Hi all,
Took the kids out on Sydney Harbour yesterday for a fish but couldn't catch a cold... or even a bite!
We fished Snails Bay around 2pm, Woolwich moorings around 3:30, then after a swim tried Hunters hill at 4:30. The weather turned so we headed back and got in as it started to rain.
I did catch a metre long stainless ladder.. was going to clean it up but covered in oysters so the kids would have stepped on it for sure.
Was burleying mouldy bread maybe that was a turn-off? Also burleyed some frozen bonito from last trip.
Would love any pointers on bait / rigs / protected spots to get the kids on to fish!
Cheers,
Andrew.
hi,
try fishing around the wharfs...rose bay / watsons bay /clifton garden / balmoral
burley with old bread you can buy a bag for $2 at most bakery
use pilly / chicken / squid strip on a paternoster type rig without any sinker (10lb trace will do) and just let it sink thru the burley trail and most of the time you will catch yakkas snapper trevally jackets and even a kingy (caught a 61cm kingy while trying to catch yakka for bait lol)
usually use hooks size from 4 to 10 or use big hooks (1/0 to 6/0) when u get sick of catching small fish lol

where about's at Avoca were you fishing? Love to have a go for a bonnie or a king!
I've tried fishing at the Northern end of the beach, but didn't have too much luck.
the spot is off avoca drive near the rock pool
theres a path that will lead you to the ledge from the parking area near the pool
pls be very careful if you havent been to that spot
pls check swell and wind before you go to that spot
can be very dangerous if the swell is over 2m
the waves will definitely come up if the swell is over 2m
been there when the swell was over 2m and it was very scary
two of my mates have been swept off that spot by huge waves and both are lucky to be alive today
both of them were not wearing safety gear and wont go back to that spot ever again
always wear safety gear
goodluck

hi raiders
decided to check avoca today hoping to catch a bonito or two.
mate pick me up around 330am and got to avoca around 5am
rigged one rod with whole pilly on float and another rod with squid skirt on float
after 10 mins the rod with pilly went off but by the time i got to the rod the hook came off
quickly put another pilly on the float and cast it to about 15-20 from the ledge
decided to spin the squid skirt on float and after the 3rd cast i landed our first bonito for 2018 hi 5s with my mate
the bonito bit my middle finger while i was removing the hook from its mouth
while i was putting the bonito to the esky the other rod with the pilly went off so i told my mate to grab it and landed our 2nd bonito for the day
in the next hour or so we had bites on pillys on float lost a few with the hook coming off or the trace got bitten off
we only had about 20pcs of pillys and we run out of bait by 7am we landed 2 kingys 63cm and 67cm quickly release the 63cm to fight another day the kingys were both caught on the pilly
we decided to use a chrome lure my mate got from kmart and fought over a dozen bonito and only landed around half a dozen
the big bonito up to 60cm preferred the pilly while the small ones preferred the chrome lures
by 830 me n my mate landed 13 bonito and only 1 kingy
decided to pack up around 9am due to our arms and shoulders starting to hurt
home around 11am

Port Kembla harbour to hill 60 is a realitively short run. Once you are out past the breakwall you can see hill 60. Should only take 15 mins or so. When you are there you can steam through a gap between the islands to get to the more productive southern side - but I would advise a first timer to head the long way round and go around the island. only take a few minutes longer.
On the southern side I have trolled up some good sized kings. A bit further south out along port beach is a great place to drift for flatties.
thanks for the info mate
yes ill be going around the island dont want to risk hitting those rocks

hi raiders,
hope everyone had an excellent xmas!!!
decided to fish botany bay instead of sydney harbour today due to the sydney to hobart race
got to the ramp around 4am with two of my bff (best fishing friend)
plan A was to troll the heads
the wind and swell looked ok from the forecast which was not 100% accurate more of a 50/50 guess work
anyway decided to go straight to molli point which was plan B and catch some bait
the wind was starting to blow when we got to molli point and decided to anchor around the reef but one of my bff started to get seasick swell was around 1m
so decided to troll the south heads which felt like forever to get there swell was getting bigger and bigger as we get near the south heads so decided to turn back to molli point
when we got back to molli point one of the rods went off with the rapala longcast in pilly/sardine color and after about 5mins we landed our 1st fish for the day a 60cm kingy which went back to fight another day
one of my bff asked me if he can go back to the ramp coz he was really gettting seasick seriously so trolled back to the ramp to drop him off
decided to troll the 3rd runway from end to end for zeros so decided to head back to molli point
half way down molli point towards the beach two of the rods went off one with the rapala longcast in pilly color and one with the halco dd redhead
after about 10mins we got 2 bonito in the esky
trolled molli point 3x more but no more takers so decided to anchor at the reef hoping to catch anything that we can take home plenty of throwbacks around the 25cm mark (trevs/snapper/flattys)
were using pillys and prawns for bait hooked one pj and one banjo on pillys
after about 1hr decided to troll molli point again for zeros so decided to go back to the ramp where one of my bff had fully recovered
got home around 3pm
thanks for reading

Don’t think it would be worth it. Long way and be much easier by car.
If you fish in port make sure you don’t anchor in the harbour as you can be fined and same goes for getting within 50m of the jetty’s. There is also a restricted area you can’t go into so make sure you know where that is before venturing further up into the harbour.
planning to fish hill60
how long will it take to get there from the port kembla ramp
currently checking the spot using my navionics app on my iphone atm
thanks for all the info
