  1. IMO a 4wt for Carp is too light, I would recommend at least a 6wt, even a 7wt.
  2. Lol...Possibly, but I think as for stocked Dams, its fine. As for rivers, yes... I think I'll stop there!
  3. I happened to be there one day when fisheries were releasing some fingerlings, so I asked a few questions. The people at Bathurst fisheries & the hatcheries are pretty happy to share any stocking info as well.
  4. I think we owe a debt to Frank Buckland & Francis Francis too, whose generosity has provided a lasting legacy of exceptional Trout fishing, here in Australia & New Zealand.
  5. Talk about not giving up on a vision. Can you imagine the heartbreak the first two times, and were not talking a quick process here! Ever since I Iearn't the history behind the introduction of Trout into Australia, I often say a quiet thank you to James Youl. For if it were not for this man, and the people around him, we would not be enjoying the fruits of their labor, Trout!
  6. Hi Royce, I've not heard of that book. Check this out: http://www.atfonline.com.au/History%20of%20Trout%20in%20Australia.pdf James Youl is the Man! Cheers, Chris
  7. The point you made regarding the relation of where the eye sits to the mouth is not always clear, and in my book not an accurate way to distinguish between the two salmonoids. Regarding there being no spots on the adipose fin and tail of a Brown Trout, that is also not an accurate sign. A lot of Brown Trout which I have caught have spots in the adipose fin, and running up the top edge of the tail, even further into the tail itself.
  8. Hi Luc, I can confidently say without any hesitation that the fish you have there is a Brown Trout. The color those particular Brownies have is due to their diet and the depth/area of water they live in. I would say, that fish and others with a very silver "sea run" appearance in TCD are feeding on bait fish, and probably yabbies, which gives them a very creamy under belly, and silver flanks. I am a regular up at the ol Thommo, and have caught countless brown Trout there. Some are dark Brown, some are creamy tan, others a bar of silver. There is a real diversity in their appearance. As Matt has pointed out, the tail of a salmon is generally forked, and there is no record of Salmon being stocked in TCD. I am familiar with the stocking program there, and can confirm this to be true. Great fish Mate, but 100% Loch Leven strain. That will open a whole new can of worms lol...All Brown Trout in Australia are infact from the Loch Leven strain in Scotland. So yeah, Brown trout without doubt. Cheers, Chris
  9. I guess on a kayak though you would want to keep it in the underwater housing just in case you went tipsys. So yeah, it's not bad IMO.
  10. I got the head mount for the Sony Cam, which doesn't have to be in its waterproof housing, which is excellent. The audio is top notch, and of course cracking HD video. I then quickly change the scene to water and pop it in the underwater housing and I'm straight underwater. The audio is pretty good too in the housing, plus there is a new door with two small homes for improved audio waterproof to 10 metres which is great too. I honestly don't find the one button record in the housing an issue, plus you can access some settings from wifi anyway.
  11. I find the wifi streaming does work on the Sony underwater, but only for around 5 seconds. It's a case then of lifting out of the water for it to re connect, then go back under. Wifi obviously struggles to work through water.
  12. Fair comment, however, when I was tossing up between the Go Pro Black and the Sony, the reviews and testing leaned more towards 45 minutes tops on full settings with the Go Pro Black. Which would give you 1.5 hours with the battery pack, and just under 2.5 hours with another battery in reserve. If your happy to shell out another $100 plus on top of the $450 (Go Pro Black) for the extra batteries that's cool, just thought I'd throw that out there as well. I can confirm that I use the Sony pretty much all day off and on, and rarely have need to change over the battery, getting between 2-3 hours use from the one battery. Which ever way you go, imo, they are both good and have pros and cons.
  13. Hi there, I decided to go for a Sony "Action Cam" over a Go Pro. Reasons being: 1/. The battery life lasts 2-3 times longer than the GP. 2/. As opposed to the GP under saturating the colours, the AC over exposes, which in my opinion is the better of the two. 3/. For the AC wifi version (ability to live stream to your iPhone) it's cheaper by around $100 than the GP Black. 4/. Watching a side by side YouTube comparison, the verdict after numerous tests was the Sony AC was overall the pick out of the two. That said, the GP has a better range of mounts at the moment, however Sony are getting more available all the time. I recently upgraded the waterproof housing to the flat door, and for underwater footage it's excellent. I got the camera for fishing, and to me battery life was a big advantage with the Sony AC over the GP. Overall I'm very happy with the Sony AC. I am in favour of the GP too, but I think for the cost, the battery life, the saturation, the Sony is the one to go for. Not to mention Sonys famous anti shock stabilisation. I would imagine at some stage in the not too distant future, a brand will come out that captures the best of all the leading action cams. As for today, I think Sony is the way to go. Cheers, Chris
  14. Hi Matt, good work Mate! On a hard body too!!! We bumped into you as you made your way around the other side. My Mate got a Rainbow, measured the same as yours 62cm. Your not wrong about the weather, it turned out to be a gorgeous day!
  15. Good onya Fabian, Jesus would be proud of ya!
  16. The Daiwa Fuego reel is the same as the Daiwa Luvias reel. I have the Luvias reel and love it! My mate has the Lox 1-3kg rod, great rod. They are however prone to the tip snapping, so be careful not to fish too heavy lures.
  17. I second the H14R!!! The best headlamp out on the market I believe. You can pick them up now for around $130 from authorized re sellers. Make sure you get the rechargeable one. One charge lasts a good 4 hours on max power, or you use the energy saving mode, or dim mode and get at least twice that!
  18. Please pm me too as I have a fly rod which needs replacing with a full set of snake guides. Sydney area. Cheers, Chris
  19. Talk about finesse lure fishing! We'll done!
  20. Hi Raiders, To add to what Royce has very timely pointed out, I have seen several cars full of anglers arrive over the so called "back entrance" behind the quarry over the past month. I have also witnessed fires, with several "fireplaces" present around the banks of the dam, which I have tried to dismantle. The amount of litter that I have seen around the place, especially the quarry has been very bad. The amount of fishing line left tangled up in a mess on the banks too has been appalling. If you or I see any of the above mentioned, if we could do our best to pick it up it would certainly be a good thing for us all. What this kind of activity highlights is the people responsible really don't care for the place and have no respect for the rules. I know someone whom works for Delta who told me that if we see any irresponsible activities to contact the fisheries officer Pat on- 0488 220 443. There is also going to be new signage put up around the so called "back entrance", stating that the dam has only the one point of entry via the car park on Willow vale Road. At the end of the day, fishing is supposed to be enjoyed, and like Royce said, a polite word should be all it will take to enlighten anyone doing the wrong thing. I was actually talking with a nice young bloke, fishing, whom brought a push bike up to the dam not too long ago. I politely advised him that your not allowed to bring in a push bike. He was very apologetic and sincere, and said he wouldn't do it again. Tight Lines!
  21. Hi Shred, Are you serious? Mate how did you come by this post, I'd love to see it. I know a few people at Delta, who also know the fisheries man for the area. Man this has gotta stop.
  22. Hi Stan, My Mate bought a saltwater line which he fishes regularly in freshwater, so yeah they are good for both. As Royce said, go Dacron for your backing line, in the 25-30lb region. (I think its sold mostly as 30lb these days) If your not sure what knot is best to attach the fly line to your backing line, depending on whether there is an open loop on the fly line, in which case you could do a loop to loop connection, I actually prefer the nail knot. The best advice I could offer you regarding casting, is to stop your forward cast at 10 o'clock, and your back cast at 2 o'clock. Also, keep your forearm straight, i.e. don't bend your wrist. Check out Lefty Kreh online, he has some great instructional casting video's. Cheers, Chris
  23. Great work Bob, so happy for you Guy's. God bless you Robbie!
