup.

Scored this for $185 with a Shimano rod (cant remember name) for $185.

Guy in store agreed they have had multiple failures with the D series baitrunner.

Also at this store they had a two hour fishing seminar with two pro's that I got a LOT out of, awesome!

PM me for details, or can I mention the store here?

I've also got the 4500B loaded up with 50lb braid, and it use to be my kingie setup, you'll get away with it for kings up to around 85cm, anything bigger will be tough! and I have been smoked in the past by these bigger models. These days, my rig are the saltist and saltiga combos, and possibly a stella in the pipleine, just got to convince the :wife: hehehe

  8. Great haul of squid, considering i just got a live bait tank in, i think i need a haul like that to get into the kings !

The live bait tank is definitely a must, but as you can see sometimes having squid still doesn't land you those big kings. Having said this however, we did mark a lot of activity on the sounder but they just weren't interested. We even put a yakka down, but still no takers.

The only difference between last week and this week was that we were fishing a falling tide this week, we all know that tides affect feeding patterns inside estauries, but does it also affect fish outside in deeper waters? Anyone have any comments on this?

  9. Nice haul of squid. Is the swell normally as big as it was around Bare at 7 this morning? Not knowing the area it caught me off guard, so we spent the day bottom fishing for under size.

The area being so close to the heads will get the brunt of a swell, just be careful when crossing through of the bommie when in swelly conditions. Head around by going towards north head first then coming back in.

  10. Hi raiders, went out with Formosan today, (in my boat this time). Hoping to replicate our successes of late in landing big kings.

A little bit of a late start, got to our squid grounds and straight away we were onto them, netted 10 in around an hour. Headed out to our usual spot, whacked on a nice medium size squid and we started our usual routine of downrigging, not one hit after a few passes, but the next pass ended up being a nice fat salmon. After about a dozen passes we ended up with only 3 salmon, decided to stop wasting our squid on the salmon, we headed inside, ended up with a double hookup of rats.

Well, guess we can't get onto the hoodies every week, but wasn't too bad a day anyway, and ended up with a heap of calamari rings,

I've been getting quite a bit of PM's on squid jigs, colours, sizes... so I thought I would post a pic of my arsenal, the 3 in the middle of the picture are my gun jigs... they never fail me! :biggrin2: All but 1 are yamashita's and range from 2.0-3.0. But the main thing is to have a wide range of colors, Formosan got his share of squid on a clear body white.

  11. Nice kings I bet u would of loved to net those 2 that got away.

Yep, first one came torpedoing towards us when we cleared the reefs, was quite happy as it meant I had less line to wind in, we saw leader and colour (estimated to be 10+ kg), then it woke up and changed directions back the other way, then gone, at first we thought it spat the hook, but then on closer inspection, the hook snapped. The second one that busted us off didn't give us a chance... just the zzzzzzzzzz.....zzzzzzz.....zzzzzz and then gone and a whole heap of :ranting2::ranting2::ranting2:

  12. Ok then I'll go into the detail of the bust offs, 1 snapped the hook in half and the other one was just simply unstoppable!! :). Think next time, we'll just use our anchor rope to fish and just haul them outta there! :). Was a great day buddy, do it again next week :)
