Hey Raiders,
With all the hot fishing action being reported from Port Stephens and Broughton Is ... I thought I'd counter that with a report of a very forgettable Sunday here off Sydney ... just so that some of you don't start to think our sport is called "Catching" vs "Fishing".
OK... so given the recent reports of small marlin off Sydney I gathered a crew for the weekend.
Weather and Sea condition forecast: Sunday light seas 0.6m wave interval 14sec …and NW (4kts) 5am - N - NE winds (11kts) Noon. SST showing 23C water at about 100m.
The Plan: Davidson Ramp - Balmoral (live bait) - down rig North Head - troll 12Mile - Sydney Fads - Wave Riders - North Head. Some bottom bash / jigging in-between at 12mile.
Launch: 5.00am Davidson Park Boat Ramp.
The Result:
9 yakkas in the tank by 550am.
6 -630am : Two runs downrigging along North Head at 12m... Zip. Decided to start our trip to 12mile. By now we were inline with North Head - dead calm water. Brought up the bomb and as I was unclipping the line felt a tug tug on the live bait...then nothing. Reeled in the livie (deadie) cleanly bitten off at the gills (tailor, bonito??). Ok so we dropped some skirts and shiny stuff and trolled North Head to Manly ... Zip. Hmmmm.
Decided to call it and raced out to 12mile... about 3km out from 12mile came a cross a flutter of surface bait fish. Dropped the trolling skirts - 6" and 8" Pakulas, two metal head jet skirts (purple/pink, white/blue) and a lumo teaser in close to the stern.
Trolled to 12mile, trolled around 12mile twice...Zip. Saw 10 boats and a charter there bottom bashing. So dropped down 2 livies on long leaders and 12oz lead (2.5kmh current)... livies taken but no strike no bite felt. Dropped down a paternoster with strips of yakka and another two livies. Livies gone, paternoster untouched. Still ZIP !!! Hmmmmm.
9am Boats started leaving. We called it as well and started our troll north. ... beautiful conditions offshore, water 23.8-24C and BLUE as per the video .. After 3-4hrs and without a single hit, decided to abandon continuing heading north and turned in toward Long Reef, did a couple of loops around each of the buoys and the close in Fad looking for some dollies (anything really!).... so after 6hrs and some 80+km on the water we ended up back at North Head... with 3 livies. Dropped two over the side - one weighted one free swimming .... still ZIP.
So at 330pm we gave up ....and released the 3 livies as a token offering to the good karma god for the next trip….!!!! But some how I think this crew will INSIST on bottom bashing only.
Cheers
Zoran
(PS - @Fab1...I must been taking fishing lessons from you through the week - I'll stick to reading your workshop posts only !!!! )
excellent report mate
thanks for sharing
spending time in the water with your mates is always better than spending time with your workmates lol unless your fishing mates are your workmates too
catching a fish to take home is always a bonus specially when your boss/wife loves eating fish like mine (she refuse to eat fish that are being sold at the shops...thats another story lol
goodluck on your next trip

hi raiders
decided to fish sydney harbour today with 2 of my bff
got to the ramp around 8am with about half a dozen trailers parked
wind was still blowing around 15-20kph
plan a was to bottombash sow n pigs plan b was to bottombash around goat island up to birkehead point
trolled from balls head to shark island for zeros using the halco redhead rapala redhead
got to sow n pigs but cant anchor so decided to go to clifton instead
anchor around the navy wharf and started to burley with pillys mixed with pellets
we were using chicken/mullet/prawns/pillys for bait
we were using our bream snapper combo 10lb trace using paternoster and running sinker rig
we caught around half a dozen legal bream half dozen legal flattys dozens baby snapper bream flattys
hightlight of the day was me hooking up a 61cm kingy on my daiwa 2500 combo using a paternoster with chicken strips
the fight took forever (5-10mins) lol
the kingy took 3-4 runs before we netted it
took a quick pic and let the kingy go to fight another day
hi 5s all round my biggest fish i have caught on my daiwa 2500 combo
my mate also caught a 60cm kingy but took longer to land due to the kingy wrapped around three of our lines lol
had to cut all the three lines hoping the kingy was legal but had to let it go to grew more
decided to move to watsons bay to get fish and chips for lunch
while were having lunch we fished near the moorings and caught a monster bream (39cm) on my first cast using a running sinker rig with chicken strips
maritime came and told us that we can not use the yellow bouys and only use the pink ones
someone must have rang maritime and complain that were using the yellow bouys
cant find any pink ones thats free so decided to move around the balmain area
trolled around the bridge for zeros and anchored around the pylons near birchgrove
caught another monster bream (37cm) on my first cast on my daiwa 2500 on chicken strips
for the next hour caught plenty of baby snapper and bream so decided to move around birkenhead point
fished birkenhead point for about 1hr for 2 legal bream and decided to head back to the ramp
home around 8pm
thanks for reading

hi raiders
got to rose bay ramp around 2am...originally plan was to leave home at 3am but cant sleep so decided to leave early
plan a was to troll north and south heads then plan b to bottom bash around sow n pigs balmoral clifton rosebay in case the swell was too big
decided to hang around rosebay and catch some live bait from 2am to 5am
only caught 1 yakka and dozens of baby snapper at rosebay on chicken fillets and pillys
put the live yakka on float but wasnt touch...my mate hooked a big kingy on live yakka as rosebay on nye but the hook came off so we were hoping to hook another one
started to troll around 5am with a halco redhead(16cm) a rapala longcast pilly (14cm) a savage manic prey dd ytf (16cm) a halco twisty in 55g
first pass off north head and we hooked our 1st bonito on the savage lure hi 5s all round me on the rod so decided to drive the boat and let my other mates have a go
the swell was bigger than we expected so decided to just troll up to the point then head back in
second pass we had a double hook up on the bonito on the halco redhead and savage lure so we just needed one more coz there were four of us
third pass we hook another bonito on the redhead so everyones happy
we did a couple more for zeros so decided to check south head
the swell was even bigger at south head
first pass we had a double hook up on the bonito with the halco red head (we put 2 redhead 1 rapala longcast 1 savage lure)
2nd pass we got zeros so decided to head back to north head
we did 1 more pass at north head for zeros so decided to check balmoral
put the live yakka on float then decided to bottom bash and one of my mate started spinning with the halco twisty
we saw kingys hanging around our boat and after about 30mins our live yakka was taken by a kingy
the kingy took 4 runs before we netted it but it was only 60cm so back it went to grow more
a school of salmon came so two of my mates started spinning with metals (halco) but only managed one salmon
a boat with 3 f!"£wits decided to go in front of us so we cant spin...f!"£$ing m!"£ons...then when they cant catch anything decided to anchor next to us...F1234ing losers...
anyways...caught plenty of baby snapper on chicken and pillys and got 3 legal big trevs...my mate caught another bonito at balmoral with the halco twisty
decided to check sow n pigs on our way to clifton...
caught 1 big bream at sow n pigs but decided to leave coz we couldnt anchor...was getting too dangerous so we move to clifton...
didnt get any bites at clifton but a school of bonito showed up so decided to chase the school instead...caught one on the halco twisty...
back at the ramp around 12pm but took almost 1hr to put the boat back to the trailer...boats everywhere...
home around 2pm...
tally for the day
8 bonito
3 trevs
1 bream
1 salmon
thanks for reading
ps
my mate went back the following day and caught zeros from 5am to 10am...

nice catch mate bonnies are awesome fun on light gear and that king must have got your heart pumping
thanks...wait until you catch a bonito over the 60cm...fights harder than a kingy imo...you will get a sore arms and shoulders...

hi mate
we use squid skirt tied to a squid float
very cheap lure to make to catch pelagic landbased
use trace as long as your rod
below r d list to make one
1. squid skirt
2. 3/0-5/0 suicide or long shank hook
3. squid float
4. no. 5-10 ball sinker for casting distance
5. 30-50lb trace
another option is a halco metal twisty lure
you can also use the new rapala longcast in ghost or pilly color (caught kingy and bonito)

Most days are unsuitable id go now. You’ll need a lot of luck for conditions to be suitable to take a 4.5 metre tinny out from Terrigal.

hi all
my mate wants to take his 4.5m quintrex with 50hp to avoca / terrigal to target bonito and kingfish
which ramp will be the best place to launch
any advice will be highly appreciated
thank you very much in advance
we never take the boat out in the open when the swell is over 1.5m and wind over 20kph
botany bay...never leave your mobile in your pocket when fishing

hi raiders
thought i share with you what happened to my mate recently
he decided to chase kingys recently with his son at botany bay
caught some live bait at molli and went to his fav spot
rigged one yakka on float and one to the bottom
the spot was less than 10m deep near the rocks
hooked the first kingy on the yakka on the float and measured 67cm so a quick pick and then straight on to the esky
2nd hook up was a very fat aus salmon so after a good fight salmon went back to fight another day
3rd hook up was another kingy fought longer and measured 81cm
got quiet so mate decided to spin lures to kill time
while spinning one of the rod with the live yakka went off so mate put the rod with lure down on the side and grab the other rod to fight whatever took the live bait
another salmon took the yakka and while my mate was removing the hook he noticed that the rod with the lure is missing and quickly drop the other rod with the salmon to check for the missing rod
he saw the missing rod slowly sinking on the side of the boat so he quickly jump off the boat to retrive the rod that was slowly sinking in the water
he was able to get the rod back and so he was very happy that he didnt lose that gloomis combo
while he was setting up for another live yakka he realised that his mobile phone was still in his pocket so he quickly check it and the phone was off
tried to on the mobile phone but no success so he decided to keep on fishing as what we always do lol
took the mobile phone to samsung the next day and was told that it cant be fix so thats at least $700 to get a replacement
his gloomis combo is worth around $600 so the big question was was it worth it???!!!
the answer was he rather lose the mobile phone rather than the combo lol
at the end of the day his wife got him a new iphone x so he was happy
got a new phone plus he still got his gloomis combo
thanks for reading
