Hey fellow Raiders!
The 'to do' list at home was getting longer and longer and fishing was right at the bottom of the list. My little boy then asked me yesterday if we could go fishing, so at the blink of an eye fishing suddenly appeared at the top of the list
With the limited time we had we then went down to a local spot at Hawthorne canal at the back of Blackmore Oval Leichhardt to try our luck on the bream population. We got there just after the start of the runout tide. I rigged up my light SP outfit, 4lb braid, 6lb leader with a small float, No 2 hook, no sinker and bread for bait.
I threw out some mashed up bread in the vicinity to get a berley trail happening and then cast in amongst it. Then handed the rod to the little boy and told him to watch the float and lift the rod if the float goes under. The float went under a few times but he was looking elsewhere and not paying attention and therefore no hook up
Baited up again, cast out, and this time he payed attention and struck when the float went under and came up tight After some spirited runs and taking some line I helped him land a nice solid bream in great condition that went 32cm (not sure if this is considered a blue nose). He was so happy reeling in this fish After a few high fives, a quick photo and thanking the fish for the experience, we threw him back in to fight another day.
After that we got a few undersize bream that were all released then things went quiet and the little boy was asking when are we going home. To keep him occupied for just a little while longer I let him play a game on my phone and I decided to flick around a 3 inch bass minnow in pearl watermelon on a 1/16 hidden weight jig head and landed and released this flathead that went 40cm:
I then got snagged and called it quits.
There were plenty of mullet in the canal jumping everywhere but surprisingly we didn't catch one even though we were using bread for bait.
Since yesterday's afternoon adventure my little boy has been telling everyone that he caught a "massive" fish and that he can't wait to go again
Thanks in advance for reading and for any comments posted.
All the best and may you all catch some big ones.
Ian
