  1. lWhat type of reel is it.? If shimano, then you need to use the little shims to get the right shape of line on the spool http://www.henry-gilbey.com/blog/is-the-wrong-winding-shape-one-of-the-causes-of-wind-knots
  2. If you fishing that area, then Westhead is a good place to try in front of the pill boxes, sound around till you see a school on the sounder and then burley up there is genersally a mess of boats around here getting yakka's in the morning, so it wont be hard to miss. Good luck
  3. yeah.. but did the song sound like daffy duck in the end????
  4. dont try and catch the worm by squeezing yourr fingers quickly rather.. slowly..SLOWLY start to squuese them by the head (they think its the sand tightening around them and keep chewing at your hand bait), when you cant squeese no more (i.e your fingers are nearly snapping off) then lift them.. if you try "grabbing them" then you will miss them
  5. Not adriatic.. i spent two days on his boat only to watch the deckie catch fish.. even when we had a chick on board, and hinted that he should pass the rod to her for some fun, he still didnt budge!!! there is another mob out there that were really good.. I'll see if i can dig up their name for you
  6. Ahhhh nice.. I have the Boston 210 outrage with 130Hp on the back Will have to meet up when I fix her up (about two weeks away) and go for run outside
  7. If you hear "Banjo's".. then paddle like there is no tommorrow!!!!!
  8. Yeah.. I dont know what it is about Brisbane.. but they always seem to fight and hit you harder up there.. Where as a 4Kg fish up there in 60 metres of water will hold you near the bottom for the while.. the equilavalent down here is a bit more lethargic.. But when they get real big.. they fight like a king sometimes (big runs.. just the head shakes give them away) Tell me about it.. Ihad one last night.. Simple BBQ, with Lemon pepper seasoning, some chinese five spice some salid and a few cold beers. It just doesn't get any better in my book!!!! Yeah, we hada small Jeep get stuck and the waves were hitting him as we got to him.. poor bloke didn't realise that you had to deflate your tyres.. Lucky i had a long snatch strap so could get him out without getting wet.. but i recon a fair bit of salt would have gone through him!!!

    A Bad Run

Am going through the same thing harold.. Have also split my fuel tank and had to get one custom built in Darwin of all places!!! have only just received it after several months and it will be anoter 4 weeks till i get too fit it. Also had a gremlin in the electric's dept and blew out the powerboard... But at the end of the day.. Its worth it when you hit the throttle and it all works!!!
  10. Hawkes Nest Beach 20/5/06 Been off the last few weeks doing some fishing before the next contract starts.. Ended up in Hawkes Nest beach to do some camping on the 20/5.. and found a nice looking gutter right in front of the lemontree beach access track. Well I stopped to have a look and got bogged didn't I.. so after running around for 30 minutes getting unstuck, I finally managed to throw in a beach worm and got hit by a Salmon on the first cast.. After fishing there for around an hour, we caught two Whiting, the one salmon, a little bream and fished out two other cars that were also getting stuck in the sand (made me feel a lot better knowing I wasnt the only idiot to get stuck in front of the access track!!!). Went home with the idea of hitting the beach after dark to chase a Jewie. Well after cooking the fish, and several beers later, we decided that the swags were the best place to be, and we would go for a fish first thing in the morning. Hit the swags and the heavens opened.. and I mean opened... So there we were, wet, cold and miserable.. when morning came all we could manage was to light a fire, get dry and head home (So much for the Jewies!!!) Brisbane 24/5/06 Headed up to Brisbane on the Monday and took a boat out on the Tuesday out about 10Km's out from the Stradbroke/Morton Bay Bar..the fishing was hard and by 2 O'clock we hadent hit anything noteworthly and then like a switch the fish just came on.. Over there we sound for fish in around 60 metres of water, plot the school and then drift through them.. which is a little different from how I fish for them over here. After 2:00 we were getting snapper on each drop with the majority being in the 4Kg range. By three we had caught our baglimit and released around 15 fish as well.. so we took off home. (all the fish were snapper) Brisbane 26/5/06 Went out again on the 26th, this time I got hit on the first drop, It wasnt a snapper but faught like a mongeral.. Ended up being a 4 foot bronze whaler shark, then I puttled in a 4Kg Amberjack.. After that it was a mixed bag of snapper and pearl pearch and one large but unlucky squid..we hit our baglimit on the first hour and tried to get an amberjack or kingie for no luck before heading home. I went up to Brisbane with 8Kg on luggage (carry on) and came home with 23Kg.. My fridge is looking good with a healthy population of snapper which is a good thing as I just found out that my boat wont be fixed for another 4 weeks (still mucking around with a cracked fuel tank... but I am a lot closer to having it all fixed now) I wish snapper fishing was that easy in Sydney!!! 11. That would have kept you on your toes!!! My theory is that is you touch it and then loose it.. its considered as "Catch and release" (well thats how i justify not crying myself to sleep every night!!!)
  12. we used to get a barrel sinker, paint it white and put a treble on the end. Worked well for spinning Bonnies of the rocks, and was a lot cheaper than a bought lure.
  13. Im Freelancing!!! but have just been told that a new contractg might start up in a few weeks time. ormally, I work in Business Development/sales for IT type companies.

    The Budget

and thats probably why hes called numbers!!!! Classic!!!
  15. I recon putting them in an oven ruins them... Try cutlets on a BBq with a little lemon +Pepper Seasoning.. Gold!!!! (Oh and I bleed and gut them as soon as I catch them as well)
  16. the water is too shallow in my creek for Celta's, so i go a floating minnow. The Rapala F-5's did most of the damage, but any floating minnow of that size should get into them.
  17. I dont know much about this particular unit, but I have gotten the a more expresie Garmin unit and its gold.. Just one tip, make sure that it has a "plotter function", I had one GPS that showded you direction to travel and course etc etc, but had no plotter.. so in the end it would get you near the place, but then you had to use the lon and lat to get you exact on.. Probably a good idea to see if you can load maps in it for the future as well, as the GArmin maps are pretty accurate and very hands to have ( but they cost $'s!!) good luck!!
  18. Yeah, thats about as big as I have ever seen them. I will see if I can dig up an old pic of one from the "old Days", but as a guide they are about the length of two A4 sheets of paper end on end (dont have a ruler sorry) Its great fun when you hit them as they just charge over the rapids into the next pool, so its a bit of a rush to keep up with one The creek that I fish in is tiny and a bit hard to fly fish. We end up getting into the water as its pretty thick on the sides and even then it can get a little tricky casting as you have to get right under the willows tree's and over hangs to get a follow. Sorry mate, it is a little place that I have fished in for around 20 years now and I keep it secret purley for "Old times Sake". I have fished Lake lyall though a fair bit and my tip is to go up any creek and try the first couple of deep pools that you come to as they will be probably holding there waiting for the first bit of fresh to come down. If you walk up the river that feeds into the lake, then walk past all the sand and start fishing where you get into the rocks and blackberry's.. it would surprise me if you didnt get anything there (Cast right into the overhangs and blackberry/willows.. regardless of how deep the water is) (I am going there in two weeks as it has worked well in the past) Good luck!!!
  19. Boat is still broken, so I went up to the mountains last weekend to try a little creek that has produced a few trout in the past.. The water was pretty clear and shallow, so it took a lot of effort to stalk up to the good pools, Every tree, branch, stick or rock seemed to have a small trout under it.. Every cast would have at least three of the little blighters (around 15cm long) chasing it. In the end it turned into a trip where you would have to sight and target your fish, or risk getting another little one that would spook the pool. Overall a very enjoyable afternoon and a good test of the casting skills (no lures lost!!!). We ended up releasing just over 20 (around 5 were keepers) and we missed out on a 6 pounder that was sitting in a rapid that we didn't see but nearly stepped on. Looks like there might be a few more good weeks till trout season closes, but hopefully my boat will be up and running again in the next month so I dont have to worry so much about the cold!!! (it was a little fresh in the river!!)
  20. Yeah.. I used to swim there a fair bit!!!!! I'm still stumped that I got a hit in the first 30 minutes in the middle of the day (well, 4:30 anyway).. Either they are territorial and stay in the same spot, or there are a few of them in there. I'll give it a hit next week when I come back from Hol's and see if he is still around.. this time I will be packing Wire.
  21. It just doesnt get any better than that!!! Good work, flatties have to be in my top five of eating fish!!, (I always dribble a little when I think about eating them..)
  22. Awesome kings!!!!!! That Coromandel area is a fantastic place.... I had to kill some time for work and ended up there for a few days once.. didnt have a rod, but could see huge schools of salmon working from the cliff tops!!! I am guessing its a pretty popular place duriong X-mas... as when I was there, there were big turkeys everywhere!!!! (Nearly hit a few in the 4wd.. I mean "Hire car")
  23. Well I found a little wire trace and threw it into the tackle bag to see if my shark was still in the area. I felt a little dicky walking down the track at Bobbin head with a TLD 25, but luckly there wern't many people there to laugh at me. Got down to my little hole and there were two people swimming in the spot I last saw the shark.. I explained to them the situation and they agreeded that it was best that that stop splashing around (it was their choice to leave..and I did feel a little guilty that i rained on their parade...but then again I would have felt worse If i had said nothing and something happened) Anyway I unpacked the bag and sure enough, I couldnt find the wire...bugger (still don't know where it got to) Ended up rigging a 20 Kg Mono trace with a stinger hook rig, then I went to terrorise a small school of mullet that I had seen balled up around the corner. It took around an hour to finally get one, (I kept getting bream!!!), but finally I got a big fella of around 35cm's and threw him out. I set the TLD into free spool with the ratchet on and went back to fishing for more mullet for burley. Not more than 20 minutes later I notice the line on the mullet is going a bit nuts and he is going crazy,(Not pulling line out, but getting real figetty) then all of a sudden, about 20 feet of line peels off in a hurry and stops. I put down my bream/mullet rod and wait for about 20 seconds before he starts running again....setting the 12Kg to strike I lean back to find a decent weight on the other end of the line...He then feels me and then he runs.. It felt like 40 metres in less than 3 seconds, he was moving fast into the bay. and he stayed high up in the water column so I stuck it to him and the more I gave him the harder he pulled.. After 5 minutes of fight, I started to get him in and you guessed it.. the trace snapped (right behind the front hook on the stinger rig).. He was a good size unit, and I am guessing that it was the six footer that i saw the other day. (or maybe there is more) I have to go away tomorow for a week, but I will be there next week for sure.. this time with wire!!!
  24. Never seen one before so I couldn't tell you...all i saw was a broad head and a tapered body might have to re-think the whole wading proposition all over again!!! Do they hang around the same spot.. I might take the TLD down there and have some fun if they hangaround a bit.
  25. Question for all who fish the area. Whats the biggest shark that you have seen up near apple tree bay. The reason I ask is that I have been doing a little shore based fishing in the first few bays you get too as you walk around on the track, (Boat is still broken!!!) Yesterday afternoon I was wading across the flats, about waist deep and a big black shape cruises in... turns about ten metres away and runs parrallel to me.. after a few seconds (seemed like an eternity) he turned and went back his merry old way.. I couldnt see it too well cause of the wind on the water, but it was definily was a shark, about 6 foot (thou they do look bigger when your in the water with them). Nearly sh*t myself when it happened.. an lets just say when he went.. I got out of the water pretty damn quick (you try running whilst not splashing!!!) He had a petty broad head and a tapered down body.. any ideas what type it could have been?
