nice drummer - im hoping to land a 50cm model one day!
Its funny, my last 2 sessions a year apart produced a 50 and a 53 cm football! great fun in Sydney. one was from 120ft deep!
A good sized drummer.
Many years ago, I took a whiting road to Lord Howe Island, with 6lb mono. I took a bag of bread crusts with me and threw some onto the water as far as I could throw from the rocks. The drummer swam to the surface to grab the bread, so I hooked up the crusts, no sinker and lobbed them out. When the drummer grabbed the crust, I set the hook and let them run, and they all swam away from the rocks near the surface. I let them swim way out from the rocks, then when they tired, wound them in and washed them onto the rocks.
Managed a couple around the 2 or 3 pound mark, and one I guessed was around the 5 pound mark.
Could be worth trying around here, as when you hook them near the bottom, they don't have far to swim under a rock.
Sounds fun, although i like to put the hurt on early so im not left wondering what if! I hate loosing big fish without seeing them

Sounds like a fun session. Seems like the conditions have turned the fish on the chew, we had a great few hours on friday also.

53cm is a good fish, but it would be nice be able to pull them away from the rocks in a boat rather than into the rough stuff, which is the case fishing from the rocks. I imagine it must be a bit hairy that close to the rocks in a boat when the swell is is still a bit angry! What bait were you using ? Did you berley ?
yeah its fun off the boat but the dustups happen when the fish goes for the shore. Its good to get up and down on them in the deeper water but if you give them an inch they'll get that big paddle tail surging for the bottom and the nearest crevass. much like big snapper.
the fish were caught on prawns with bread burley.

Dredog and I braved the weather reports and headed out to fish the washes in close. Drummer were the target species and using the Ipilot on dredogs sweet boat we were able to catch a few in trying conditions.
After a big bustoff, we managed to pull a few over the side including a new PB for me at 53cm which was a solid football of a Pig! Man they go hard on the light snapper combos!
We managed a few more keeper Snapper and trevally as by catch which was fun for a few short hours fishing. Great to give the Ipilot a solid workout and putting some more time into these black beasts!
Look forward to cooking some up!

a FAD is a fish. aggregation. device. its a buoy attached to the bottom in an area where there is no structure. The presence of this chain and barracles in the middle of nowhere attracts the whole food chain from tiny organisms to megafauna feeding on them. fish also use the structure as a reference point and move around the area, returning to the structure for safety. you can find anything from bait to marlin holding at a fad.

its 17 kms from sth head

hey chewie
I should have no problem then in a 489 stacer baymaster 75hp ??? Its a brand new boat ??? Which ramp do you go from to get there go from rosebay or is there one closer
rosebay, you should be fine depending on your fuel tank size. be careful with your safety routines and be confident in your boats capabilities.
-
hey mate,
i launch from rose bay, also little manly is closest from the harbour. the trip up is approx 16km so it is a fair way in a small boat. the long reef ramp can be tricky if you are not confident. surge, swell and changing conditions can cause havoc.
how big is your fuel tank?

thats a horse! can totally appreciate the tense moments especially in a comp. Massive fish and well done team.

Nice going Chewie! some awesome reds there mate! which colour jerk shad did most of the damage?
can't wait to get stuck into them myself.
Thanks mate, caught them on every colour I sent out, you can see in the pics. They didn't seem picky as to colour selection.

Im sitting at work after a very long day and I see those pictures. Well done buddy. Very jealous , knew I should have scrapped work and gone fishing. Work all ways seems to get in the way. Very healthy reds. You have well and truly christened that rod now. But seriously, when are we fishing next?
