  1. I have been to a fishing spot a couple of times in the last month, land based and around the Hunters Hill area.

We've always timed it so we get there about 4pm and fish until around 9pm, on both occasions the high tide was around the 8-9pm time, either just on or just after darkness.

We have caught lots of undersize bream and flatties but a couple of legal pan sized in amongst them. The funny part is that as soon as darkness comes, the fish just stop biting. It goes from lots of rubbish and pest fish biiting, straight to nothing at all, not a touch in an hour or more.

On the last occasion another guy was there and we were talking, he lives locally and goes fishing often and he said he has never caught anything there at night, only the daytime. I find it hard to believe that you cannot catch fish there at night. It just doesnt make sense. If you said you ONLY catch at night then i would believe that because of water traffic, depth of water and other things, but i have never been to a place where you dont catch or even get bites, at night.

    Any comments or advice?

You get fish at night sometimes but the vast majority of bites are early morning, late afternoon and at the change of tide. Also overcast rainy days, they seem bite more which makes sense, because overcast days emulate early morning and late afternoon lighting conditions. But I like fishing late arvos and night, its just a nice time to fish. If you are fishing at night, I'd try a live yakka or small tailor on heavier gear because the distressed live bait will attract the bigger stuff and you don't have to worry about the little fish picking it off.

As for the noise, if the bream aren't biting I sometimes turn on the engines on and a lot of time it seems to bring them on the bite. I don't think they that are scared or spooked by the noise, there would be that much noise in the harbour anyway, if anything it probably attracts them.

  2. I went out with my mate on Monday

    Conditions were very good

We started the troll out of the heads heading south in close 1km off rocks

Hooked a big bonito on a halco laser pro

We kept trolling south till Bondi then headed out to 70 meters for a bottom bash

Picked up a few flatties and a mowie

Water was clear and 22 degrees about 5kms out

Some small dollies just appeared near our boat so we had a bit of fun with surface poppers for a bit

We then trolled a few tiny skirts and a bibless to 12 mile with no luck

Water temp stayed around 22 but water was clear

About a dozen boats on the 12 mile jigging and live baiting for kings

Looked like there were plenty about but we didn't have the jigs/ live bait. We managed some bottom bashing and about 6 leather jackets

We then did some stop and go bottom fishing on the way in and managed a few more flatties

And some more dollies schooling up near the boat again

Such a nice day but just a small feed at the end

Hope you get out there soon

cool, that's a good catch, i'll definitely head out next week if the boat gets fixed, I'll be happy just to get on the water, even if there is nothing out there :)

  3. At the moment it's just work work work! Will keep that up the whole of next month but after that bring on some tuna!

    What happened to the boat?

Yeah I know the feeling. Just wear and tear on the boat, the stainless tubes that hold the radar dish are both broken, its ripping through the canvas and the wiring. Needs to get fixed otherwise it will all come crashing down next wave I hit. I might just remove the radar, I never use it anyway.

Might fish next week if I can get the boat fixed, I'll let you know. There's probably heaps of dollies around those fads this time of year, I'd be happy just to catch a few dollies.

  4. C'mon guys

The state is broke and we need to pay for the 35 Public Servants that it takes to run the Premiers Office.

I do agree that we shouldn't have to pay any toll when we spend the bulk of our trip on the freeway travelling 60km's below the speed limit because some decided we need to cut the grass on the median strip

I am pretty sure the state doesn't own that road, I believe its private, so you're probably not helping the state anyway, you're helping some rich guys get richer. I wish the state owned that road which would mean all NSW residents would have a share of it and then the state could probably regulate the tolls to make them fair and reasonable.

you have our give our government credit, they are exceptionally good at selling our assets or creating assets at the taxpayers expense that doesn't benefit us. I am predicting they will sell the Harbour Bridge next to someone overseas :)

  5. Gee Jim you're doing it tough mate. Need someone to carry your bags? I know that there's deep sea AND river /mangrove fishing available. We weren't able to go river fishing because the tide was too low. They have very big tides there compared to the east coast. As mentioned in the previous post the pier is very popular. Good luck mate.

And don't forget all the Crocs in the rivers up there :) I wouldn't fish off the bank

  6. There is a big pier up there, the locals all use heavy handlines on it. You can buy the handlines from the local supermarket up there. They get jewies, GT, barra, sharks, mangrove jack off the peir. I fished it a few nights and got one big mangrove jack off it. But the locals were telling me when the jewies run they pull them in one and after and another, so you still have to be lucky and get the right day.

Its really high off the water and don't fall in, there are warning signs that display

    WARNING
    Sharks
    Crocodiles
    Sea Snakes
    Dangerous Currents
    Box Jelly Fish

  7. nice one :) what water temp did you get him in?

I heard that Sydney was pretty quite over the weekend, one stripe on Saturday morning and one massive Blue in 1500fa, but most boats getting zero marlin bites.

  8. Thanks for the update on conditions out there. (Im assuming the report is for 8-4-16 this year?)

Havent been out since Good friday....

Looks like water is cooling down a bit

    Cheers mate

    doh! thanks for that

yeah, highest was 23.2 that we came across. 25+ is out really wide but it looks like it might circle back in close in a week or two. Lots of school Dollies about and 23 is a good temp for stripes.

  9. no probs Steve, maybe next time we get some big fish

fishythings, the most bait we sounded by was around the 10 to 12 mile area near the traps. there was scattered bait here and there all the way out but not any big blobs of them. but water was good all the way out, we didn't see any flying fish either. Good luck tomorrow.

  10. We went offshore yesterday with a few Fishraiders. Good conditions this time, mostly smooth for the majority of the day.

Water temp went to 23.2 from about 10 miles out and stayed at that temp to 10 miles past shelf where it dropped to low 22s. Plenty of small Dollies around those traps 10 miles out, boated 5 or 6 small ones and missed about as many. We got a 3-way hook-up on one of the passes and we dropped one Dollie that was a bit bigger.

Headed east from traps looking for bigger fish but didn’t get any other hook-ups. There were quite a few birds east of the shelf at times which looked promising but that was about all we came across.

Good luck to anyone heading out.

    Peter

  11. Yeah Sunday looks best, if the weather is good this Friday we'll be heading out. Weekend before last there was that hot Blue bite but the weekend just gone was really quiet from what I have heard, one boat said they hooked a spearfish but that's about it. Hopefullyit will be good this weekend.

  12. I have thought about giving Swordies a crack off Sydney before.

Long liners bring them in off Sydney all the time, so no reason why a rec couldn't get one. I guess I would emulate a long line method which would be 3 -4 rods dropped with squid or slimies between 30 and 100m, late arvo and night or if you were fishing during the day then I would set it much deeper.

I'm sure they would be around Browns at times but I agree with Stevefish if they were around Browns in any real numbers you would have to think someone would have caught one as a by-catch by now considering how many boats fish Browns.

Most long liners set their lines pretty wide off Sydney most of time, at least east of Heatons and up to 100 miles out. So I would probably try Heatons if I was going to give it shot and fish it from late afternoon, all night and into the morning. I think you would also have to put some serious time into it as well. Most long liners off Sydney set thousands of hooks of over miles and miles on trips that can last up to a week and only bring back a few.

The race is on to catch a Swordy off Sydney :)

  13. Looks a bit lumpy behind that dollie Pete :1sweatdrop: nice captures anyway and saved heaps of fuel :biggrinthumb:

Bad luck Pete. Here's hoping for an improvement in the conditions.

Well done pete. Not a bad plan B there. The weather is always the one thing we can't control.

You were both still smiling, so happy days!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

A mate turned back on Tuesday aswell just too rugged out there. Great recovery on the session tho some nice fish there congrats[emoji106]. Hopefully we see a few yft caught over the wknd with reports of pros getting into a few this week.

looked like a dog of a day but you still made it happen. Good report and Great work!

yeah it was a rough old day and we got some good fish, can never be unhappy about that;. A sheltered bay, a wharf, offshore, its all good!

This weekend looks really good conditions wise, be interested to see what reports come in. Next Friday is looking good for now Steve.

  14. No prize fish like Aerial or Sunray, seriously they were both awesome catches. but we got variety :)

I got email from customer on Monday night who got a Blue along the shelf and a couple of text messages from guys that hooked Blues in the same area, so I thought screw it I’ll give it a go based on their reports. I had buddy and his nephew available on short notice and the BOM forecast was for less than metre after midday, so it all looked promising.

We got to the heads around 12, it was horrible, really rough and messy, 2 swells about 1.5 to 2 metres from different directions and strong winds were forming these mutated double waves. We headed out anyway hoping the wind would drop and smooth out like BOM predicted.

We could barely set the spread and about every 5 minutes the boat did a bone-crunching drop which knocked us about. We got a hook-up on something that seemed fairly decent about 3 miles out but dropped it while turning the boat downwind to fight it. We got couple of Dollie hook-ups about 5 miles out. One mile further east we took a wave over the side of the boat and then another shortly after. I called it after that, it was too risky for my liking and the wind still wasn’t dropping, so I turned around and started heading in. It wasn’t even a soft ride back. We got a small stripy on the way back in.

I was actually surprised by how many boats we could hear on the radio chasing blues. They must have been much bigger boats than ours or crazier than us. Its Blue fever and people will go out in just about anything to get one, just like did, we're all mad fishermen right!

We were back inside the heads by 2, still early so we decided to anchor up at Forty Baskets between the boat moorings for a few hours to collect some bait and clean up the boat. We put out a live yakka and got a Jewie not long after and then we got a couple of Kings on little cubes of pillies. We could almost hand feed the Kings, they came that close, we just kept throwing out burley and that kept them around.

Anyway, we gave it a shot.

  15. Hi all hope everyone has had a great and safe Easter?

I had time to get out today, so I checked the weather and saw about 1m swell and 6-9kns end etc.

How ever when in the water the wind seemed higher my guess would be about 15kns? With about 2m swell.

Was any one else out in the botany area today?

What was the weather like for you?

Any other apps to check for weather?

    Cheers

    Mojo.

seabreeze is generally around 25% off the money, its normally 25% stronger that it forecasts

if says 15knts its 20knts, etc, www.bom.gov.au is way more accurate for wind forecasts, but they will also get it wrong from time to time, but overall much more accurate than seabreeeze

seabreeze is pretty good for wave frequency if you're going offshore
