  1. If ur targetting the bread and butter species in the surf, i wouldnt be using star sinkers and anchoring your baig in one spot of the gutter, or elsewhere. Use long leader, size 2-4 baitholder and a running ball sinker (size depending on swell, and obviously if swell is too rough it becomes much harder) and a fresh prawn for bait, this will get bream,, if u want whiting use worm hook, abd beach worms, tube worm etc... and same set up. Let your rig move around, not just in the gutter. Cast out into the gutter and let your rig move wherever it wants to go, and manage your line. If it comes back to the bank, reel back in and cast it out again. Keep moving around and cover ground. Holding to one spot for bread and butter species will just limit your time in the 'zone' When beach fishing i always look for gutters and holes and target them first, if i cant get what im targetting for i always move. When starting beach fishing i used to whack on a big star sinker and patternoster gang pilly, and aim it into the gutters, at times ill get the fish, but i used to spend hours with bait in the gutter only to hook onto nothing. Move around, youll find fish better.
  2. Live bait: tube worms, prawns, nippers Small ball sinker wig with small weights and long trace, size 4 worm hook or long shank Running up tide You can fish of the groynes casting with the current, and let ur rig drift and feel the bites Ive seen lots of whiting caught here and also flathead, but i do know trevalley, pinkies, bream can be caught here aswell. It wouldnt hurt to use some burley aswell if ur fishing in one spot.
  3. You can buy burley scoops at the campsie tackle store. Perfect for throwing out burley in any kind of system. Comes in different lengths and sizes, it relly lets you peg those burley bombs out as close or far as you want, as long as the consistency is right.
  4. If ur targetting bream. A simple old crummed bread, sand, and sea water mixed into a good paste that can ball up. In still waters it will drop straight down and slowly disperse brining in bream big and small. An small lead weight or no weight at all into the area where you burleyed withh get you onto some. With running waters slow drift would be good with minimal weights. Or even a small light weith pencil float. As for bait, use whatever ur burlying with, so some fresh white bread on a small size 8 hook will do the job. Just let the current take line and feel for the bite. Target a single species and then burley for them, instead of mixing everything old n smelly together.
  5. How insore were you guys fishing. Rock drummer in hacking? Damn, shows how clean the water is down that way. Was this in still clear waters of the hacking?
  6. Ah right. Yeah id thought they'd be in schools due to the on and off multiple hook ups in a short amount of time. Mabe i shouldve burleyed more to keep them concentrated in the area., but all in all im happy with the end result. its nice to sometimes sit back and take in the ocean while the bites off. (not really) haha. Hey mate, was using the thicker leaves of sea cabbage. The thinner parts of the cabbage seemed to not get any hits.
  7. Went for a quick morning blackfish off the stones this monday morning. Upon arrival at 530 am with a predicted swell of 1.2m on a rising tide peaking at 1030, i was abit weary on the location and the conditions on the day because of similar conditions at the same spot have seen and herd of a few people getting put on their rear side. After watching from the cliff edge while waiting for a mate conditions were pritty good and fishable. With an overcast cloudy day, minimal winds, lots of turbalence and white wash right infront of our rock platform conditions were perfect! Anyways started fishing from 0700-0830 the fish would come and go with both of us hooking up within moments of each other, and then it would go quite, and then we would be on again. We ended up with 8 keepers split between the both of us, and released the rest. we caught many little blackfish that were putting up a hell of a fight for their little size. . Its been a while since i was able to head out for a session off the rocks for luderick, and it felt good when a plan came together. It felt good to feel the 'thump thump'. Thanks for reading!
  8. Have had a shimano cazna almost a year now. Doesnt feel as plasticy as the sienna, and it has great smooth drag and casts really well with the extra slant on the spool lip using braid. I used it for mostly sp lure fishing. Its spooled with 6 lb braid and is in 2500 size. Its not bad for its price, and would recommend it over the sienna. Just make sure no sand gets in it or gets soaked in salt water. A good quick rinse with tightened dragafter use would be good. If ur just starting off theres nthing wrong with the sienna as ive seen some decent sized kings caught on them in the size 2500 reel while light spinningoff rocks, so it is a little mighty reel aswel. Its up to your preference, look at them both and see what u like. Both work very well and if taken care of, can last a while. I had the choise of either and i chose the cazna and not looking back.
  9. Hey guys , Ive been fishing for luderick with good results off the rocks of easternsuburbs. I would burley by scraping cabbage off rocks with the cleats. As for river luderick ( parra river, georges, cooks) i was wondering if scraping the green weed of the rocks and using it for burley is effectiv? Im talking about the green carpet short type of weed found along all rocky forshores of these rivers. I know long string weed would be best finely choped and sand mixed, but just wanted to know if the carpet greeny weed is effective in any way? It seems as if this weed is really really short string weed, as some areas are really really short, and some are starting to gain length. Wanted to get into river luderick fishing as its closer to home plus the kiddies. I have a few spots sussed out but not yet have had a go. Any tips would be appreciated aswell!
  10. There are some super high quality pfd originating from japan and korea which have integrated pockets for your little tackle gadgets and that. Only place i know that has them is campsie tackle store. Very high quality stuff but not inflatable. Also very handy with the additional pockets. Brands include nissin, daiwa, shimano, HDF. Not common in AUS, but very effective.
  11. It is ay, on first sight thaught of a brea...... Nope its a tarwine! I usually catch small baby ones, but never as big as this before. In future will be letting them swim, both bream and tarwine. Only kept em for the mrs. I was hoping to land a smaller bream for the table but it didnt show up, so its a shame the big girls had to end up on the plate. Im real keen on catch n release.
  12. Went for a quick session this morning. started fishing at 545 finished at 830. berleyd hard with sand bread tunaoil and string weed. Was in search of bream, drummer, ludrick. bait: white bread, string weed. Used a blackfish rig with 12 lb fc leader, size 8 mustad. First spot didnt produce any downs what so ever so i moved 100m near some structure and continued to burley. Love that feeling of striking on a down. Dropped the first fish due to poor netting skills, and landed one tarwine (340mm), and a bream (380mm) both on bread. Also missed allot of downs. Heres some pics!
  13. Hey mate i baught it a few months ago. But they always have a kayak sale. Ifnur patient wait, if not hurry into the boating camping fishing store for the sit on top kayak cos it seems a better quality than the other ones at the 'snake' store. Good luck!
  14. use dto go ther all the time when i was younger. 10 years ago. allots changed, resorts being built, no access to big dunes, some of the smaller dunes are flattened out, just not the same. but for fishing, cant really advise about times, tides, moon etc..... but last time i was there caught flatties, bream and salmon on pilchard cubes, simple running sinker rig. the salmon were literally jumping out of the water 20 meters away from us, and the was in the middle of winter. bring some slugs n mettals and mabe light gear to play with the salmon. sorry i cant give you tips on jews n that, but is a great days fishing. you wont go home dissapointed if you use simple methods and know what your doing. good luck! tell us how you go! fished middle of day on rising tide, in a gutter. you could literally see schools of slmon in the waves, and schools of whiting in the shallows. cant wait to go back! cheers, Sean221
  15. ive had a look around for some cheap fishing kayaks around sydney. for around300-350 theres a sit ontop kayak that you can set up your own rig with rod holders and what not. seemed prity good for its price. its at a boating camping and fishing store if u know what i mean. also i baught a sit in kayak and put flush rod holder in it cost 250 which is pritty good for a first yak. this was at a store named after one of the biggest snakes in the world. if u know what i mean. wait for sales and that and im sure u can get a good deal. dont forget to add paddles to that price which is around30-100 bucks. and a life vest 30-100 aswell. goodmluck! -Sean221
  16. You know what, when i did bring these fish up i wasnt sure if it was the black drummer or luderick, due to the faded colours and blotchy look i took it for a luderick that just adapted to the rocky bottom. It does have a more round shape than the luderick though. Thanks for the clarification
  17. Alright! Last night decided to go for a quick morning session (after asking the big boss), and decided to try my luck again by targetting some luderick. I set up my rig during the night of 6 lb braided mainline, 8 lb fc shock leader leading to a small float, then the swivel, down to 4 lb fc leader. (see my mistake?) then to a size 8 mustad snelled hook. so 5 am got up got changed and headed out. i was really hoping this session would be a good one because i hardly get the time to fit in a session due to family commitments, so this had to count. got to the spot and with the tide about to peak at 8 am, i chose a spot where allot of white wash was, preapared my burley of bread and tuna oil mixed with some sea water and sand, and began to burley bomb hard!. anyways usually at this spot i cn see straight through the water but today the water was abit choppy. i didnt have time to get some green weed, so i used the good old loaf of bread, and it did pay off. first cast i waited for the first down, 2 minutes went and then BANG! in an instant the float dragged under the water so bloody quick, that instantly, and i mean instantly the leader snapped at the swivel. hmmmmm there goes my only float. but in amazement of what just happened i was screaming and swearing WHAT THE F%^&K WAS THAT!.....i was so pumped up even thoug i lost my rig. so no float... hmmmm. i shouldve checked my knots, or mabe upped the leader. continuing to burley, i decided to ru a hookn straight through from the 6lb leader with a small split shot for abit of weight, abuot 70cm from the hook. again used the bread and casted in the zone. i found myself always having to rebait, but i didnt mind. then after 25 minutes of casting and rebaiting and casting.... BANG! i was on!!!!! the fish faught like hell, and i knew it was a good one. i havnt felt this feeling in ages! cheering, i controlled the fish out of the reef and rocky bottom and a few minutes later i found myself learning how to net a fish with rod in hand and net in other. Thank god no one was there becasue i looked like a damn fool and screaming like a bitch hoping not to drop the fish. silver flashes up at the surface and up came a very nice bream. went around the low 30cm, and was stoked about that. The process continued, and i also bagged my first ever Luderick! cheering!! even though it was a small one, i still feel that i accomplished it, even with a simple rig as this. as the session went on, ive learnt when to strike. it feels so crazy knowing that after a strike a fish is on, drag screaming! rod bending! pivoting the rod in the hope of the fish steering away from the rock! what more could you want! over the next hour i caught more blackfish, and another 2 bream. kept the 3 bream and let the luderick set free. but i did keep one luderick that was the bigger of the catch. Im sure that if i did still have my float i wouldve caught more fish due to the hook snagging countless times onto the bottom. next time ill bring more, and up the leader. over all i caught around 10 fish and kept 4, and released the other 6. all of the keepers were between 30-35 cm. Cheering! i stopped fishing at 730, so i spent a good hour and a half. not bad for a morning session! The mrs just finished cooking the bream, filo style. was great and fresh! called the old man and he was excited too, and next time he told me to bleed the black fish as it tast better bled. Thanks for the reading guys! sorry for the long post. this just made my week! now i have an excuse to the mrs to go fishing! haha. Sean221.
  18. Gota have the rod holders! Haha, mlove it! Good luck with it!
  19. Hey mate irecently just baught a kayak for 250 sit in. I wanted a sit on top but the old man ( whom i was sharing the yak with) wanted a sit in so since he way paying for it i let this one pass. Im just in the middle of thinging of idead to customise it to suit it for fishing. Gonna put rod holders and fit a milk crate on the back. There was a sit on top kayak for 300 which is a bargin but had no fishing accessories fitted which you would have to fit on yourself, but its not hard at all to do that. This deal was just unmissable so if your keen on getting a cheap kayak sit on top for fishing id go for it now as 300 bucks is affordable for a firt timer kayaker. Pm me as to where i found this bargin but its no secret as the store name is some thing of one of the biggest snakes in the world located in the a shop region. Hint hint. Ontop of the 300 u have to include pdf and paddle wich would be an extra 100 at cheapest, but i found a real cheap fishing vest pdf on online shop with all the compartments n that which is way more convenient Cheers, Sean221
  20. Hey raiders, finally i got the chance to go with the old man to look at some cheap kayaks. went past one that was 300 dollar SIT ON TOP kayak, which i wanted, and the old man wanted the SIT IN 250 dollar kayak. since he was paying i said okay just get the sit in kayak. now we went back and fourth about me installing rod holder on the kayak and hes there telling me.... NO SON JUST USE A BLOODY HAND LINE. hahaha. anyways he ended up saying 'JUST DO WHATEVER YOU WANT MATE!' SO! i need some advice about what i can and cant do with this sit in kayak for it to be fishable. im planning to install 2 flush mounts on the back, and figure out how to attatch a milk crate on the back using the slings and elastics. Heres a picture of the yak (not flash at all just a basic first kayak) and gimme some ideas! Im only going to be hitting calm rivers and esuarys and bays that are flat, so in mind i have georges river, cooks river, botany bay, when the weather is right. I have still yet to learn so much about kayak fishing as i have never done it before. Thanks for the read guys!! Im real excited for when i do get the time to go out and try the new yak!
  21. Okay i know ive posted before but i just cant get my mind around it. Today i baught 300 m powerr pro braid for $50. 15lb Now i need a reel to fit to my 10 foot light/medium starlo classix surf rod. I do have a budget, but was thinking about if i should spend the extra $$. I will be mainly using it for lures off the beach, blades, metals, sp, etc. I was thinking going cheap and getting a sienna 4000. Seems the perfect size for the type of fishing im doing, but really havnt feltit out yet on my rod. Im also interested in other brand in the same size. I want a reel to be reliable in the surf that cn handle abit of salt water splash and sand. I will be targeting sambos, taylor, etc from the surf. Cheers for the read guys! And i do have a budget. Dont want to spend too much.
  22. Hey mate, Ive fished there a few times at bay view park.if ur bait fishing, burley up and use unweighted bait down the burly trail. You can cast out furthur if u like and can run into flatties, bream taylor etc... But i havnt caught anything to brag about. With softplastics, ive worked the shoreline and bumped into undersized flatties and a few bream, this is the place where i started with sp, and always had a result within the few hours ive spent working the shoreline with sp. bloodworm wriggler as always the way to go, with a jighead to suit conditions. Havnt been there for a while as ive moved houses and head down to georges river as it is closer. Ive been to bayview early in the morning and seen lots of movement near the boat ramp, first cast i usually get a hit. Lots of myllet jumping there aswell. Anyways see how you go. Fresh bait is always best. Fish light as possible. You will get undersized fish here. Cheers. Sean221
  23. Hey mate, thanks for the reply Ive got a shimano cazna 2500 just baught a few months ago. I baught it from some boating camping fishing store but have lost the reciept. I might bring it there and ask about it, hopefully they can replace it without the reciept. If not ill have to try mr king spoolds way. Wet fine grit sand paper! Cheers Sean221
  24. Hey guys, Ive found that ive chpped the lip of the spool of my fishing reel, which drastically effects my casting distance. Any reccomendationd on how to smoothen out the lip?
  25. Thats a nice fish mate! Its funny my sons name is seth aswell and hes 11 months old and only when i bring him fishing is when i get a decent fish on. Hes my lucky charm! CNt wait till hes older and walking, i can then bring him to the beach to get some real action!
