  1. Most of the Yellowfin were taken East of Heatons but were pretty sparse only one or two around the Canyons.

cheers, yeah that break at the back of Heatons looks really good. Looks like I found someone who can fish tomorrow so thats where we'll probably head.

  2. sounds like a better day yesterday, we were out on Saturday and there wasn't much caught. We hooked a couple of stripes about 30 miles out but dropped them. Heard the same the best water was about 10 miles east of Heatons.

Do you know where they got the yellowfin?

  3. Well i dont know if thats a myth Scent Blazer, but always this time of year we get them. I Give em away bacause to me they are only good for bait.

it could be a myth or a story, I heard it from a tackle shop owner :)

offshore might not be different, but there are definitely around in plague proportions around Newcastle which is unusual, so something has definitely happened that's brought them in, or it could be part of a bigger cycle like every 10 years there is massive Hairtail run in Newcastle

  4. no way, you caught a hairtail bottom fishing :) There is hairtail everywhere this year, they are still biting in Newcastle apparently. Someone told me its because they stopped the Japanese netting in our waters.

  5. We got out today for a latish start, we hooked 2 stripes in green water around lunchtime but they didn't stick. We got the hook-ups on small break that went up to 22.5 about half way between browns and heatons. We stayed around that area the rest of arvo despite the green water hoping for another, but that was it. We heard later on the radio later that the blue/blue water was about 10 miles east of Heatons, so we probably should have keep tracking east. Oh well, hindsight = 20/20 vision.

If I can swindle a day next week I might try again but go straight for that blue water break east of heatons and spend most of the day along that edge.

Comp on today, from what I heard only 1 stripe and a couple makos were caught out of about sixty boats.

  6. Gday all, went wide today past Heatons and didn't turn a reel. Water varies from 21.5- 24.0 going from bluey green to blue in the process. Current going north at 2 knots. Wind easy 20 knots and dodnt really drop swell up to 2M.

Thats it, going tomorrow so see what happens.

thanks for that, all info is good info :). I finally got my boat back this week so I'm heading out tomorrow for the first time in over a month. My call sign is "Happy Hooker 2" if want to get me on the radio.

    good luck tomorrow

  7. Gday all, what a great day to be on the water. Hardly a breath of wind and the signs of a bright orange glow appearing above the coast.

Absolute perfection greeted us at the heads. Under half a meter swell which continued to the horizon. Water is blue and we had constant 22.5 all day on the shelf. A visible current line at least 50M wide ran east_ west and had a degree drop either side. Devoid of bird life all day, only saw 2 dolphins all day. So that says something although 1 stripie was hooked up on a bottom rig lol another stripey was hooked up by some bloke fishing by himself, didnt here if he landed the fish and that was all on the marlin scene, we trolled from the 12 out for zip.

Once we arrived 38 boats were already sitting on it. Drift was to the nne at .4knot.

Not a great deal happening we landed three gemmies with no real size to them and the biggest silver dory i have seen on a hook. Only saw 1 boat land a blue-eye looked only 6 odd kilo. Had to laugh as we fished near a well known charter boat, now obviously the boys were fishing for fun, only using one electric. Couple of hours later he gets onto the radio talking to another boat and says oh yeah etc etc we bagged out on gemmies and got 3 blue eye..... Yet not one fish went onto their deck!

Thats about it, still a bit early for it to fire but with that much pressure being put on it Browns will never recover. On another front forget tuna they are still down south. Fish of Merimbula today to 60kg. Have seen photos of fish from ulladulla 80-100.

nice fish Fin, looked like great conditions. You should have got on the radio and said you caught 6 Blue Eye :)

Are the Tuna they caught down south Bluefin or Yellowfin? If they are Bluefin we might get a good season, I thought the BF season was a bit short off Sydney last year.

  8. I can't think of anywhere around Sydney where you would get fish like that consistently. I heard that the beaches off Port Stephens is possibly where they shot that footage. The only other place I can think of is the north end of Stockton beach but for sharks not tuna, I know they get a run of White Pointers off the beach there every year. They would be pretty easy to spot from a drone.

There was a segment on a current affair where guys used to paddle out past the breakers at Stockton on their surfboards and drop a mullet right out back then wait in their 4WDS for the hook-ups. But you know what if you could figure out a way to get the bait rig to release you could use the drone to fly the baits out instead of paddling out. You could use that anywhere, rock or beach fishing to get your bait way out further than you could ever cast.

  9. Yeh awesome, thanks for the reply.

I am sort of in the process of acutally making a downrigger.... Long story lol.

So how far from the weight release eye to the Main should I have it?

around 4-6 feet above the weight and about same to the release clip, we don't use a release clip we just have a rubber band attached to a snap swivel. We run the line through the rubber band, so we can let more line out if we want or pull it in. The break away point = the strength of the rubber band.

  10. That's interesting.

Is it practical for any depth?

    Cheers

    Jim

I've only tried it with about 10metres of cord out and worked fine going about 6-8 knots, I'm sure it would be fine going deeper, it would probably ride a bit higher because the cord or rope is thicker than the wire on the downrigger system, but that's about all.

If you trolled slow with a live bait or a squid, I think you could go as deep as you wanted.

  11. *its in the rumour bucket but I will go on with the best I have,

    Commercial

Way out- 2 or 3 thousands

    No info on size

But it's not about where they were its about where they might be soon. We're out Saturday - south

no probs, good luck on Sat, hope you get amongst them, weather looks good. I'm still boatless and too busy, I might try to head out next week, its still 24-25 just east of Heatons.

  12. G'day all,

I have made a few big fish shape down rigger weights. Bought the moulds of ebay and thought they would be good when I finally get a down rigger

I am going fishing Saturday outside and was wondering if anyone has had experience in just using rope, connected from a cleat on the boat to the down rigger weight dropped down to an appropriate depth with the main fishing line attached to the appropriate release release?

Would this work as a temporary solution?

    JA

no problem, that's what we do, we have a cord that goes onto the back cleat

we don't use rope though, we use a thick cord so its a bit thinner than rope and has less drag. But a small diameter rope will do the trick as well.

  13. If they are plastic it would be pointless if I still had the wire cage ones I'd put up a pic of the damage they done to them. A mate has suggested I use PVC pipe and drill holes in it might run with that idea

they're made from a polycarb, I've got some photos somewhere as well where they've ripped apart a plastic container, sounds like you have plan anyway :)

punctured tins of cat food like squidmarks said has also worked well for us

  14. Wollongong to the banks was a desert on Sunday

bummer, i heard from a couple of people that they didn't turn a reel on the weekend either, on the radio they said a few stripes were caught at Norah Canyons and a few dollies were taken off Sydney, i don't know if the dollies had any size to them

  15. It's true! Last Tbft, the record cobia was caught in the same place as the record jew. I've heard of YFT being caught in the bay. 3-4 weeks ago a black marlin was caught off Tomaree heads.

I personally think it's due to the amount of bait that is in the bay. Also the fact that the bay is 2 & 1/2 times the size of Sydney harbour!

You gotta love Port Stephens. :)

that's unreal, it makes sense you just need to be where all the bait fish are and the bigger fish won't be far behind. With a big body of water like that the tide change must be like rapids around the heads and that would be dragging all the small fish out. The pelagics are probably lining up at the heads on every outgoing tide change for a easy feed.

I probably won't have time this year, but I'm gonna try get up there next year around april/may and try for a longtail

  16. Fishing has been good down south, blacks were great around the bay early, some stripes still around, but got into these on the weekend :)

that's a great fish, how far south were you and what water temp?

  17. That's off the beach at hawks nest, I'm pretty sure! Ocean side!

But during mid April and early May longtail and mac tuna are everywhere inside the bay. You can be drifting for flatties and suddenly they are busting up around you. The key is to be in the right place at the right time!

sounds too good to be true, it would be like game fishing in a lake :) they'd be unreal on light gear
