A great report @fisholb, thanks for sharing - heaps of Bonnie’s around at the moment (I love them as fresh cut bait). I bet your mates loved getting those Kingies, sounds like a real “rat attack”

    Yes mate

kingys are always fun to catch on 10lb 😎😎😎😂😂😂

Lots of fun in that catch. Your friends would have been chuffed.
My preference is to slit the throat and bleed bonnies as soon as caught if I plan to eat them. It improves the flavour and texture significantly.
    cheers Zoran

Yes we usually bled but it gets too messy on the boat

A live bait is never "too big" you would be very surprised how big a bait even smaller Kingfish can/will take and get down easy.

I’ll try and use one of the big slimys next time

we got a black marlin last time we used a big slimys for bait

    Gday Raiders,

I took a mate (who also jet ski fishes) out to go for some local snapper & kings today.

first light loaded up on yakkas and headed out. Hit up the snapper spot first - my mate hooked a 60cm king - released. I kept casting with my streakz SP.

I was casting for about an hour with no bites, then the rod bends over and I’m onto a big fish - I pull back and it takes off hard. It’s a very good fish 70+ from the way it’s pulling. Stupid me didn’t yank the rod to get a good hook set and with some hardcore head shakes, the hook pulls!

After about another 20 mins, we leave and head over to the kingy spot from last week - bait balls everywhere and big marks on the sounder. I throw over a livie and within a minute I’m on - both of us fight fish after fish.
    I kept a 66cm & 70cm

    My mate kept a 65cm and a 80cm - he also hooks up a 60cm Bonnie on a yakka.

we bring in a few more just under and release.

mate has to leave at 11am, so I decide to hit up a couple of squid spots.

Squid are on fire in the hacking! Finally.

spent the next two hours bringing in 14 green eyes. Some small and some good eating size. Will keep the small ones for bait, and the large ones are going to become entree’s.

Passing one of the fish to a work mate, and some fillets & a couple of squid to my parents as I have enough fish from last week. Will be keeping the rest of the squid as I’ve been waiting for months for some calamari 😋

  5. Hi all

its been awhile now since I last posted

took 2 of my bff fishing recently

target was first kingy for one of my bff

got to the ramp around 6am and the ramp was already half full

decided to troll from the ramp all the way to little bay hoping for something big

decided to use the Penn 8500 and Penn 6500 with 50lb braid and 50lb leader using the halco redhead 160dd and the mackbait 4in in the 2 Penn combos and my 2 bff using the Penn 4500 combo with 20lb braid and 20lb leader to spin the Jackson 28g lures and Rapala cd7

we got our first hit around cape banks and landed our first bonito for the day on the Jackson g lures

for the next 2hrs we keep getting hookups and double hookups from cape banks all the way to little bay and back

ended up with 13 bonito on the troll biggest one around the 2-3kg

decided to go back inside to molli when the wind started to pick up

got to the molli reef around 10am and fished the reef until around 1pm

i promised one of my bff I will get him his 1st kingy so I was full of hope when I saw a large school of kingy rats busting up around the reef

trolled around the reef but can’t get any of the kingys to take the lures so decided to anchor up and use bait instead

for the next 3hrs we hooked up plenty of kingy rats and my 2 bff both landed kingy rats up to 60cm on my Penn 4000 combo with 20lb braid and 10lb leader using pilly cubes

lost over a dozen kingys on the side of the boat and ended up with a mixed bag

I’m so happy we got our target fish today for one of my bff

got to the ramp around 2pm

    thanks for reading

  6. Hi all

had the day off so decided to hit the Northside for a change

got to the ramp around 11am

trolled from the ramp all the way to the heads with no hits

decided to bottom bash around the heads with only baby snappers so after one hour decided to hit our favourite spot around Newport

within 5 mins of our first drop my mate hooked on something big using half pilly on a two hook sliding sinker rig

After a couple of minutes we had our first keeper on the boat

    a 42cm snapper

Biggest legal snapper we got this year

hi fives all round and was a very good start

that was followed by more than a dozen baby snapper up to 25cm all went back to grow more

also got 1 legal Trev at 33cm with half a dozen going back to also grow more

also got about half a dozen yakkas which we use for live bait but no takers

we were using Pillys chicken strips and yakkas for bait

went quiet around 4pm so decided to head back closer to the ramp before the sunlight disappear

tried a spot near the ramp and the bridge but the current was too fast and can’t touch bottom

we were using 4oz snapper sinkers

decided to head back to the ramp around 630pm

took home 1 snapper 1 Trev 3 yakkas

    Home around 830pm

    asleep by 10pm

was a quiet day in the water today

    thanks for reading

    sorry no pics

Don't get a Nissan Pathfinder R52 either, only towed with it once or twice and after 43,000km we have just had the 3rd transmission replaced, Original lasted 16,000 the next not much more but replaced at 43,000km as Nissan debated it.

Car is out of warranty now and this transmission only has a 20,000km / 1yr warranty.

    Just sold my pathfinder r52

had gearbox replaced last October and gearbox started to play up again so decided to get rid of it

cost to replace a gearbox is $15k and only comes with 1yr or 20000kms

wont ever buy a Nissan again

better off buying a Toyota or Mitsubishi

  8. Caught kingys on chicken strips

just plain chicken thighs cut into strips

also u can buy frozen Cali squid cut into strips

    frozen pillys cut in cubes

fresh is best but u can still catch kingys on any bait

depends on how hungry the kingys

    goodluck

    Hi Fisholb,

Thanks for response. how many would you put in water at same time also would we be able to bottom fish or not recommended?

we usually put 2 live yakkas while we bottom bash

we put the live yakkas around 15m to 20m from the boat in different depths

always put the live yakkas on either side of the boat so they dont get tangle up

    Morning guys,

This morning headed to Foreshore road boat ramp and docked in just before 5am.
Cruised over to the cans i think you guys call it for some yakkas. We managed to pull in 10 using sabiki jigs with some bread and some pilchard.
We moved on to molineaux point, on the yarra bay side but only had small fish stealing our bait. We tried dropping a yakka down but only managed to tangle our lines. After about 1 hour we relocated to pretty much on the corner of molineaux point. Some more small bites but nothing exciting.

8am on the dot, last line going in decided to put a full pilchard. Within 2 minutes line starts screaming and pulls to the left tangles with couple of other rods but got them sorted then comes back around. After a nice fight on light gear I got it to the surface, Kingfish! No net i pull the rod back to grab the line then decides to go for another run and snaps the line!

After that nothing, packed up because had to be at work soon 😱

Need some advice on what to do with live yakkas. We normally are anchored. Sinker? no sinker? balloon? what is the trick with them?

we put live yakka on float around 3m to 5m drop

  11. hi raiders

one of my bff got a new boat (surtees workmate 495 with 60hp) and he asked me if i can show him some fishing spots. finished work around 130am  packed my fishing gear and got to my mate around 4am. got to the ramp around 5am and decided to catch some bait at clifton. spent around 30mins trying to catch some bait but with no success so decided to troll north head. trolled for around 2hrs for 1 bonito and 2 mac tuna. bonito was caught on the mackbait redhead and 2 mac tuna on the banana mack. decided to go to balmoral and try catch some bait. spent around 1hr at balmoral catching baby snapper bream flattys and 1 kingy(60cm) on chicken strips and pilly cubes. wind started to pick up around midday so decided to head back to the ramp at drummoyne. took a while to come back to the ramp and had to wait at the ramp for a while because a boathire company left 1 boat at the ramp while he got another boat. got home around 6pm. went to bed around 8pm. its a very long day but worth it. the new boat was excellent. hoping to go outside the heads again soon. thanks for reading.

btw, one of my bff went trolling last friday 22/3/19 at north head and caught 5 bonito and 3 mac tuna. 2 of my bff went fishing botany bay 23/3/19 and caught 2 legal kingys around molli point. still plenty of rats at the bay atm.

This is the one I caught a long time ago, if I had of been able to measure it properly is probably close to 60cm at the fork which on the calculator comes in at approx. 3.5kg.

Went back so might me 6kg by now 😀

Date stamp on the pic is 9/5/2012, boy time flies 😅

On my next outing im definitely going to be getting some livies so hopefully this will get me into one of these or a King

Sweet, Im after a salmon for my next so called 'poor mans fish' cooking/eating challenge.

Got one in the same area a few years ago & it was a nice fish, though it was a nice king the way it pulled.

I'll have to find the picture, recon it wat around 3kg?

We’ve been catching salmon lately on livebait around molli pt

salmon is an excellent sports fish

they go really hard like the kingys and you can keep them all the time for a feed

caught one on my daiwa 2000 combo and took awhile to bring it in on 10lb size 4 circle hook

I need to use at least 20lb trace next time we go fishing to decrease the bust offs

the salmon we caught were around the 2-3kg

the kids love eating salmon fillets just pan fried
