  1. Where have you been quinny ? No reports from you at all for the past few months?

Dont worry about the kings in the Bay .. they have not arrived yet!!! Once they do come , i'll let you know!!

    Trung

yeah buddy, been tied up with the birth of my daughter, just recently been 'allowed' to start heading out again :biggrin2:

landed a couple of rats, but been quite productive on the bream and flatty front however which makes up for it :biggrin2:

let's see who can land the first legal king this summer :biggrin2: , see you out there soon buddy

  2. Been a while since I've posted anything, but just recently been able to get out on the water again due to the birth of my daughter.

Been out in the bay a couple of times this past week and it's good to see signs of life again with boils starting again. Still haven't landed a legal king this summer yet, just a couple of rats but hopefully in the next week or so, water temp is hitting 22-23 degrees and we all know what that means

But here are some pics of some recent catches, first session was Monday 2nd, ended up with a tally of 13 bream, biggest going 40cm, did anyone end up lining up back at the ramp for about 45 minutes? that day was crazy, couldn't believe the number of boats out there :biggrin2:

Went out again this arvo, knowing that a big southerly was going to be blowing around 5, I had about 1.5 hrs to be as productive as can be, and ended up with 4 breams and 3 nice size flatties. And right on cue, the howling initially started from the rocket launchers and then it started pelting down! quickly packed up and gunned it back to the ramp, and it was blowing a gale!!!

  3. Hey were you fishing at Mollinox point by yourself in the coast runner?... I was the annoying allycraft cruising trevally ally trying to learn how to use my down riggers.

Yes that was me!! So you were the one dr'ing and scaring all he fish away! :) only kidding! Molli point hasn't fired up yet, water temp inside the bay isn't high enough yet, it was around 21-22 last year when all u needed do was anchor up, put down yakkas or fresh squid and you'll be onto them kings! Even if most of them were rats! :). I was dr'ing outside which landed me the rat king, I had good showings on the sounder but the current was too strong and I couldn't hold long enough. How did you go that day? Sorry areo.gard for stealing your post :) and if your question was directed at me and yes I was the one anchored up at molli. Which boat were you in?

  4. I too was out yeaterday in the bay from 6am-1pm. Filled the tank with yakkas, no squid, managed a king which barely made 50cm. Water was dark and green, 19 degrees. However, did managed 2 keeper breams and a trevally.

  5. Hey trung

It was me that saw you that day at Mollinuex Point. I recognised your boat from your boat building post - boat looks good btw. We were hoping for some kings that day, but ended up with about 8 trevallys instead. Nothing touched our dead squid baits, not even a single rat. This was probably because we didnt have any live bait. We went to yarra bay for some yakkas and squid and got nothing. How do you seem to find the squid everytime? must be a squid whisperer or something!

Was nice to sorta meet you anyways.

BTW i wished i owned a formsa, its actually a blue allycraft.

    Yee

Hey Yee, the problem is if you get there after 7am, Trung would have cleaned up the squid already by then, he is usually out there by 5, so get there early!!! I've learnt my lesson :biggrin2:

  6. Been looking to get a decent jigging outfit but still undecided on whether to go spin or overhead. Can anyone help me decide? Pros, cons? Budget is around $400ish for the reel and $200ish for the rod.

    Thanks a bunch!!

  7. Hey Quintrex480

    Have you been out recently?

been out a few times in the last few months, landed a few rats and a couple of just legal kings, but more so to find new squidding grounds but most of the squid were caught in the usual grounds.

and in regards to heading out at 4am for the squid, this needs to be done because anyone arriving after you might as well not even bother unless they can throw their jigs into your squid bucket :biggrin2:

  8. That's an awesome king! most guys get busted off from a boat on a king that size, so great work landing it from the yak!

I just recently got myself a yak as well, got a couple more modifications to do, and hopefully I can join the 'king from a yak' club. :biggrin2:

  9. I remember catching my first rat, i was spewin i couldn't keep it haha, maybe they should have a rule one or two under 65 only or something

AHAHAHAH that's what the boys were saying, "should be able to keep any size if it's your first one" ahhahaha

  10. Nice one mate, kings are kings, a few mates have gotten onto rats so it seems they are hanging around, hopefully one of the bigger fellas pokes its head up :)

Very true for those of us who have caught plenty before, but the boys were quite devastated that they couldn't take any home hehehe

  11. Hi, been out a couple of times in the last couple of months (this dam weather holding me back) and seems like the rats are still around. Last trip out was on Sunday, took a work friend and his mate out for the first time trying to get them their first king. They were hard squidding throughout the week and managed to bring a few frozen ones along. But fresh is always best so we decided to try for some around yarra and bare island. Manged to get a couple in about an hour, so decided to head over to Molli for some kings. Sounder was looking quite promising and turning on my fish alarm had 'beeps' constantly coming on, I soon realise there was a pattern, these beeps would come on almost every 5 minutes and we'll get a hit, so it just proves what we've all known, that kings just cruise up and down the breakwall.

Stripped up the squid and not long after we were on, and I showed the newbies how to do it first, brought the rat up and quickly released (to the dismay of my fellow companions :biggrin2: who really wanted to keep it).

Not long after, got the guys onto their first kings and always makes me laugh watching a newbie struggling with a king, even though they were rats, they still gave them a run for their money. Then whilst I was trying to get the hook out of one of rats on the floor, my bait boards just suddenly breaks apart any everything on it goes flying, I stand up and I see my rod zoom straight into the water and it was gone in no time :ranting2::ranting2: So if anyone comes by a king with a Ugly Stick and Okuma bait runner Epix 60 hanging on the end of it, can you please PM me :biggrin2: and it just so happens one of the guys was filming and caught the board tilting over and then just break apart, who knows, could have been a hoodie :biggrin2: I'll post the video once I've done some editing :biggrin2: if this is what winter has to bring, I can't wait till summer and hopefully the bigger models come to play as well.

  12. Hey George - you bring up a few interesting points about bait vs lures in botany bay. More so than anything - depending on the targeted species one will do better than the other...from my experience in the botany...

Predatory fish - flathead, tailor, salmon + squid ... lures will win no contest in the hands of an experienced fisher person.

For scavengers - whiting, bream, travs... baits will pull more fish. (some will say that bream can be caught in bigger numbers with lures but I have struggled in this area.. anyone what to give me a lesson here? :biggrin2: )

For Kingfish - Fresh/live squid will win by far! But if you take away squid as bait then I would say lures would be on par with all other bait when it comes to landing keeper kings

So - if we were to do a mini competition of bait vs lures in Botany Bay I would put $5 on the lure team coming home with the heavy total catch of KEEPER/LEGAL fish. Who is up for the challenge?

    Trung

Hell yeah! bring it! since Trung is going to be on the lure team. I definitely am on the bait side :biggrin2: . Let me know when and where. P.S Trung, went and did some land base squidding in the harbour this arvo and got myself a bag of squid, all ready for the weekend. You going to be out this weekend?

  13. Yeah put in the time and effort for the squid and u'll be rewarded and yes sometimes get's really frustrating but I will not leave the squid grounds until i have a couple in the tank. Sometimes i'll spend up to 3 hrs, but i always say to anyone i take out, get the squid and u'll get the kings.

  14. Nice report and what a catch!!! no wonder why it was so hard squidding in the bay yesterday! you had caught them all the day before :biggrin2: next time please let me know what day you are going out so I can plan to go out the day before ehhehe :biggrin2: well done again!!!

  15. Mate, I know what you mean. Was out yesterday and squidded for 3 hrs in the bay and only managed 3 lolly pop ones however I did drop a decent size one at the boat. But definitely agree, it has become harder squidding lately.

  16. That's an awesome king buster! Well done! I was out there today also, but all i managed were rats, a whole heap of them! A bit dissapointed after a couple weeks of legals. If you don't mind me asking, what time did u get the kings?
