  1. I'll be out tomorrow. How deep you think out of Sydney harbour should I target you think?

the water looks pretty good everywhere. I'd probably do a pass of the fads and fish traps then just keep heading east towards the shelf and beyond until I found that break that's goes from 24 to 27, the current is along the edge of that temp break. If you find it then I'd pace that break or zig-zag along it.

Right now it looks like its about 25 NM directly east of the heads, I don't know how deep that is but its about 5 miles past the shelf. It could move a lot by tomorrow, closer in or further out.

Other than that, 12 mile, browns, bait station, shelf, fads are all pretty good beats, It's hard to say

    Good luck

  2. Heading out Monday and Tuesday and ideas ?? Stick to 70/80fathom line ?

Hopefully we can get some clear sky's and get an accurate SST chart. Hoping to get out either Monday or Tuesday myself. As usual, can't get crew midweek.

this is today, 24 at Browns, the dark red starts at Heatons which is 27. There is a massive current running along the edge of the dark red area, hardly any current inside that.

tomorrow looks unreal, but I can't fish, got way too much work on. Tuesday is a slim possibility for me, let us know if anyone is heading out.

  3. Lol. Now that's funny! Maybe they should make them take photos of the fish with that days paper!

yeah, imagine how the conversation went down between the journalist and the fishermen "so what have you been getting? I got 39.9kg Kingfish at Old Man's Hat today, do you want me send you a photo? nah that's ok I believe you"

Ask MrsSwordfishermen about the lie detector test, it was for a Port Hacking or Botany Bay comp last year. $50K for the largest marlin brought back to scale over 150kg and if you won you needed to pass a lie detector to claim the prize. That's what I heard unless MrSwordfishermen was pulling my leg :)

  4. That sounds great and very exciting. You must be hanging! Fibreglass tank is interesting. Must run a bladder? Why not stainless?

I'm definitely hanging to get it now :)

most of the new boats do fibreglass these days. Its cheaper and structurally stronger because its built into the hull, plus they don't corrode like aluminium. I don't think it has a bladder either, I think its just raw fibreglass

I'm not sure why they would choose aluminium over stainless, you'd have to think stainless would be way better, i'll ask him next time

  5. Very nice feed to come home with. How's your new boat coming?

yeah, Dollies are always good for a feed, I like them a lot

you know that saying “all good things take time,” well they wrote that saying about my boat :)

I had Skype tour of it a few days ago, it’s getting very close now. They put on a couple of ex Maritimo and Riviera guys in December, they seem really good and it seems to be going a lot faster now. They also decided to go a fibreglass fuel tank instead of aluminium which I’m very happy about. Hopefully not too much longer now, you’ll have to come out for a fish when it finally gets here.

  6. That fish would be 12kg at most. My guess is 11kg on proper scales. No where even close to 39.9kg

yeah for sure, its definitely not 39kg, 141cm and it looks fairly lean, so I'd guess somewhere around 12kg as well, but it's pretty decent. Very possible there are much bigger ones down there.

I can't believe that anyone would think that a fisherman would lie or exaggerate in a fishing report :)

  7. We had a bit of a dropathon on Sunday, hooked 5 dollies and 2 marlin but only managed to land 2 dollies. First marlin came straight off, put the line back in the clip and we were on again a few minutes later on the same lure. We had it on for about a minute before it turned 180 and took off in the opposite direction putting a massive bow in the line, I tried desperately to wind on the slack line. But before I could get the line tight again it came leaping out and skidded along the surface, unfortunately it threw the hook. Still, bloody exciting, we got a good look at it, about an 80kg Stripe.

We were about 7-8 miles east of Sydney where the water transitioned from dirty rain water to clean blue water, there was a sudsy line along the edge. We just ran that line for most of the day and pushed out towards the shelf around midday. Water temp was as high as 24 in places.

Wind started picking up in the early arvo so we started trolling back, got a double hook-up on Dollies about 10NM out. Dropped one and landed one that went around 6kg. Other than that, we got a small Dollie around 65cm and dropped 2 other small ones earlier on.

Everything we hooked apart from one Dollie was on the lure chain on the rigger with pillies inside the stinger lure.

  8. yeah, that fish was way too green :)

I've posted this photo before, it's from a small 50kg Blue after a 40min fight on light gear, it went berserk when we finally got it to the boat, jumping and banging its head against the boat. It left us this souvenir.

  9. couldn't agree more, no current and the fishing is usually slow and unproductive. We were out the other day off Sydney and there was absolutely no current and all we got was the one hit all day

conditions looked great in your photos though, it always worth a shot with conditions like that

current is wide off Sydney ATM, hopefully it will start pushing in closer soon

  10. We got out on Wednesday, double hook up as soon as we hit the shelf, one was a small black and the other was a small blue which took a lot of 24kg line on its first run. We eventually lost the black but landed the little blue. Nothing for the rest of the day but shy dollies, not wanting to feed on our lures, the dollies seemed to be getting harassed by something bigger. Water temps were 22.4 - 23 all day and the good water seemed to push in from the shelf to the shallower areas during the day.

    Cheers,

    Bill.

that's unreal, you just needed a stripe to get the marlin trifecta

  11. Unlucky Pete.

I got out Tuesday. We eventually found nice water near the southern canyons. Managed a striped marlin 80-85kg on 15kg tackle. Was one cranky fish, nearly spooled us on the first run ha.

well done on the marlin mate, Tuesday looked pretty good, I think the wind dropped right off in the arvo

oh well, we gave it a go and we blew it :)

We did see a huge shark out near Browns, maybe 8-9ft, drove straight over the top of it and it barely moved, could have been a great white!

    have a good one

  12. We got out on a nice day and heard of a big striped marlin taken and went in early as me and Dennis decided to throw our lunch overboard but on its maiden voyage his 580 Haines went really well

good day for a maiden voyage, conditions were great, water was as bit greenish closer, but really blue outside the shelf. You'll have to pack an extra lunch next time :)

    have a good one!

  13. We got out there yesterday. We hooked one big dollie near browns but dropped it, that was the only strike for the day for us.

On the radio we heard a 2 big dollies where caught and few marlin hooked.

    happy new year!

  14. Planned to head offshore on the 23rd with a couple of Raiders but the forecast was for 20 knots plus SE all day so I thought better of it and cancelled the trip, it would have been pretty rough all day. The 24th looked better but we could only do a half day. Checked the conditions at 6am and it seemed ok, so I decided to give it a go, just my son Ben and myself on-board.

We arrived at the heads, it was lot lumpier than I expected and we couldn’t get any speed up anyway so we put the lures straight out and started trolling directly east towards the shelf. We saw quite a few boats on the way out, all in close. Water was great from about a 1 mile out, 21 to 21.5 and electric blue. We got a 75cm Dolphin Fish about 5 miles out and another slightly smaller one shortly after. Both were caught on a blue lure chain with pilchards inside the stinger lure.

We kept trolling towards the shelf but the water got colder and greener the further east we went. It seemed more promising in close where we got the Dollies earlier so we headed back there and caught a bigger Dollie near the same area around midday. We got it on a 12” yellow lure. The Dollie we caught earlier had a couple of 8” dolphin fish in its guts, cannibals. So we cut up the small Dollies and put it inside the yellow lure to match what they were feeding on, that did the trick.

We called It a day after that and started trolling back towards the harbour. We were only 5 miles out so we were back inside the heads by 1pm. Great day!

  15. Reporting in...zeros. Trolled from 60fathom inside bait station out to 77fathoms. Temp went from 21.5 to 22.6 then the wind blew around 17knots plus. Opted to stay in close as boats out wide hadn't seen anything. Trolled north along 67 fathoms on a small current line, though didn't turn a real or see any activity. Water looked good 75-80 and that would have been the pick. Happy fishing

bummer you didn't get anything, looking at the charts I think better conditions are coming. Alt, temp and currents all looks pretty good just east of Heatons

It should be around Browns in the next few days if it keeps moving in the same direction

  16. hey that's fishing for you, at least you got a hit and some small kings, its still a bit early for the swarms of dollies, but it's always worth trying and there are some bigger dollies out there, just gotta get out there and hopefully you will come across one

I spoke a few people who went out off Sydney on the weekend and they didn't turn a reel, so you did better than they did :)

looks like better conditions are on the way
