  1. Fished port today for zeros. Very disappointed. Water was 24.4deg calm, little wind. Couldn't find bait anywhere. I'm thinking the season over up here! But the weather tomorrow is looking outstanding, so maybe one more go!!!

  2. Hey All,

After catching large numbers of small Yellowfin we had the opportunity to try the many different ways in which to cook them but after much experimenting these three methods were by far my favourite ways to cook/prepare them.

So I took the time to sit down and write out a recipe for each way.

Let me know how you like your tuna!!

  5. As the fishing has been ordinary to say the least the weather has been playing ball so the scent blazer crew got together and headed out in the search of a marlin or anything that would take a lure! The past few trips had seen us work the northern grounds for zeros, so after looking at the charts we decided to head south and work the southern grounds.

    DSC00002.JPG

Sydney Storm Building out at sea

The plan was to run out to the Botany Wide FAD than out to the plonk hole, work that area whilst looking for bait and anything fishy then head north to the 12 mile and see if we could raise a striped marlin...

After picking up the crew remainder of the Scent Blazer Crew we cruised up the harbour where we picked a light spread of Scent Blazer Nano's and Smalls in sardine, mackerel and purple frigate patterns in slant heads and pushers then we loaded them with pilchards, mackerel and yellowtail, as the weather turned for the worse with some of the darkest clouds I've seen roll over the harbour we added LED and glow sticks to our lures to make the lures more visible.

    DSC00108.JPG

Heading for the eye of the storm...

    DSC00218.JPG

Just loaded this small Evil slant head Scent Blazer with fresh Slimy Mackerel.

On our way to the FAD the water changed from pea soup green to clean, clear and electric blue! With the dark clouds getting darker and heavier we continued south until the weather caught up to us, and boy it caught us, visibility was down to the bow sprit! We couldn't see the buoy until we were basically on top of it. The first pass resulted in a hook up that lasted a few seconds before the hook pulled, as we passed it a second time all we could see were mini dollies jumping around the lures.

    DSC00289.JPG

Perfect conditions to be fishing the FAD's, pity about the lack of fish!!

We headed towards the plonk hole where we found bait, a current break and 23.6 degrees but no predatory fish! Where are all the fish?? After working the area for some time we didn't sound or see a fish so he headed into 80 fathoms and headed north.

    GP040001_21.46.37.jpg

How good is this!! Four lures cleanly in shot, these troll pro housings are excellent!!

Soon after we came across a current line with a slight temperature break but visually it was very distinct with no current and heaps of bait on the inside and the outside had 0.5 knots of current pushing south. We worked the current line north past the 12 mile and up to long reef wide where we decided to turn on the current and work the current line south back to the Botany Wide FAD...

On our way we came across heaps of bait and the odd micro dolphin fish but still no joy... Once we reach the FAD we did a few passes but they still weren't interested so we dropped a few baits to see what was below and soon after we hooked up what we thought was a dollie but to our surprise we hooked an unknown fish, any ideas?

    DSC00272.JPG

Looks like a kingfish with the tail scoots like a tuna? any ideas?

Looks like a pelagic but I've never seen one? Who can ID it?

After not being able to tempt a dollie we picked up again and trolled towards Sydney for zeros until the darkness came over us... It seems as though this is how our season is going to be! All we can do is continue to get out and search the sea...

    DSC00326.JPG

The Conditions made up for the lack of fish... nothing like flat seas, a beautiful sunset and good mates!

  6. As Sydney was holding the Little Audrey Peter Goadby Memorial Tournament over the past weekend we decided we would get out among with the other 40 odd boats fishing the tournament and see if we could raise a few fish for ourselves.

    DSC00021.JPG

Picking up the crew before re fuelling.

The predicted conditions raised our hopes and the hopes of many others I’m sure… light winds, no swell and blue water was the prediction for the weekend, we were just hope the fish got the memo and come to the party. Our plan was to head northeast via the Sydney FAD and then the Manly Hydraulics swapping the lures in 80 fathoms.

As we ran up the harbour the conditions were perfect, it was like a mirror, absolutely no wind!! Our first stop was to grab the crew and then fuel the boat before heading to north head were we would set our spread…

    DSC00034.JPG

Making our way up the harbour, no boats besides ferries to be seen

After approaching north head we loaded the chambers in our Scent Blazers with Pilchards and mackerel, the plan was to run our spread behind the Trollpro to capture anything that comes up on the lures. We are now able to successfully run 4 lures perfectly in shot!! So we ran 5 smaller Scent Blazers to and around the FAD and Hydraulics buoy than add a few larger Scent Blazers once we got into slightly deeper water.

As we rounded north head we were greeted by working birds so with the lures in the water our anticipation grew but as we go closer we could see schools of slimies with no apparent predators… this continued for several hundred meters.

    DSC00174.JPG

Blue warm water full of bait but no fish to be seen...

After unsuccessfully working the bait in close we headed for the FAD with two high-speed lures out in the event we crossed anything on our way. A mile before the buoy out went the trollpro and we set the spread around it. The first pass yielded zeros as did the second and third but we could see micro dollies jumping around, when I say micro I mean 30cms!! So off to the Hydraulics Buoy a mile nor east, the same situation played out with micro dollies jumping around showing absolutely no interest in our offerings.

    DSC00257.JPG

The FAD resembled a carpark like situation...

    DSC00171.JPG

Our troll cam out rigger, this helps get the camera in the clear water for a clean shot!!

With the water an electric blue, 23.8 degrees and full of bait and current lines it looked extremely fishy!! We had changed the spread and pushed noreast in search of Mr Marlin… bait littered the oceans surface with frequent temp breaks but still, no predatory fish to be seen until we got a strike!! After a short tussle we boated this small striped tuna!!

    DSC00414.JPG

A nice stripy took a sardine lure loaded with sardine, they cant resist the bait in the lures...

    DSC00443.JPG

This Stripy couldnt resist eating a Scent Blazer loaded with bait even though he was full!!

As we continued into the afternoon the weather got better but the fishing didn’t, and into the night we trolled for not much more than a small stripie…

Seems as though we weren’t the only boat going relatively fishless, many boats fishing the tournament didn’t see a fish. It’s been a hard season but seems the water has turned up with bait and hasn’t changed in a week; maybe the fish aren’t far behind. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

    DSC00559.JPG

With all the slimey mackerel in the area we decided to load a Scent Blazer Green Mackerel with actual pieces of fresh mackerel!!

  7. "The bait was flighty and spread out but we worked our Scent Blazers into the dark without as much as a strike, maybe the water pushing up the hill has something to do with it, or is it this big Eddie off Sydney? "

    Correct...

there is a large upwelling sitting about 70km offshore from Wollongong swirling the current running downhill clockwise around it and then pushing back uphill past Sydney coast in closer

    See pic attached!

Nice, Thanks rexaway1234, seems like its not budging!!

  8. Still a good day to be on the water. Where are all the fish but? I'm praying that is going to be a LATE season rather than a dismal season. Are you happy with the troll pro my mates thinking about getting the housing. It's very inconsistent ATM . All we can do is pray to the fish gods?. Better luck next time . Evan

P.s can you pm me where you got your LEDs from please?

It sure was mr.e.d, your guess as to where all the fish are is as good as mine. At this stage It might still fire as I heard port had a few good days of solid fish and in numbers. The troll pro is great!! Takes a little setting up but we can run 4 to 5 lures in shot! The quality is far better than the troll cam and with the extended battery and extra memory cards we can run it all day!!

I've been praying to the fishing and weather gods to bring us some fish!! I'll send you a link where you can get them shortly.

  9. After a weekend of drinking, eating and festive activities we decided to head to sea and see what we could find, the weather prediction was great and the Sea surface charts showed promising water close to the coast so out we went!! With a plan of checking the local buoys, The FAD and Manly Hydraulics buoy and head a little east to where we hooked that marlin last week.

    DSC02838.JPG

Rounding South Head to beautiful conditions

Coming up the harbour was a mission as the whole Sydney sailing fraternity decided to take to the harbour all at once and take up any possible square foot of water in the main channels. I wouldn’t like to be a captain of the Manly ferry as this would be a nightmare to navigate all day, back and forth…

    post-22587-0-72597900-1364946808_thumb.jpg

Conditions are great but the fish didn't want to play ball

After passing the many sailboats we loaded the two different spreads with bait, we decided to run small lures (Nano sardines, pinks, skipjack and purple frigate) till we got into deeper water. So we punched it up to north head where we were greeted by blue, warm water that felt fishy!! There were birds working bait from the outside of north head so out went the lures as the water temp was 25.6 but as we worked the inshore bait hoping for a small black Marlin the signs of predatory fish became merely a wish…

    post-22587-0-38533400-1364947320_thumb.jpg

Dragging lures around tightly packed bait hoping for a Baby Black Marlin

After coming up with zeros on that bait we headed towards the Sydney FAD, as we approached the FAD we could see micro dollies jumping around up current. The water temp was 25.8 and blue but the current was running up the hill, from south to north. Seems like there is a big Eddie of Sydney. After we had passed the buoy from every direction for no joy we headed northeast to the Manly Hydraulics Buoy where it the situation was a mirror image.

    post-22587-0-02635400-1364947276_thumb.jpg

Choosing the spread for the fish your targeting is hard especially if you have too many lures to choose from...

The current was running up the hill at about 3.5 knots, warm and blue with only micro dollies, where are all the big ones? My guess is you’ll find the bulls on Flotsam… so with several passes from every possible direction without a sniff from these little fish we headed nor east to the marks we caught the last beakie a week ago. There were current lines as far as they eye could see, the temperature varied from 25.1 to 25.8 over such a small distance with bait in every direction. The weather was pristine with 5knots of ENE and a very lazy swell made it enjoyable. All the indicators to marlin were there, nice clean water, bait, temperature breaks, current breaks and even the right type of birds!!

    post-22587-0-16465700-1364947365_thumb.jpg

Running the TrollPro is a great way to see fish come up on your lures but also see how your lures swim according to the conditions.

We worked the area for a number of hours as the radio chatter or lack of indicated that there wasn’t much happening wider, so why leave bait to find bait right?

It was hard to believe we couldn’t raise or mark a fish, it seemed almost to perfect of a situation…

    post-22587-0-94287700-1364947392_thumb.jpg

Make sure your teaser is well secured as marlin and other game fish don't mind having a go at the teaser, check out that spray!!

The bait was flighty and spread out but we worked our Scent Blazers into the dark without as much as a strike, maybe the water pushing up the hill has something to do with it, or is it this big Eddie off Sydney? Who knows, all I know I did not hear of a fish caught, hooked raised or even seen yesterday.

  10. Went out yesterday with my wife and two eldest boys(12 & 8), along with the other 10 million tourists up here, in search of one thing Marlin!!! We left shoal bay in my Haines 470 and straight out to lighthouse and set the spread. Once we hit the 60m mark there were pilchards everywhere and I mean everywhere. I thought this was a good sign and with the smooth seas, anticipation was high. We headed north from the light and zig zagged the 80-100m mark. After about an hour I noticed a black just cruising the top of the water so I decided to circle him. On the second pass bang and the long corner goes off. The kids are jumping around the boat and my wife decides to get the video going. After what was a relatively short fight on my tyrnos 50, the little black puts on a jumping display which was a great site to see for us all. After taking some photos, we released the little fella and he swam off in great condition.

It was a great day on the water and another target ticked off for team scratchie!!!

    attachicon.gifimage.jpgattachicon.gifimage.jpgattachicon.gifimage.jpg

    Tight lines,

    Cheers scratchie!!!

awesome work Scratchie!! persistence sure pays off!

congrats to you and the crew.

  11. Haven't been out for a few weeks last time we headed out in the boat that big swell came through so we only went to longy and came back into the heads, by the looks of it we'll give out wide a miss tomorrow as well. Good work on the marlin

thanks mate was good to get one!! yea the water and weather seems unpredictable at the moment...

  12. The day started as any other; we left the berth and headed for north Sydney where we picked up the rest of the crew then off to the fuel wharf. A quick fuel up and all the gear sorted we loaded our Scent Blazers chambers with bait and headed up the harbour.

    DSC03067.JPG

Picking the crew up for another days game fishing...

As we rounded north head we were greeted by excellent conditions that felt fishy!! Our plan was to run north east via the Sydney FAD then pass the Manly Hydraulics Buoy and head north east in search of what seems like the elusive marlin...

As we approached the Sydney FAD the water seemed green and lifeless, no birds, no bait and as we passed the FAD, no dolphinfish... Seems as though the dollies this year are only holding on floating structure drifting in the current as a posed to fix structure like the FADs.

    DSC03082.JPG

Pushing up the harbour heading to sea...

With no joy on the FAD we headed nor’ east to the Manly Hydraulics Buoy and with in a mile of the buoy we dropped in a range of Scent Blazer lures, from Nano's to Smalls in a variety of head shapes to colours, purple frigates, sardine, pinks and evils to name a few...

Our first pass resulted in zeros, not even a sign of life, the water was still green and the fish were not to be seen...

    DSC03448.JPGDSC03459.JPG

See the bait coming out of the chamber, how could a marlin resist that!!

Scratching our heads we decided to swap the lures to a spread of medium to large scent blazers and set the Trollpro in the spread and then head nor’ east in the search of a marlin.. A few miles east of the Manly Hydraulics Buoy the water became extremely fishy with current breaks everywhere and large schools of bait, we knew we were going to get a strike and we weren't wrong!

    DSC03142.JPG

Manly Hydraulics Buoy, no Dolphin fish this time...

As we passed over a very distinct current break we noticed a tangle on the trollpro, so whilst we were untangling the two lines the right rigger popped the clip and started to slowly take drag... Now this isn't your usual marlin strike, it seemed really lazy as though he was full!

Probably by the amount of bait in the area is as to why he didn't strike that hard or take that screening run.

    DSC03506.JPG

Note the current where the smooth water meets the choppier water

I've passed heaps of marlin on bait in the past whilst using regular trolling lures and they don't even give the lure a second look but with the Scent Blazer the marlin came up and still had a go at the lure even though he was most probably full, having bait in the lure really does make all the difference, this fish was probably full but it smelt the scent coming out of the back of the lure and switched it on to feeding mode!

After pulling the footage from the Trollpro you can see the marlin coming up behind the lures even in the green water. Seems as though every game fisherman I talk to says you can't catch fish in green water but all our marlin this season have come from green water! If there are signs of marlin or game fish in the area such as bait, current breaks and temp breaks in green water stay there and work the area and see if you can raise a fish. There is no use leaving bait/fish to find bait/fish.

    GOPR0001_Marlin_03.43.1.jpg

Marlin in the spread, in green water.

The need to find blue water seems like a psychological thing amongst fisherman. It also seems confidence is low when fisherman come across green water, we have had heaps of success in dirty/green water, I think that using Scent Blazer lures and teasers will help the fish find your lures and spread as they drop a fishy scent and fish pieces to create a path for the fish to follow back to your boat…

    DSC03721.JPG

Getting those lures in the right position is crucial for marlin to be able to see them.

After 15 minutes on the fish he spat the hook! Maybe he was bill wrapped? Or maybe way just a lazy bite, who knows... We worked the area for an hour or so with no success. The further east we traveled the less fishy it became so we decided to head back in to where we hooked that fish.

We trolled the area as the light disappeared but with no joy we headed in towards Sydney harbour. The fishing seems slow at the moment but with a little patience, dedication and the right lures you'll come across the fish.

  13. With the weekend’s weather, particularly Sundays weather being so awful we decided a mid week trip was the go. A quick look at the weather sites, BOM, Seabreeze and Buoy Weather they all said the same thing, great weather!! Now there was only one more thing to check, the Sea surface charts!! A quick look showed a few temp breaks on the other side of the shelf.

Our plan was to run out to the Botany Wide FAD, work that area to see if we could pick up a few Dolphin fish and then head to the shelf, drop a few different size and shape Scent Blazers out and run southeast in search of Mr Stickface…

After picking up the crew from north Sydney we made a quick stop to fuel the boat and then hit the big blue!! Rounding south head there was hardly a ripple to rock the boat, it was simply perfect and the further southeast we travelled the better the conditions and water colour/temp got. It started out green and 23.8 in close and within a few miles it changed to blue and 24.6 degrees. Things were looking up with only 2 miles to the Botany Wide Fad there was a slight north to south current of 1 knot and good, clean water.

    DSC02786.JPGDSC02803.JPGDSC02864.JPG

After receiving our Trollpro and bits and pieces we decided to set it up and run it in the long corner in front of 2 Scent Blazers, one in the long corner and the other off the rigger. Firstly we tried running it off the rigger but its to heavy for the rigger at 8 knots.

    DSC02884.JPGDSC02899.JPG

Troll Pro being ready to be run and Troll Pro on the rigger pulling some serious pressure at 8 knots!!

So we rigged up a little system with a spare fixed head gaff and this worked a treat!!

    DSC02983.JPG

Our Troll Pro set up, far to heavy for the outrigger at 8 knots!

We then put the rest of the spread out, 2 Nano’s one bullet head purple frigate and the other a pusher head in sardine then a Small Evil pusher head and a Small Lumo Slant head. With the spread set we made our first pass, a double hook up on dollies with both fish smashing the Nano’s but they didn’t stick. The second pass was similar with both lures getting hit but again a failed hook up, what’s going on? Small fish is our guess.

After dropping the two fish the other dollies went off the bite so we headed east to the shelf, 0.5 of a mile inside the shelf was a very distinct current break glass like conditions on one side and half a meter of chop on the other. The temp difference between the two was 0.2 degrees so we swapped the lures for bigger Scent blazers, An X-Large Yellowfin Slant head, a Large Green Luminator slant head and left the two on the riggers as they were, we then worked the edge north then south, zig zaging in and out of the current but with no joy we decided to cross the shelf and head south on the outer side of the shelf.

    DSC02901.JPG

Check out that Scent Blazer Teaser smoking away!!

As we crossed the shelf the temp dropped the 0.2 of a degree and stayed 24.0 flat the whole way down the coast, lots of current breaks but no fish!! There were no birds, no bait and no dolphin, barren!! We continued south for another 12 miles but the water and fish condition wasn’t improving so we decided to head into 250fathoms and make our way back up the coast. By this stage the radio chatter stopped and seems we weren’t the only boat noticing the lack of anything fishy…

    DSC02963.JPG

Short Corner- Scent Blazer X-Lagre Yellowfin Tuna Colour Slant Head

As we made our way over the shelf and that current change had pushed away but the water was far bluer inside the shelf. The decision was made to head to the Botany Wide FAD and see if those dollies were still around but on our arrival the current was pushing up the coast, south to north and was fishless! As we trolled our way back to Sydney the sun was falling and the light was disappearing and by the time we got through the harbour it was gone, complete darkness…

The fishing off Sydney and up and down the coast seems extremely hit and miss with a lot of ground needing to be covered to find the fish. The currents seem to be changing daily if not hourly. What’s your thoughts? Do you think it will be a late season or is it not going to come at all?
