  1. My new Snapper combo arrived today. A Shimano Nano Px 5 - 10kg matched with a stradic Ci4+ 4000 sized reel. The weather looked great so i went on a Solo session to Longreef to see if i could find some Snaps.

Well i wasn't disappointed! Plenty of nice reads on the sounder and managed some nice fish on plastics...

Funnily, it was actually the first time i have taken my Poly up to Longreef as i usuallly fish other areas, It was strange being the only boat out there in perfect conditions. Happy Days...

the biggest fish was landed on my Snapper slayer combo- black mamba, rarenium combo. 4 -7kg

All fish were released to fight another day...

Thats me hooked for winter...tight lines

  2. Nice work! That's the 7th big bull I've seen a picture of this season off Sydney. I guess the big bulls are a rare and prized catch considering the thousands of smaller dollies caught this season.

    Best Dollie season ever!

  3. Hey man normally troll about 6-8kn and run lures at different distances every time depending on changing conditions, run a short corner and a shotgun out the back and split those two with another one or two in between. Also if you run a teaser put a lure a few meters behind that. Very hard to clear everything when fishing solo but it's a challenge and great fun...

    Thanks mate!

  4. strike hard when you initially get the hit, get them in as quick as possible, solid constant tension, dont lift their head over the water to avoid headshakes. swim them into the net.

go hard with the drag, they wont slice you off.

  5. Went for a quick trip to Port Stephens, managed 2 quick sessions inside the bay as the swell was pumping outside and the wind was blowing.

day one, managed a few flatties on the plastics fishing structure. day 2 fished a bit harder, started with squid and cuttles in shoal bay, including a few big inkers, then soaked the cuttles on the salamander wreck for an hour in the hope of a jewie but only managed a wobbygong and a shovel nose.

decided to try for a flounder to compliment the squid for dinner. so stopped at an area fellow member scratchie mentioned via PM and we were rewarded with 2 nice keeper reds and another big arrow squid for the keeper bag. My Gf, was keen to get her first keeper snapper on a plastic and it was nice to be surprised with one on the 2kg gear!

managed a few other fish to keep us entertained and some fun sessions on a beautiful totally different waterway to fish than sydney.

    tight lines.

  6. I reckon planning a drift across browns mountain with a big whole southern calamari squid about 100ft off the bottom would be a start. use a breakaway style lead weight, and a quality led light in your rig. there are heaps of good articles on rigs and techniques from the usa and NZ.

Also pump plenty of light into the water from you boat to attract, local deep water bait then use them as bait.

  7. Chewie,

Great fish. I was out Saturday and Sunday and got onto the dollies at the southern fad on Sunday. Got a good feed also but only up to 70-75cm. All the fish were full of small jackets the same as your bull.

Got caught coming back in the storm on Saturday, was in a 25ft boat but was still packin brown ones.

    Congrats mate

Agreed, I don't get out that wide very often. Otherwise it's too uncomfortable.

  8. I've got a mate who has a 480 poly brumby who would be delighted to hear that a poly of that size can handle it out wide.

yeah the last time I was out for dollies at the fad, was just throwing plastics, but will give the livies on the downrigger a more serious go next time.

It's a confidence thing. Know your boat, be safe have the safety gear nearby. It's actually calmer out wide to where I usually fish.
