  1. Thanks.. That's what I thought. So it's not a specific measurement or rating etc though? Would there be a big size difference between a 2500 and 4000 at all (I'm looking at upgrading my shimano baitrunner)... I checked the actual reel weight and its hardly anything. I've only got a rod rated at 2-4kg though (a t-curve 702xl)

  2. Mate, my 20c worth after reading what you want describes my boat exactly. A haines hunter 470breeze. It has a cuddy cabin, 75hp mercury. I fish everywhere in it. Rivers, lakes and ocean and I also take the kids tubing and skiing behind it. The hull design is second to none and you wont find a more versitile boat anywhere. A second hand one about 2007 model will cost about 20k.

Would never trade my boat for anything. Good luck deciding.

    Cheers scratchie!!!

Thanks - I'll look into those ;) still waiting on my money anyway so not like I don't have time to decide lol
  3. Hey mate,

If you're new to boating I would go second hand first. There are a lot of things that you will learn on the water and maybe have little incidents like running aground, hitting a jetty or trailer etc. well that was me :P but you wouldn't feel as bad on a second hand boat.

If you are worried about having motor issues etc, just get a fairly modern one, second hand.

My opinion anyway. Good luck :)

Thanks :) If it were just me I definitely would but my partner has a stack of experience with all things boating (except being able to choose one). He will be handling all that and ill be doing the fishing ;)

We are now contemplating used though if we can get a good enough saving. Hopefully our money comes thru soon though cos I can't wait to get out on the water!

  4. Perhaps a bow rider, has the front bow section that you can lounge around in.

Thanks for the reply. We were initially thinking of a bowrider but then decided we'd prefer some protection from the elements.

You do make a valid point though :)

  5. And not sure if it makes any difference but I'd mainly bait fish still, although probably start experimenting with some plastics and hard bodied lures eventually too!

  6. Oh yeah, damn.. Thought I had it all covered ;)

I'm more than happy just to explore rivers, bays and lakes. I've only been on a boat once (in my entire life), so it'll take a bit of getting used to.

I really just want something comfortable and stable that will get me into the better water and away from the crowds on land!

And the tow vehicle is a kj jeep cherokee, so don't think we will have any trouble at all with that aspect.

  7. Hi everyone,

I'm looking at buying my first boat and stuck on what would best suit! My head is swarming with info.

It's just my partner, myself and my puppy so have been looking at something around 4.5-5m.

We are hoping to buy brand new and aim to spend between $20 - $30 000.

So far I really like the look of the quintrex 481 coast runner.

Also tossing up the idea of a half/cuddy cabin because my partner doesn't fish and thinks it could be comfier at times to lay in there rather than just sit in the seat!

Any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated ;)

  8. I was using a 1/0 circle, at this size I don't think brand will matter that much and they will be marked as circle hooks on the pack.

As for do you strike when using circle hooks? No, just let the fish hook itself.

Thanks heaps for the info :)

  9. Can either of u recommend a good brand of circle hooks? And is that what they actually say on the pack? Also what size would you generally use to target bream of this size?

Oh and one last question.. Do u still strike/set the hook when using these?

  10. Well it was so weird.. 1st off a porcupine fish, then a couple of baby snapper, a just legal bream, a tailor of approx 25cm and then lastly a flattie that woulda been over 50cm. I've always found flatties to be a dead weight so had no idea what this one was cos it was starting to take line! But yeah, considering I've always found narrabeen really boring it was quite a shock lol

  11. You might want to try a bit of beach fishing around Northern Beach es ( north narra ) as i seem to get a few fish every time. For Land Based in Pittwater try the non surf side of Palm beach and wade out a bit and use some SP and ganged pilchards if you want. Try around the marinas as they can hold some good kings.

Thanks heaps for that.. I only had an hour or 2 of daylight left yesterday so figured I'd head to somewhere I knew and save pittwater for another day. And I'm still in shock! I caught more fish at narrabeen in that 2 hrs than I ever have lol

  12. Some bream do have stripes, but not always as noticeable as that one.

The bream has a pointier nose and mouth, whereas the tarwhine has a more rounded head and non pointy nose. Keep posting photos and some one will I.D. them for you if you don't know. Fishraider is full of know-it-alls. :074:

Lol thanks so much for that :) I just feel a bit silly posting such basic stuff.. But considering I knew absolutely nothing less than 2 years ago I guess it's not too bad!

That makes a lot more sense about the shape difference between tarwhine and bream, thanks :) so far I think I've caught one tarwhine. Just gotta have a better look at all my pics now

  13. go download navionics for iphone it shows everything its a GPS on your phone but it chews up your battery last time i used mine i was at lake entrance on the central coast i left the app running forgot all about it 2 weeks later i open up the app and its been tracking my tracks all around sydney and back from the central coast lol :biggrin2: cost about $15 but once u install the app its free to use

Thanks for that :) I'll see if I can find anything for free that does the job, otherwise ill give it a go. I find all maps drain battery really bad. I make sure I close google/apple maps straight away when I'm done for that reason lol

  14. Hi. Just wondering if anyone knows of other good apps that allow you to see a satellite image? I fish land based and used to use google maps to try and gauge where the drop offs, deeper water was etc. With the upgrade to apple maps though the view of the water doesn't seem as detailed :(
